Yes—Lunar Client is free to download and use, but it does not include Minecraft. To play the full game through Lunar Client, you generally need a Microsoft account that owns Minecraft: Java Edition. Minecraft, optional Lunar cosmetics, and subscription features are separate from the free client software.
What Lunar Client gives you for free
Lunar Client is a third-party Minecraft client and launcher. Its free software includes built-in settings and dozens of client-side modifications for features such as performance tuning, PvP interfaces, HUDs, replay tools, and other utilities. Lunar’s official pages advertise different modification counts, so the exact number can change over time.

It is not the official Minecraft Launcher, and downloading it does not download or unlock Minecraft itself.
Do you have to buy Minecraft to use Lunar Client?
Yes, for normal full-game access. Lunar’s login guidance tells users to purchase Minecraft: Java Edition from Minecraft.net and sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the game. Creating a Microsoft account is free, but creating one does not give that account a Minecraft license.

The PC edition is currently sold by Microsoft as Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC. Lunar’s authentication instructions specifically concern Java Edition, so do not assume that owning or installing Lunar provides Bedrock, console, mobile, or cross-platform access.
The actual cost breakdown
| Item | Cost or requirement |

How to start playing through Lunar Client
- If necessary, buy or verify Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC using the intended Microsoft account.
- Download Lunar Client from its official website.
- Install and open the Lunar Client Launcher.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that owns Minecraft: Java Edition. Some login situations may require an adult account or an eligible Microsoft family-plan arrangement.
- Select a Minecraft version supported by the current launcher.
- Launch the game and configure Lunar’s client features through its in-game interface.
Lunar supports a range of Java versions, but the exact list can change. Check the version selector in the current launcher rather than assuming that every historical or future Minecraft release is supported.

Can Lunar Client join normal Minecraft servers?
Lunar says it can work with servers that support vanilla Minecraft when you use a supported game version. That does not guarantee compatibility with every server.
- Match Lunar’s selected version to the server’s version.
- Check whether the server requires Forge, Fabric, or a specific modpack.
- Read the server rules before using minimaps, replay tools, cosmetic features, or other client modifications.
- Be aware that a server’s anti-cheat system may restrict particular modifications.
A server that accepts vanilla Minecraft may work with Lunar, but custom modded servers and tightly controlled configurations can require a different setup.
What about Minecraft’s free trial?
Minecraft has an official Java Edition free trial, but it is not the same as owning Minecraft or getting unrestricted access through Lunar. Microsoft says the trial averages about five in-game days, or roughly 100 minutes. Public multiplayer servers are unavailable during the trial, although limited LAN play is allowed.
In practical terms:
- Free Lunar Client: free client software.
- Minecraft free trial: a time-limited official demo.
- Full Minecraft through Lunar: requires a valid game license.
Is Lunar Client a replacement for the official launcher?
Lunar can be a free alternative launcher and client experience, but it is not a free replacement for the Minecraft license. The official Minecraft Launcher is also free to download, yet the launcher itself does not mean the games it provides access to are free.

Lunar is a good fit if you already own Java Edition and want preconfigured client modifications or a simpler setup than assembling individual mods. It may be a poor fit if you primarily play Bedrock, console, or mobile editions, need an exact Forge or Fabric modpack, or prefer to use only official Microsoft software.
Does Lunar Client improve FPS?
Lunar promotes performance improvements and FPS gains, but no result is guaranteed. Actual performance depends on your hardware, Minecraft version, graphics settings, shaders, server conditions, and other installed software. Treat performance claims as promotional rather than as a promise that Lunar will always double your frame rate.

Common problems
Lunar says the account does not own Minecraft
- Confirm that you signed in with the Microsoft account that purchased or claimed Minecraft.
- Open the official Minecraft Launcher and check whether the game appears there.
- Sign out of Lunar and sign back in with that same account.
- Check whether the account is a child account or subject to Microsoft family restrictions.
- Verify that the account owns Java Edition rather than merely having downloaded a launcher.
- If the message continues, use Lunar’s official support-ticket system referenced in its FAQ.
A server will not connect
Check the selected Minecraft version, the server’s rules, any required Forge or Fabric setup, and whether the server requires a custom modpack. Also confirm that the account can connect through the normal Minecraft Launcher. Lunar compatibility with vanilla-supporting servers is not a guarantee for every modded or restricted server.
Adding a resource pack
Launch the desired version, open Minecraft’s Settings, choose Resource Packs, and use the button to open the resource-pack folder. Put the resource-pack ZIP file or folder there, then select it in-game.

Is Lunar Client safe to download?
Download it only from the official Lunar Client website, and use the official Microsoft sign-in flow. Avoid cracked versions, altered launchers, and unofficial repackaged installers. A free Lunar download is not evidence that Minecraft can be obtained without paying. The official sources establish Lunar’s own download, login, and store channels, but they are not an independent security audit or a guarantee about every third-party download.
