Steam Deck’s labels describe the resulting player experience: Verified should work well immediately, Playable may require a stated adjustment, Unsupported is currently nonfunctional under Valve’s category definition, and Unknown means Valve has not checked it. Proton is part of the assessment, not a replacement for it.
Steam Deck compatibility labels at a glance
The badge on a Steam store page is a summary of Valve’s review, not a simple statement about whether a game launches. Valve checks controls, screen presentation, launcher behavior and support for the game’s Proton-dependent components. Use the label as a starting point, then read the compatibility details for the specific title.

| Label | Valve’s meaning | What you should expect | What it does not mean |
|---|---|---|---|
| Verified | The game works great on Steam Deck out of the box. | Controller input, display, launcher flow and required Proton support meet Valve’s criteria without a workaround. | It is not a guarantee that every future update, setting or online service will behave identically forever. |
| Playable | The game runs, but some manual adjustment may be needed. | You may need a community controller layout or the touchscreen for part of a launcher flow. | It is not synonymous with broken, unplayable or poor performance. |
| Unsupported | The title currently does not function in Valve’s category definition. | Valve’s present review found a blocking compatibility problem. | It does not prove that the game can never work after a game, Proton or SteamOS change. |
| Unknown | Valve has not checked the title. | There is no official Deck review to rely on. | It is not an official failure result and should not be treated as Unsupported. |
Valve’s official criteria and examples are listed on the Steam Deck Verified page. A label is therefore best understood as a description of friction and support, not as a universal technical guarantee.

SteamOS is Linux-based. Valve’s FAQ explains that the vast majority of the Steam library runs on SteamOS “thanks to the Proton compatibility layer Valve ships.” Proton allows games made for Windows to run without the developer first producing a separate Linux port. That is the fundamental reason a large Windows-focused catalog can be offered on a Linux-based handheld.

Proton answers the question how can this Windows game run on SteamOS? It does not, by itself, answer will the game be comfortable to use on the Deck? A title can start through Proton yet still need a controller workaround, show unreadable text at the default resolution, require a launcher that cannot be operated from the controls, or depend on middleware that Proton does not support. Those user-facing details are why Valve has a separate rating system.
Proton and middleware are part of the review
For a title that runs through Proton, Valve’s system-support criterion covers both the game and its middleware, including anti-cheat support. A game can therefore miss Verified even when its main executable appears to launch if a required service is not supported. Conversely, the presence of Proton on a Steam Deck does not automatically make every Windows release compatible; Valve says the vast majority of the library runs, not all of it.
Why Proton and a label can change independently
Proton fixes, game patches and developer changes can alter the experience. A game may move between categories as those changes arrive, while Proton remains the underlying mechanism. Always read the current store or library status for the title you intend to play rather than assuming that a rating seen in an old list still applies.

Verified is a whole-device experience assessment. Valve groups its review into four criteria. Each one can affect the badge even when the game technically launches.
1. Input
The game must provide full controller support, show appropriate controller input icons and bring up the on-screen keyboard automatically when text entry requires it. This criterion is about using the Deck as a handheld, not merely connecting a gamepad after launch. If essential actions demand a mouse or an external keyboard, the title may not meet the out-of-the-box standard.

- Store more of your favorite games and other content with capacities up to 2TB
- Built to endure with temperature resistance, waterproofing, x-ray protection, and more
2. Display
Valve checks support for the Deck’s default resolution, listed in the criteria as 1280×800 or 1280×720, along with sensible default settings and legible text. A game can render successfully and still fall short if menus or gameplay text are difficult to read without manual changes. The display test is therefore about practical readability at the device’s normal presentation, not only whether a frame appears.
3. Seamlessness
A Verified game should present no compatibility warnings and any launcher should be navigable with a controller. Launchers matter because they are part of the path to the game: a title that opens a separate account or configuration screen can still feel frictionless if that screen works from the Deck’s controls. If you must reach for the touchscreen or work around a controller-inaccessible launcher, check the details even if the game itself launches.
4. System support
When Proton is used, Valve checks support for the game and its middleware, including anti-cheat. This is the category most closely associated with the compatibility layer, but it is only one of the four requirements. A title needs the wider experience—not just a successful Proton launch—to receive Verified.
| Review area | Questions to ask in the title’s details | Why it can change your decision |
|---|---|---|
| Input | Are all necessary actions available from the built-in controls? Are the displayed button icons correct? Does the on-screen keyboard appear when needed? | A technically running game can still be awkward for handheld play. |
| Display | Does it support 1280×800 or 1280×720 as applicable? Are the defaults usable and text legible? | Manual graphics or scaling work may be required before the interface is comfortable. |
| Seamlessness | Are there warnings? Can every launcher screen be navigated with a controller? | A launcher can become the practical blocker before gameplay starts. |
| System support | Are Proton, required middleware and anti-cheat supported? | Online or service-dependent features may determine whether the game functions at all. |
Valve describes Verified as: “The game works great on Steam Deck, right out of the box.”
What does Playable mean on Steam Deck?
Playable means the game can work on Deck but does not satisfy every out-of-the-box expectation. Valve’s examples include selecting a community controller configuration or using the touchscreen to navigate a launcher. Those are specific pieces of friction, not a declaration that the entire game is unusable.

How to evaluate a Playable listing
- Find the exact adjustment. Read the compatibility note instead of treating the yellow badge as a generic warning.
- Decide whether it is a one-time step. Choosing a layout once is different from needing touch input throughout every session.
- Identify the affected feature. A launcher-only inconvenience may be acceptable; a missing control during gameplay may not be.
- Consider your play style. A player comfortable with occasional touchscreen use can have a good experience where another player wants uninterrupted controller navigation.
Do not upgrade Playable to Verified simply because a community workaround exists, and do not downgrade it to Unsupported solely because it is not seamless. The badge records Valve’s expected level of adjustment; the attached note tells you whether that adjustment fits your tolerance.

