Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The right setup depends on which PlayStation streaming method you mean. PlayStation Plus streaming in the Windows PC app runs supported games from Sony’s catalog and requires a PlayStation Plus Premium membership, an adult PlayStation account, a compatible Windows computer, broadband and a controller. PS Remote Play is different: it sends a game from your own PS5 or PS4 to a Windows PC or Mac, so you need the console and the game available on it.
Sony’s US PC support page lists 5 Mbps as the minimum broadband speed for the PlayStation Plus app and recommends a wired connection. That figure is a service threshold, not a promise of perfect latency or image quality. The same page names the DUALSHOCK 4 as a compatible controller, while Sony says third-party XInput controllers may work without guaranteeing full compatibility.

Choose the streaming route first
“Streaming PlayStation games on PC” can describe two separate services. Selecting the wrong one is the most common setup mistake, because the subscription, library and hardware requirements are not interchangeable.
PlayStation Plus streaming on PC
The free PlayStation Plus PC app connects you to Sony’s cloud catalog. With PlayStation Plus Premium, Sony’s US membership information describes streaming a selection of PS4 games in the Game Catalog and selected titles in the Classics Catalog on a compatible PC. Catalog availability changes, and some PS4 games may not be streamable.

- Built-in microphone and headset jack - Chat with friends online using the built-in microphone or by connecting a headset to the 3.5mm jack. Easily switch voice capture on and off at a moment’s notice with the dedicated mute button. Internet and account for PlayStation Network required.
- DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
This app is not presented as a way to stream PS5 games directly to a PC. Sony describes PS5 cloud streaming for PS5 consoles and PlayStation Portal, while a PC can control a PS5 through Remote Play.
PS Remote Play
Remote Play transmits the output of your own PS5 or PS4 to a Windows PC or Mac over a high-speed network. The game must be available on that console; Sony’s Remote Play announcement distinguishes the feature from cloud streaming by noting that the title must be downloaded to the PS5 first. Remote Play therefore does not replace a console, and it does not give you the PlayStation Plus PC catalog.
| Question | PlayStation Plus PC app | PS Remote Play |

Internet speed: the numbers Sony actually publishes
For the PlayStation Plus PC app
Sony’s US support page states: “Broadband with a minimum speed of 5 Mbps — a wired connection is recommended.” This is the published minimum for the PC app. It does not specify a guaranteed resolution, frame rate or latency at that speed, and a speed test alone cannot reveal Wi-Fi interference, congestion or distance to the service.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For PS5 and PlayStation Portal cloud streaming
Sony publishes a separate set of recommendations for select PS5 games streamed to PS5 consoles or PlayStation Portal with PlayStation Plus Premium. Do not copy these figures as PC-app requirements.
| Target resolution | Recommended connection speed |
|---|---|
| 720p | 13 Mbps |
| 1080p | 23 Mbps |
| 1440p | 38 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) | 52 Mbps |
The PS5/Portal page says 5 Mbps upload and 5 Mbps download are needed to establish a streaming session. Those recommendations apply to the PS5/Portal service, not the Windows PC app. Sony lists availability for that service in Canada, the United States, Japan, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, the Republic of Cyprus, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom; overseas territories are excluded. Check the live regional page because supported countries and terms can change.

- Mappable Back Buttons
- DualSense Wireless Controller Features Built In
- Replaceable Stick Modules and Caps
Make the connection usable, not merely fast enough
- Use Ethernet from the PC to the router when possible; this is Sony’s recommendation for the PC app.
- If Wi-Fi is unavoidable, use the least congested band available, stay near the access point and pause large downloads or video uploads on the same network.
- Test at the time you normally play. A peak-hour connection can behave differently from a midday speed test.
- Keep the PC app and Remote Play application updated, then retest after changing network equipment.
Subscription and account requirements
PlayStation Plus Premium
The official membership information identifies the Premium tier for PlayStation Plus streaming on PC. The service is a catalog benefit, not a way to stream every PlayStation release. Individual games can leave the catalog, and a title shown in the console catalog may not be available for PC streaming.
Plan names, prices, taxes and benefits vary by country and can change. Confirm the current Premium offering in your PlayStation account’s region before paying. An account created in one country should not be assumed to have the same catalog or streaming access as an account in another country.

