If Steam isn’t remembering or accepting your password, use Steam Support’s official password-recovery flow and search with the account name, email address, or phone number linked to the account. If Steam accepts the password but then asks for a Steam Guard code, that is a separate sign-in check—not a failed password reset. If you suspect someone else took over the account, use the stolen-account recovery route instead.
Reset a forgotten or rejected Steam password
- Open Steam Support’s “I forgot my password” page.
- Search for the account using its Steam account name, associated email address, or associated phone number.
- Follow the recovery options shown for that account. Steam’s next steps can depend on the account’s available recovery methods, so rely on the prompts rather than expecting one universal email or SMS sequence.
- If Steam cannot find the account, use the Support option presented on the page. For other sign-in problems, open Steam’s sign-in help and choose the issue that matches your situation.
Changing the password does not necessarily finish sign-in. Steam may still require a Steam Guard code, particularly on a device it does not recognize.
Steam accepts the password but asks for Steam Guard
Steam Guard is an additional authentication step. Depending on your settings, its code may arrive by email or be available in the Steam Mobile app. Treat a Guard prompt as a separate code or authenticator-access issue, not as proof that the password is wrong. Steam explains the distinction in its Steam Guard guidance.
If the Steam Guard email does not arrive
- Confirm you are checking the inbox associated with the Steam account, then inspect spam or junk folders.
- Add
[email protected]and[email protected]to your trusted senders. - Allow up to 30 minutes for the email to arrive.
- If it still has not arrived, try signing in again to request a new code. Follow the current prompts on Steam’s Steam Guard Code Help page.
If you use the Steam Mobile app
Use the authentication or sign-in options the app and Steam present. Steam’s mobile authenticator codes change every 30 seconds, and the app also supports QR sign-in when configured. A phone number associated with the account can support SMS password recovery; these options depend on access to the relevant phone or app and do not replace every account-recovery step. If the same device keeps asking for Steam Guard
Repeated “new device” checks can happen when browser privacy settings prevent cookies from being stored or software clears browser data. That can cause Steam to recognize the device again as new. It does not fix a forgotten password; address the password and Guard prompt as separate problems.
If you suspect your Steam account was stolen
Do not keep repeating ordinary password recovery if someone may have changed the account details or taken control. Choose the stolen-account option in Steam’s sign-in help and follow its account-specific instructions.

Secure the email account tied to Steam as well. Steam identifies compromised email, malware, and phishing as possible routes to account theft. Its Steam Guard FAQ states, “Steam Support is exclusively handled through help.steampowered.com.” Do not give your password or authenticator codes to anyone claiming to represent Valve through another contact channel. The same FAQ warns that access to a compromised email account may let an attacker reset the Steam password; email access alone does not guarantee recovery in every situation. If you have lost access to the account email
Check the recovery choices Steam offers for your account. If a phone number was added, Steam’s contact-email guidance says a browser-based reset may be available after confirming by SMS; availability depends on the account and the prompts shown. See Changing the Contact E-mail for a Steam Account.

After you regain access
Use a unique Steam password rather than reusing the password for your email account. Keep your email and devices secure, and never share a Steam Guard code with someone who contacts you outside Steam’s official Support site.