Why is a game Unsupported on Steam Deck?
Unsupported is Valve’s current category result when the title does not function under its compatibility definition. The cause can be a failure in the game itself, a required launcher, middleware or anti-cheat service, or another system-support problem. The badge does not identify a permanent technical impossibility. Proton improvements, a game update or developer work can change the result, so treat Unsupported as the current official status rather than a prediction about every future version.
What does Unknown mean?
Unknown means Valve has not reviewed the game. It is an absence of an official assessment, not evidence that the title fails. You can record it as “not yet checked by Valve,” but you should not present an Unknown badge as a community test, a recommendation to buy or a rejection of the game. If the decision matters, look for the title’s live details and recheck after relevant updates.
How to check whether a game is Verified, Playable, Unsupported or Unknown
Use the current Steam interface for the specific game. Compatibility is title-specific and can change, so an old article, video or screenshot is not a substitute for the live listing.
- Open the game’s Steam store listing or locate the title in your Steam Deck library.
- Read the current Deck compatibility label. Note whether it is Verified, Playable, Unsupported or Unknown.
- Open the attached compatibility details. Look for the reason behind the label, especially controller requirements, display notes, launcher navigation and Proton or middleware information.
- If it is Playable, write down the stated adjustment. Examples include selecting a community controller configuration or using the touchscreen for a launcher.
- If it is Unknown, keep the uncertainty explicit. Do not convert an unreviewed status into either a positive or negative official claim.
- If it is Unsupported, identify the current blocker. Treat the category as Valve’s present result and check again after meaningful game, Proton or SteamOS updates.
- Recheck before purchasing or reinstalling after major updates. Valve describes compatibility reviews as ongoing, and the status can move as fixes arrive.
What to capture when comparing two games
Record the badge together with the detail that matters to you. “Both are Playable” is incomplete if one needs a controller layout only at first launch while the other requires touch navigation whenever its launcher opens. A useful comparison records the input, display, seamlessness and system-support notes separately.

Why Steam Deck compatibility ratings change
Valve says reviews are ongoing and that software, games and ratings can change. In its March 4, 2022 Deck Verified update, Valve described a compatibility number as “just a snapshot of a single moment” and noted that Proton fixes and developer work can move titles between labels. That statement is historical context, not a current catalog count or a promise that every title will improve.
For the same reason, avoid publishing a static list as if it were permanent. A title’s rating can change after a game patch, a Proton change, an update to a launcher or an anti-cheat integration. The reliable workflow is to inspect the current store or library detail when you make your decision.
The 2022 milestone and what it does not tell you
Valve reported in 2022 that the catalog had passed over a thousand games rated Verified or Playable. That was a dated milestone. It should not be read as the present number of compatible games, and it does not tell you the current status of any individual title.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do LCD and OLED Steam Deck models have different ratings?
Valve says tested titles keep the same compatibility rating on LCD and OLED Steam Deck models. This is parity for the rating, not a claim that every game’s performance, battery behavior or personal experience will be identical on both hardware revisions. Use the badge to understand Valve’s compatibility assessment, then consider the details relevant to the model you own.
Common mistakes when interpreting the badges
- Equating Proton with Verified. Proton is the mechanism that enables many Windows games to run; Verified also evaluates controls, display, launcher use and system support.
- Calling Playable broken. Playable signals a stated adjustment, which may be minor or may be unacceptable for your preferred control style.
- Calling Unknown incompatible. Unknown means unreviewed, not failed.
- Calling Unsupported permanent. It is the current official category and may change with future work.
- Using an old status as current. Ratings are snapshots and the live Steam listing is the appropriate reference.
- Ignoring middleware. Anti-cheat and other required components can determine compatibility even when the main game launches.
- Assuming storage changes compatibility. Extra capacity helps you install more games; it does not alter a title’s category.
Does a microSD card improve compatibility?
Steam Deck includes a high-speed microSD slot supporting SD, SDHC and SDXC cards, so optional removable storage can expand the space available for games. It does not change whether a game is Verified, Playable, Unsupported or Unknown. Treat storage expansion as a capacity choice, not a compatibility fix; the title’s Steam rating and details remain the authority for how it runs.

A practical decision framework
Choose Verified when you want the least setup
Verified is the clearest choice for a player who expects to install a game and use the built-in controls immediately. It indicates that Valve’s input, display, seamlessness and system-support checks were satisfied at the time of review.
Choose Playable when the workaround is acceptable
Playable can be a sensible choice when the note describes a small adjustment you are willing to make. Make the decision from the actual requirement, not the color of the badge alone.
Investigate Unknown before relying on the game
Unknown offers no Valve assessment. If the game is important to a trip, a purchase or an online session, wait for clearer information or treat the absence of review as a risk you are consciously accepting.
Treat Unsupported as a stop sign for the present version
Unsupported means Valve’s current category says the title does not function. You can check again after substantial updates, but do not plan around an unverified hope that a future fix will arrive.
The bottom line
Read Steam Deck compatibility as a layered answer. Proton explains how SteamOS can run many Windows games. Verified, Playable, Unsupported and Unknown describe Valve’s current confidence in the complete handheld experience. The most reliable purchase or installation decision combines the live label with its specific notes about controls, display, launchers, Proton, middleware and anti-cheat, then allows for the fact that those ratings can change.
