The cheapest new Steam Deck in Valve’s current US lineup is now the 512GB OLED, listed at $789 as of August 18, 2026. That does not mean every LCD unit has vanished: refurbished, clearance, and used consoles may still be available.
What Valve discontinued
The original Steam Deck launched with 64GB, 256GB, and 512GB LCD configurations. After Valve introduced the OLED revision, the 64GB and 512GB LCD models were phased out, leaving the 256GB LCD as the budget option.

Valve has now stopped producing that 256GB LCD model as well, with remaining stock sold until exhausted. The precise takeaway is therefore not that every LCD Steam Deck is impossible to buy, but that Valve no longer makes a new LCD version for its regular lineup.
The reported discontinuation notice concerned production and sell-through, not an automatic end to software support or compatibility.

The current new Steam Deck lineup
| Model | Storage | Display | US price checked August 18, 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steam Deck 512GB OLED | 512GB NVMe SSD | 7.4-inch HDR OLED, up to 90Hz | $789 |
| Steam Deck 1TB OLED | 1TB NVMe SSD | 7.4-inch HDR OLED, up to 90Hz, etched anti-glare glass | $949 |
These are US prices and can differ by country, tax, promotion, and regional availability. Valve’s official comparison page no longer presents a new 256GB LCD as part of the production lineup.
Why the new entry point is so much more expensive
The previous entry point was the 256GB LCD at about $399. Earlier coverage described the 512GB OLED as a $549 starting model, but that is historical pricing. Valve’s current US listing is $789 for the 512GB OLED.
That means the current new entry point is $390, or approximately 97.7%, above the old $399 LCD entry point. Valve attributed its 2026 OLED price increase to rising memory and storage costs in an official Steam announcement.

Valve has not publicly established every broader strategic reason for ending LCD production. Simplifying the lineup and concentrating on OLED models are reasonable interpretations, but claims that the LCD was discontinued specifically because of shortages, tariffs, or an imminent successor should be treated as speculation unless Valve confirms them.
What the 512GB OLED adds
The OLED model is more than an LCD Deck with extra storage. Compared with the LCD hardware, Valve lists these changes:
Rank #2
- International (UK) Version
- 7.4” diagonal, HDR OLED, 1280 x 800 x RGB, up to 90Hz Refresh rate, High performance touch, <0.1 ms Response time, 1,000 nits peak brightness (HDR), 600 nits (SDR)
- SteamOS 3.0 (Arch-based)
- 512GB NVMe SSD, 16GB LPDDR5 on-board RAM (5500 MT/s quad 32-bit channels), microSD UHS-I supports SD, SDXC and SDHC
- 6 nm AMD APU, CPU: Zen 2 4c/8t, 2.4-3.5GHz (up to 448 GFlops FP32
- Display: a 7.4-inch, 1280×800 HDR OLED panel instead of a 7-inch, 1280×800 LCD.
- Refresh rate: up to 90Hz rather than 60Hz.
- Battery: a 50Wh battery with a Valve-rated 3–12 hours of runtime, compared with 40Wh and 2–8 hours for the LCD model.
- Wireless: Wi-Fi 6E instead of Wi-Fi 5.
- APU process: a 6nm APU rather than the LCD model’s 7nm APU.
- Storage: 512GB NVMe storage as standard.
- Charger: a 45W supply with a 2.5m cable instead of the LCD model’s 1.5m cable.
The OLED screen provides stronger contrast, deeper blacks, HDR support, and a larger image. The improved battery capacity and efficiency also make it better suited to playing away from a charger. Valve’s battery figures are ranges rather than guarantees: demanding games, brightness, frame-rate settings, and wireless use all affect runtime.
Is the OLED a major performance upgrade?
No. The OLED Deck is best understood as a display, battery, connectivity, and refinement upgrade—not a Steam Deck 2-level performance replacement.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

