That removes a manual compatibility-tool step for this kind of entry on SteamOS and desktop Linux—but it does not guarantee that every game or app will run.
What changed in the October 7 Steam Beta?
The Steam Client Beta notes say: “Windows binaries registered as non-steam games will now run in Proton by default.” The wording is reproduced in GamingOnLinux’s October 8 report, which links to Valve’s October 7 Steam news item.
In practical terms, if you add a Windows executable to Steam as a non-Steam entry, the Beta chooses Proton without requiring you to first pick a compatibility tool manually. The change is about the default tool selection, not a new version of Proton or a broader promise of compatibility.
The same Beta notes also list separate fixes for non-Steam games that fail to launch after changing the Target binary with Browse, and for the Stop button failing to close a game launched by an external tool. Those fixes address different launch issues; they are not part of the Proton-default behavior.

How to run a Windows executable through Steam
The Beta change applies to Windows binaries registered in Steam as non-Steam games. Once such an entry is launched under the updated client, Proton is the default compatibility tool. The precise menu labels and steps for adding a non-Steam entry can vary by client version, so the key distinction is the entry’s executable type and registration—not whether you use a Steam Deck or a desktop PC.
For a Windows-only game or app, adding its executable as a non-Steam entry can put it in your Steam library and let you launch it through the client. On SteamOS, that can be useful in Gaming Mode; desktop Linux users can also use the Steam client behavior without Steam Deck hardware. This is a software update, not a hardware requirement.

What Proton does—and what it does not do
ValveSoftware describes Proton as “a tool for use with the Steam client which allows games which are exclusive to Windows to run on the Linux operating system.” Proton is based on Wine and integrates with Steam; Valve recommends that most users use the Proton version shipped by Steam. See ValveSoftware’s Proton repository.
Proton provides a compatibility path for Windows software; it does not turn a Windows program into a native Linux build. The automatic default only saves you the initial choice of compatibility tool. An app can still fail to start, behave incorrectly, or lack support from its publisher.

- Simplistic Design: Enjoy the latest generation of Windows 11 Home for your everyday needs. *MSI recommends Windows 11 Pro for business use.
- Cool While Gaming: In conjunction with an ARGB fan Air Cooler, the Codex R2 features four system cooling fans; three in the front and one in the rear to pull in cool air and push heat out of the PC.
- Turn on the Bright Lights: With the built-in RGB lighting, take your gaming experience to the next level by pressing the MSI LED button to cycle through lighting options. Customize lighting even further with MSI Center software.
Compatibility can depend on the individual program and its requirements. Valve’s 2018 Steam Play announcement noted that games with complex DRM or anti-cheat systems could be difficult or impossible to support. That is a general caveat, not a claim that every game using those systems fails. Steam likewise says its supported-games list is continually updated and that Steam Play may allow Windows-only games to work on Linux; “may” is not a guarantee for every title or app.
Which launch path applies?
| What you launch | Relevant path | What the Beta changes |
|---|---|---|
| Windows executable registered as a non-Steam game | Proton compatibility layer through Steam | Proton is selected by default for this entry. |
| Native Linux build | The native Linux build, using its normal Steam runtime/default path | The Windows-binary Proton default is not the point of this path. |
| Entry that needs a different compatibility tool | Manually select a compatibility tool in Steam | The automatic default does not prevent choosing another tool when needed. |
Steam has made other changes to reduce tool-selection friction. An earlier Beta made the compatibility-tool selector always visible and put the recommended option at the top as “Default.” That was a separate interface change, not the October 7 behavior for registered Windows binaries. The Steam Client Beta feed currently labels October 5 as its latest update; the October 7 feature is reported through a separate Steam news item.

Who benefits from this update?
It is most useful if you already use Steam as a launcher for Windows games or apps on Linux and previously had to choose a compatibility tool for a non-Steam entry. SteamOS users can benefit in Gaming Mode, while desktop Linux users can benefit from the same client behavior. A Steam Deck is one option for using SteamOS, but buying one is not necessary to use this feature.
