Steam Deck OLED Is Cool, but What About Steam Deck 2? Here’s What We Know

Valve is working toward a Steam Deck successor, but it has not announced a release date or window. The company says it wants a substantial performance leap that preserves the handheld’s battery-life and power balance—not a routine yearly refresh. That leaves a practical choice: buy the available Steam Deck OLED if you want to play now, or wait an unspecified amount of time for a future model.

Is Steam Deck 2 coming out?

Valve has indicated that a successor is in its plans, but there is no confirmed launch window. In an April 2026 report, PC Gamer said Valve representative and Steam Deck designer Pierre-Loup Griffais described the company as “hard at work” on Steam Deck 2 while declining to provide a date. He also said work on Valve’s other hardware projects could inform the device. PC Gamer’s April 2026 report is a status update, not a release announcement.

The latest located comments, reported by PC Gamer on September 15, 2026, say Valve remains focused on a clear generational performance improvement. Asked about memory supply conditions, Griffais said they had “not really” changed the goals, but that Valve would assess current conditions and decide how and when it could deliver such a product. That does not establish a date—or prove that supply conditions cannot affect timing. Read the September 2026 report.

What does Valve want from Steam Deck 2?

Valve’s stated bar is a meaningful improvement in computing performance without giving up the traits that make a handheld practical: manageable power use and useful battery life. In 2025 remarks reported by PC Gamer, Griffais said the available system-on-chip options had not yet delivered what Valve considered next-generation Steam Deck performance. In September 2026, he reiterated that Valve wants a “very delineated performance improvement” for a future Deck.

  • 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
  • Wi-Fi 6E
  • 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
  • Carrying case with removable liner

Valve designers have also pushed back on an annual-refresh model. In an October 2024 interview reported by PC Gamer, designer Lawrence Yang said, “we really do want to wait for a generational leap in compute without sacrificing battery life before we ship the real second generation of Steam Deck.” Hardware designer Yazan Aldehayyat described the aim as substantial performance improvement within a similar power range and a comparable balance between weight and battery life. These are interview comments reported by the publisher, not a formal specification or promise about the finished product. PC Gamer’s 2024 interview report has the full context.

What the Steam Deck OLED offers now

The OLED is a current Steam Deck option, not an announced second generation. Valve lists a 7.4-inch HDR OLED display with refresh rates up to 90Hz, a 50Wh battery, Wi-Fi 6E, microSD expansion and dock compatibility. Valve estimates 3–12 hours of gameplay depending on the content being played; that range is not a guarantee for a particular game or settings. Valve also claims 30–50% more battery life than the LCD model, a comparison claim rather than a promise of a fixed runtime. Valve’s OLED product page lists specifications and compatibility details.

The OLED refresh updated several parts of the existing device, including its display, battery, thermals, wireless hardware and controls; Valve specifies a 6nm APU for the OLED. In 2023, designer Lawrence Yang called it the “definitive first-generation Steam Deck.” That description underscores the distinction: OLED is a more refined model within the first generation, not confirmation that Steam Deck 2 has arrived. Axios’s November 2023 report covered Yang’s remarks and the then-current roadmap discussion.

Should you buy a Steam Deck OLED or wait?

There is no confirmed Steam Deck 2 date to plan around, so the decision depends on whether you want a handheld now or are comfortable waiting without a schedule. The OLED is the known option; the successor’s price, final specifications and availability are not confirmed in the sources cited here.

  • Choose the OLED if you want to play now. You can weigh its screen and battery specifications, storage configuration and regional price against your budget and the games you play. It supports microSD storage expansion and dock use, as documented by Valve.
  • Wait if you specifically want a next-generation performance step. Valve has said that kind of improvement is its goal, but it has not announced when a device meeting that goal will ship.

Older timing guesses should not be treated as a current roadmap. Axios reported a two-to-three-year expectation in 2023 for suitable hardware; that was a contemporaneous estimate, not a present-day release forecast. Likewise, any proposed launch year or chip designation not confirmed by Valve remains speculation. There is no verified Steam Deck 2 specification sheet or price to compare against the OLED.
