What happened when Silksong launched?
Hollow Knight: Silksong launched on September 4, 2025, at approximately 14:00 UTC—10 a.m. EDT, 7 a.m. PDT, 4 p.m. CEST and 11 p.m. JST. Steam’s release listing is available on the official Steam page, while SteamDB records the release timestamp.
Almost immediately, players trying to buy the game reported that Steam’s storefront could not keep up with demand. The most commonly reported message was E502 L3, an error generally associated in contemporary reporting with an overloaded or unstable Steam storefront. Users also reported carts that would not load, checkout failures and product-key activation problems.

Some reports suggested that purchases of games other than Silksong were affected as well. One Steam Community discussion also included an individual report of duplicate copies appearing in a cart after repeated attempts. That should be treated as a user report, not as confirmed platform-wide behavior.
Contemporary coverage from PC Gamer and Notebookcheck described the launch-time purchasing problems. The available evidence does not include a Valve postmortem identifying the precise infrastructure component that failed, so it is more accurate to describe the event as a severe storefront and transaction disruption than to state as fact that the game literally “crashed Steam.”
Was Steam completely down?
No—not uniformly. The clearest failure was the purchase flow. Steam services do not all fail together, and a buyer can be unable to load a cart while other users continue downloading games, using community features or playing already-installed titles.

Why did the launch create such a large surge?
Silksong arrived after roughly six years of intense anticipation following the original Hollow Knight. It was one of Steam’s most highly anticipated and wishlisted releases, and the US Steam listing showed a relatively low $19.99 base-game price.
The release also concentrated activity around one unlock time. Unlike a conventional preorder or preload event on most platforms, many players attempted to purchase and start downloading the game at launch. That does not prove the lack of a preorder or preload caused the incident, but it is a reasonable contributing factor: a large audience reached the storefront at once rather than spreading purchases across an earlier window.
The game was also released across multiple platforms at the same time, and Xbox announced day-one availability through Game Pass for Cloud, Console and PC. The combination of anticipation, simultaneous availability and a low purchase barrier created an unusually intense launch moment.

How long did the checkout disruption last?
There is no single, authoritative outage duration in the available reporting. Problems began at or immediately after launch, and checkout remained unreliable through at least part of the following hour. PC Gamer later reported that the store had recovered and that members of its team had completed purchases.
The safest description is that the worst of the disruption affected the initial launch period and recovery happened in stages, rather than at one clearly documented moment. It should not be presented as a current Steam outage.
What to do if a Steam purchase fails
The most important precaution is to avoid submitting the same payment repeatedly before checking whether the first attempt worked.

- Check your email and payment account. A bank authorization may be pending without meaning that the purchase was completed. Do not treat a pending charge alone as proof of ownership.
- Wait before retrying. If Steam is visibly returning server errors, repeated clicks can create confusion about which attempt, if any, was submitted.
- Try the client or browser only once the service is stable. Switching between them or restarting Steam can help with a local session problem, but it will not repair a server-side checkout outage.
- Contact Steam Support if you were charged but the game is missing. Include the transaction details and avoid buying the game again until the payment status is clear.
These are sensible consumer-safety steps, not a Valve-published procedure specific to the Silksong incident.

Steam
Steam is the natural choice for existing Steam users and Steam Deck or SteamOS players. The listing advertises Steam ecosystem features such as achievements, Steam Cloud, Family Sharing and Remote Play. Its trade-off is that a storefront outage can prevent an otherwise ready-to-play customer from completing the purchase.

Silksong was announced for day-one Game Pass availability across Cloud, Console and PC, subject to the relevant plan, region and account requirements. Nintendo announced Silksong as available for its consoles, with a Switch 2 edition or update path described in its announcement. This is the best fit for players who already own the relevant Nintendo hardware, but buyers should verify the current Switch 2 upgrade terms rather than assume that every feature is included automatically with every purchase.