Adult PlayStation account
Sony’s PC support requirements call for an adult PlayStation account and an active PlayStation Plus membership. Child-account restrictions, family settings or regional limitations can prevent sign-in or access even when the computer meets the hardware requirements.
PC requirements for the PlayStation Plus app
Sony’s US support page currently lists the following specifications. The operating-system wording is notably old, so verify the app download page immediately before installation rather than treating this table as a guarantee for every current Windows build.
| Component | Minimum listed | Recommended listed |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 | Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 |
| Processor | Intel Core i3 at 2.0 GHz | Intel Core i3 at 3.5 GHz or AMD A10 at 3.8 GHz, or faster |
| Storage | 300 MB available | 300 MB or more |
| Memory | 2 GB RAM | 2 GB RAM or more |
| Other hardware | Sound card and USB port | Sound card and USB port |
These are Sony’s published app specifications, not an independent performance test. A computer can satisfy them and still have poor results because of network jitter, Wi-Fi interference, background load or an unsupported controller.

Controllers: what works and what does not
PlayStation Plus PC app
A controller is required. Sony explicitly names the DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controller for the PC app. The support page adds that some third-party PC-compatible controllers using XInput work, but Sony does not guarantee that they are fully compatible. Button prompts, motion controls, touch-pad functions or other features can therefore vary.
Connect the controller by USB if wireless pairing is unreliable. The PC must have a usable USB port, and a cable that carries data is required for wired communication; a charge-only cable may not be detected.
Remote Play
Sony’s Remote Play PC/Mac page lists DualSense, DualSense Edge and DUALSHOCK 4 controllers and specifies a USB cable connection to the computer. This listing applies to Remote Play, not automatically to the PlayStation Plus PC app. A DualSense can be the appropriate choice for Remote Play, but the PC-app support page does not make the same explicit promise.
Audio, voice chat and multiplayer limits
Audio routing
For the PlayStation Plus PC app, game audio is sent through the computer’s speakers or headphones. Sony says a headset plugged into the controller does not work for audio routing in that app. Plug headphones into the PC instead and select the intended output device in Windows before starting the game.
Party Chat
Party Chat is not currently supported in the PlayStation Plus PC app. You can still use another voice service on the computer if your group agrees, but that is separate from Sony’s in-app party system.

- Enjoy precise, comfortable control over 10,000+ supported Steam games.
- Easily pair the controller directly to your Windows PC via Bluetooth or play as you charge with the included USB Type-C cable
- Stay paired with up to four different Bluetooth devices, making it easy to enjoy the controller across Windows PC, Mac, PS5 consoles and smartphones. Discover more connection tips and tricks at playstation.com/pair-dualsense
- Access the latest available controller firmware directly from your PC with the free-todownload PlayStation Accessories app
- Play games streamed from your PS5 or PS4 console to your PC via the PS Remote Play App
Local multiplayer
Compatible streamed games may support local multiplayer, with PC play limited to two players. Support is game-specific; the presence of a multiplayer mode in the console version does not guarantee that every local feature is available in the stream.
DLC and add-ons while streaming
Game add-ons and downloadable content cannot be used while streaming a PlayStation Plus catalog game through the PC app. If a game requires a particular expansion, language pack or add-on, cloud streaming is not the correct way to access it. Remote Play is different because it mirrors the game installation and entitlements on your own console.
How to start with the PC app
- Check regional eligibility. Confirm that PlayStation Plus Premium and PC streaming are offered for your account’s country.
- Confirm the account type. Sign in with an adult PlayStation account that has an active Premium membership.
- Check the computer. Compare Windows, processor, storage, memory, sound and USB requirements with Sony’s current download page. Treat the Windows 8.1/10 listing as a point to verify, not as proof that every newer or older build is supported.
- Prepare the network. Aim for at least the published 5 Mbps broadband minimum and use Ethernet where possible. Stop competing traffic before testing.
- Install and sign in. Download the official PlayStation Plus PC application, install it, launch it and sign in to the eligible account.
- Connect the controller. Start with a DUALSHOCK 4, preferably over a data-capable USB cable if pairing problems occur. For an XInput controller, expect that some functions may not be guaranteed.
- Select an eligible title. Browse the PC app’s available catalog and read the game’s listing. A title’s presence on PS5 or in another regional catalog does not prove that it can stream to PC.
- Set up audio. Connect speakers or headphones to the computer, not to the controller, and verify the Windows output device.
How to start with Remote Play
- Prepare the console. Install the game on your PS5 or PS4 and sign in with the account that owns or can access it.
- Enable Remote Play on the console. Use the console’s Remote Play setting and follow Sony’s on-screen instructions for rest mode and network access if you want to wake the console remotely.
- Install the PC or Mac application. Use Sony’s Remote Play software for the computer’s operating system.
- Connect a supported controller. Sony lists DualSense, DualSense Edge and DUALSHOCK 4; its instructions specify a USB cable connection to the computer.
- Sign in and select the console. The application connects to the PS5 or PS4 and displays the console’s output on the computer.
Remote Play depends on the console’s power state, account sign-in and network path. It cannot work when the console is unavailable, and it does not turn a PC into a cloud-streaming client for Sony’s catalog.

