No specific drive models, prices, or datasheets have been verified here, so there is no evidence-based model winner to name. If you mainly want more room for games and would rather not open the Deck, microSD is Valve-supported storage expansion.
What fits inside a Steam Deck?
iFixit identifies the Deck’s SSD as a single-sided M.2 2230 drive. Kingston gives the same replacement criteria and notes that newer drives operate at the Deck’s supported PCIe Gen 3 x4 level. Check the specification for the precise model you plan to buy; a familiar brand name or a listing that says only “NVMe” is not enough to establish fit.

Use the LCD or OLED repair guide that matches your device. iFixit’s LCD SSD guide directs OLED owners to the separate OLED guide and notes that internal designs have changed. A product lineup or storage capacity does not identify the internal revision of an individual Deck.
Valve lists these factory storage configurations:
| Steam Deck version | Valve-listed internal storage | Expansion |
|---|---|---|
| LCD | 64 GB, 256 GB, or 512 GB | microSD |
| OLED | 512 GB or 1 TB NVMe SSD | microSD |
These are the configurations on Valve’s specifications pages, not a limit on the capacity of a replacement SSD. Availability of particular LCD configurations may vary; Valve marks some as available while supplies last.

How to compare 2230 NVMe drive candidates
Compare exact model specifications and the seller’s current local listing. The points below are checks, not a ranking: no specific model datasheets or listings were verified, so prices, warranty terms, seller authorization, and model-level power or thermal figures are not established here.
| Comparison point | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Physical fit | Listing or manufacturer specification explicitly identifies M.2 2230, NVMe, and single-sided construction. This is the core compatibility check. |
| Capacity | Choose based on the size of the game library you want on the internal drive and your budget. The factory capacity does not, by itself, establish a replacement-capacity ceiling. |
| Interface and advertised speed | Check the exact drive’s interface and manufacturer-published speeds. A higher advertised PCIe generation is not evidence of a guaranteed speed increase in the Deck; Kingston says newer drives run at the Deck’s PCIe Gen 3 x4 support level. |
| Price and value | Check live regional pricing and compare price per capacity at the time you buy. No current price was verified. |
| Warranty and seller | Confirm the warranty applies in your region and establish whether the seller is authorized. Neither is established for any particular listing here. |
| Power and thermals | Compare manufacturer data if available. Sequential-speed claims alone do not establish Deck battery life, temperature, or fan noise. |
| Installation effort | An internal swap involves opening the Deck and then recovering or reinstalling SteamOS. A microSD card avoids internal disassembly. |
Should you replace the SSD or add a microSD card?
Valve confirms that games can be stored on microSD. That makes a card the more direct option when the goal is simply extra game storage and avoiding internal repair. Replacing the SSD changes the internal drive, but involves opening the device and completing separate SteamOS recovery or reinstall steps. Neither option’s value can be established without the prices and capacities available to you.

What an internal SSD swap involves
The SSD replacement is a hardware repair followed by software recovery; changing the drive does not install an operating system. iFixit’s guide covers removal and replacement and points to Valve’s Steam Deck recovery instructions for recovering, repairing, or re-imaging SteamOS. Use those current instructions rather than assuming the replacement drive will boot with SteamOS already installed.
Before opening the Deck, follow iFixit’s preparation guidance for the exact model. It recommends ESD precautions, putting the battery in storage mode, removing any microSD card, and having a USB stick ready for reinstalling SteamOS. Its SSD guide lists Phillips screwdrivers, opening picks, and tweezers among the tools. Follow the matching LCD or OLED guide, including its instructions for transferring the SSD shielding. This is a repair with device-specific steps, not a risk-free or universally easy upgrade.