The 6nm APU and efficiency improvements are meaningful, but the OLED model remains in the same general Steam Deck performance class. Buyers should not assume that every game will suddenly run at dramatically higher frame rates. The biggest day-to-day differences are the screen, battery behavior, wireless capability, and storage configuration.
Can you still buy an LCD Steam Deck?
| Source | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Valve new inventory | Possible remaining stock, depending on region and sell-through. |
| Valve-certified refurbished | LCD and OLED units may appear at lower prices, but inventory and pricing change. |
| Retailer clearance | Potential discounts, with the unit’s condition and warranty requiring careful verification. |
| Used marketplaces | Usually the cheapest route, but with greater battery, hardware, warranty, and return-policy risks. |
Check the official refurbished storefront for current availability rather than assuming a particular model or price will remain listed.
Is a used 256GB LCD still worth buying?
Yes, if the discount is substantial and your priorities are clear. A used LCD Deck remains a capable SteamOS handheld; discontinuation does not make it obsolete or automatically incompatible with existing games.

An LCD model makes the most sense when you:
- want the lowest possible purchase price;
- mostly play indoors or near a power outlet;
- are comfortable adding a microSD card;
- do not need HDR, OLED contrast, Wi-Fi 6E, or the longer battery rating; and
- can buy from a seller offering a meaningful return period or warranty.
The 256GB internal drive can fill quickly because modern PC games are often very large. A microSD card expands capacity, although internal NVMe storage is the more integrated option. Also consider that some users prefer LCD displays or are sensitive to OLED flicker or brightness behavior; OLED is not automatically the better choice for every person.
Used LCD inspection checklist
- Check battery health, charging behavior, and whether the battery drops unusually quickly.
- Test both analog sticks for drift, plus the triggers, bumpers, D-pad, trackpads, and rear buttons.
- Inspect the display for cracks, dead pixels, pressure marks, and uneven backlighting.
- Test the USB-C port, headphone output, speakers, fan, and microSD slot.
- Check SSD condition and confirm that the advertised storage matches the device.
- Verify that the original 45W charger is included, or price in a replacement.
- Confirm the return policy, warranty, seller reputation, and whether the unit is genuinely new, refurbished, or used.
Which Steam Deck should you buy?
Buy the 512GB OLED if you want a new Steam Deck
For a new purchase directly from Valve, the 512GB OLED is now the straightforward choice. It offers the better display, longer stated battery range, faster wireless standard, and 512GB of internal storage. It is also the model with the clearest warranty and return path when bought new.
At $789, however, it is not an automatic bargain. Budget buyers should compare that price with certified-refurbished inventory, discounted LCD units, and competing handhelds before committing.
Buy a refurbished or used LCD if price matters most
A discounted LCD is the better value when you mainly play plugged in, are happy with a 60Hz LCD, and can tolerate checking the hardware yourself. The discount should be meaningful enough to compensate for the older display, smaller battery, lower internal storage, and potentially weaker warranty coverage.
Buy a refurbished OLED if you want the OLED experience for less
A refurbished OLED can be the middle ground: the display and battery benefits without paying the full new price. Prioritize a credible warranty and return period, and do not assume that every refurbished listing has the same coverage.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
Choose the 1TB OLED for storage and the etched display
The $949 1TB OLED is aimed at buyers who want more internal space and the etched anti-glare glass. It is difficult to justify if you are comfortable using a microSD card and do not specifically value those features.
Consider a Windows handheld for a different priority
Devices such as the ASUS ROG Ally family or Lenovo Legion Go may be more suitable if you need Windows-first compatibility, multiple launchers, or access to games and anti-cheat systems that do not work well through SteamOS.
The trade-off is more operating-system maintenance and less of the console-like simplicity that makes Steam Deck attractive. Do not choose a Windows handheld solely because the OLED Deck costs more; choose it when its software compatibility and performance priorities match your library.
The practical verdict
Valve’s LCD phase-out is real, but the important wording is that production of the final 256GB LCD has ended. The 512GB OLED is now the cheapest new official Steam Deck, listed at $789 in the United States as of August 18, 2026.
Buy the OLED if you want a new Steam Deck and value its screen, battery, and refinements. Look for certified-refurbished, clearance, or used LCD stock if keeping the price low matters more than those improvements. The LCD is discontinued—not useless—and the OLED is a better overall Deck, but not a new performance generation.