The app says the connection is too slow
- Run a new speed test on the same PC and at the same time of day as the failure.
- Switch from Wi-Fi to Ethernet, or move closer to the router.
- Pause cloud backups, game downloads and video uploads on every device sharing the connection.
- Restart the router and PC, then test again. If the problem persists above 5 Mbps, instability or latency—not headline download speed—may be the limiting factor.
The controller is not detected
- Reconnect the USB cable and try another USB port.
- Confirm that the cable carries data.
- Use a DUALSHOCK 4 for the PC app or one of Sony’s listed Remote Play controllers before testing third-party hardware.
- On a third-party XInput pad, update its firmware and close other remapping utilities; Sony still does not guarantee complete compatibility.
There is no game audio
- Move the headset from the controller to the PC.
- Open Windows sound settings and select the intended output.
- Check the application’s volume in the Windows volume mixer.
A desired game or add-on is missing
Check whether the title is an eligible PC-streaming game, whether it has left the catalog and whether your account region matches the catalog you viewed. DLC and add-ons cannot be used with a PlayStation Plus game streamed through the PC app; use a local installation or Remote Play from a console for content that requires your own add-ons.

What to verify before subscribing
- Your country offers the Premium tier and PC streaming.
- The current app download page supports your Windows version.
- You have an adult PlayStation account and a controller the app recognizes.
- Your broadband connection meets the 5 Mbps PC-app minimum, with wired networking available if possible.
- The games you want are in the eligible PC catalog, rather than only in a PS5 or console-only listing.
- You do not depend on Party Chat or controller-connected headset audio, which the PC app does not currently provide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a PS5 DualSense controller with the PlayStation Plus PC app?
Sony’s PC-app support page explicitly names DUALSHOCK 4. DualSense, DualSense Edge and DUALSHOCK 4 are listed for Remote Play, but Sony does not make the same explicit PC-app compatibility statement for DualSense. For the app, use a DUALSHOCK 4 or understand that another controller may not be fully supported.

Do I need to own a PS5 or PS4 for PlayStation Plus streaming on PC?
No console is required for a PlayStation Plus cloud session. You do need an adult PlayStation account, Premium membership, a supported Windows PC, broadband and a compatible controller. A console is required for Remote Play.
Why can’t I use Party Chat or a headset plugged into my controller?
Sony says Party Chat is not supported in the PlayStation Plus PC app, and audio is routed through the computer rather than a headset connected to the controller. Connect headphones to the PC and use a separate voice service if needed.
Are Sony’s 13 Mbps, 23 Mbps, 38 Mbps and 52 Mbps figures the PC requirements?
No. Those recommendations correspond to 720p, 1080p, 1440p and 4K cloud streaming on PS5 consoles or PlayStation Portal. The US PC-app support page publishes a separate 5 Mbps minimum.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe Bottom Line
Use PlayStation Plus Premium and the PC app for eligible catalog streaming without owning a console; use Remote Play when you want to play games installed on your own PS5 or PS4. For the PC app, plan around Sony’s 5 Mbps minimum, a wired connection, an adult account and a DUALSHOCK 4, then verify regional availability and current Windows support before subscribing.
