The Steam Deck OLED has an 8-compute-unit AMD RDNA 2 GPU, a 1280×800 display, and a 90 Hz maximum refresh rate. Those specifications describe the hardware and screen—not a promise that every game will run at a particular frame rate. Actual results depend on the game, its settings and updates, SteamOS drivers, and, for many Windows games, Proton.
Steam Deck OLED graphics hardware and screen
Valve lists the OLED model’s APU as a 6 nm AMD chip, with an 8-CU RDNA 2 GPU running at 1.6 GHz and peak FP32 performance of 1.6 TFLOPS. It also has 16 GB of onboard LPDDR5 memory. These figures describe the hardware; TFLOPS alone cannot predict how a particular game will perform. Valve’s Steam Deck technical specifications
| Specification | Steam Deck OLED |
|---|---|
| GPU architecture and compute units | AMD RDNA 2, 8 CUs |
| GPU clock | 1.6 GHz |
| Peak graphics performance | 1.6 TFLOPS FP32 |
| Onboard memory | 16 GB LPDDR5 |
| Built-in display | 7.4-inch HDR OLED, 1280×800, up to 90 Hz |
| Display brightness | Up to 1,000 nits peak HDR; 600 nits SDR |
The OLED screen’s contrast, HDR capability, brightness, and refresh rate affect how a game looks and how motion is presented. They do not increase the GPU’s rendering capacity. The maximum 90 Hz refresh rate is also not a guarantee that a game can render 90 frames per second.
What external display support does—and does not—mean
Valve lists DisplayPort over USB-C output up to 8K at 60 Hz or 4K at 120 Hz. This describes supported display output modes, not the Deck’s ability to render demanding games at those resolutions and frame rates. For docked graphics or performance problems, Valve advises adjusting in-game settings. Valve’s technical specifications and Steam Deck docked display guidance

What Valve’s 30 fps compatibility target means
Valve’s Steam Deck compatibility checklist uses a playable default configuration that reaches 30 fps at 800p. It recommends support for the built-in 1280×800 resolution or 1280×720 where possible. Valve’s stated target is a compatibility criterion—not a guarantee of locked 30 fps in every scene, at every setting, or after future game updates. Valve’s Steam Deck compatibility checklist
Valve describes the requirement this way: “On Steam Deck, this is 30fps at 800p, and on Steam Machine this is 30fps at 1080p.” The statement refers to the playable default configuration in Valve’s compatibility guidance; it is not a promise about every title’s performance.

Why game performance and image quality vary
Resolution and graphics settings
A game rendered at the native 1280×800 resolution with high detail can place a different load on the GPU than the same game at reduced settings or a lower internal resolution. A lower resolution or detail level can improve performance, but may reduce clarity or introduce upscaling artifacts. There is no single settings combination that suits every game.
Game optimization, updates, and Proton
Games without native Linux builds run through Proton, Valve’s compatibility layer for Windows games. Valve calls Proton a work in progress, so compatibility and performance can depend on the game build and software support as well as the GPU. Valve’s Steam Deck compatibility documentation

SteamOS graphics support can change over time. Valve’s SteamOS 3.8.28 release notes report a Mesa driver update with ray-tracing performance improvements and other changes, including improved VRAM management when video memory is limited. The notes do not quantify gains for specific games, so they do not establish a frame-rate increase you can expect in a particular title. Valve’s SteamOS 3.8.28 release notes
Refresh rate, frame rate, and frame pacing
A display’s refresh rate is how often it can update the image; frame rate is how often the game produces new frames. A higher refresh-rate setting cannot make a GPU render more frames by itself. When comparing performance, a stable frame rate and consistent frame pacing can matter as much as an average fps figure.

How to judge whether a game suits the Deck
For a useful comparison, look beyond one headline frame-rate number. A test or review should make clear which model and software context it covers, and how the game was configured.
- Resolution and detail: Check whether the game runs at native 1280×800, a lower internal resolution, or reduced graphics settings.
- Frame-rate behavior: Distinguish a stable target from fluctuations; when measured, frame pacing and minimums help explain the experience alongside average fps.
- Image quality: Consider detail, readability on the built-in screen, and any artifacts introduced by upscaling.
- Software support: Account for native Linux support or Proton, graphics-driver support, and game updates.
- Display context: Separate handheld play from docked output and note the selected refresh-rate target. A monitor’s supported resolution does not demonstrate that the Deck can render a game smoothly at that resolution.
For a reproducible frame-rate claim, a benchmark should identify the Deck model, SteamOS and driver context, game version, resolution, graphics preset, upscaling or frame-generation mode, test method, and whether the result is an average, a minimum, or a frame-time observation.

Historical Deck benchmarks: useful context, not OLED predictions
Early reviews illustrate why performance numbers need their test context. Ars Technica’s February 2022 review reported near 60 fps in Monster Hunter Rise at near-maximum settings, and 35–50 fps in Dying Light 2 at low-to-medium settings while targeting 60 fps. Tom’s Hardware’s 2022 review reported a Civilization VI graphics benchmark result of 76 fps on low and 43–44 fps on ultra at 1280×800, and discussed controls such as frame-rate limits and AMD FSR upscaling. Ars Technica’s 2022 review; Tom’s Hardware’s 2022 review
Those are launch-era review measurements, not current Steam Deck OLED results. They reflect the reviewers’ hardware, software, game versions, settings, and test conditions at the time; they should not be used as present-day frame-rate promises.
