Steam Deck vs. ARM Handhelds: Which Is Better for PC Gaming?

Steam Deck offers the clearer documented path to local Steam gaming. ARM handhelds vary: check the exact device, game compatibility, and whether you’ll play locally or stream.

For playing a Steam library locally with the least uncertainty, Steam Deck is the clearer choice. It is an x86 handheld PC with SteamOS, Proton, and Valve’s Deck Verified system. “ARM handheld,” by contrast, describes devices with different hardware and software; Valve’s work to run x86 games on ARM through Steam Frame does not establish that every ARM device can run the Steam Deck library. The better fit depends on the games you want and whether you plan to play locally, use Android versions, or stream from a PC.

What you’re comparing: one device versus a broad category

Steam Deck is a specific handheld PC. Valve says, “Steam Deck is a PC, but it doesn’t come with Windows,” in its 2022 Steam Deck booklet. Its hardware uses an AMD APU with a Zen 2 CPU and RDNA 2 GPU, 16 GB of LPDDR5 memory, and SteamOS 3. The OLED model has a 7.4-inch OLED display; specifications differ between Deck models, so check the exact version rather than treating the range as one configuration. See Valve’s technical specifications.

ARM handhelds are not a single platform. They can differ in operating system, chip, controls, display, game storefronts, and whether games run on the device or stream from another PC. Without a specific ARM model and game list, there is no sound universal performance or value winner.

Why Steam Deck is the more documented route to a Steam library

SteamOS, Proton, and game status

SteamOS is Linux-based. Valve’s Steam Deck software overview describes Proton as a compatibility layer that lets games run without developers having to port them. Valve’s Deck Verified program reports how games play on Deck, but it is not a guarantee that every Steam title works equally well. Check each must-play game’s status, and pay particular attention to multiplayer games: online services and anti-cheat systems can affect whether a game runs.

#1 Best Overall
Valve Steam Deck OLED 1TB Handheld Gaming Console
  • 1TB NVMe SSD
  • 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
  • Wi-Fi 6E
  • 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
  • Carrying case with removable liner

Valve’s 2026 Steamworks presentation reports more than 25,000 games in the combined “Playable or Verified” categories for Steam Deck. That is Valve’s stated count, not an independent audit, and the combined figure does not mean every listed game has the same experience. See the Steam Hardware Overview.

Controls and hardware details that can matter in PC games

Deck includes full-size thumbsticks, trackpads, gyro, and four assignable rear buttons, alongside quick suspend/resume and a desktop mode, according to Valve’s Steam Deck OLED product information. Trackpads and gyro can offer additional control options in games designed around a mouse or keyboard; whether they help depends on the game and your preferred setup.

For the OLED model, Valve lists a 1280 × 800, 7.4-inch HDR OLED screen with refresh rates up to 90 Hz, Wi-Fi 6E, and a 50 Wh battery. Its stated gameplay range is 3–12 hours, depending on content; that is an estimate, not a promise for a particular game or settings. Check the model-specific figures on the specifications page.

What Valve’s ARM work does—and does not—mean

Valve’s 2026 Steamworks talk describes expanding Proton for ARM64 so x86 games can run on Steam Frame’s ARM chip using FEX. It also describes Android versions as another possible route for games that already have mobile-optimized builds. This is evidence of Valve pursuing more than one path for Steam Frame; it is not a compatibility guarantee for arbitrary ARM handhelds or proof that the entire Steam Deck library runs locally across them. The details are in Valve’s Steam Hardware Talk: ARM and FEX.

Be clear about the play mode when evaluating an ARM device:

  • Local x86-game compatibility: The device runs the game on its ARM hardware through a compatibility layer. Support depends on the device’s software and the individual game.
  • Android-native play: The game runs as an Android build, where one exists. This is not the same as running the PC edition.
  • Streaming: A gaming PC runs the game and sends the picture to the handheld. This depends on a capable host PC and a suitable network, rather than the handheld running the PC game itself.

Valve’s presentation says Steam Frame streaming is optimized without requiring special developer integration, while standalone verification has separate criteria. Those statements concern Steam Frame; they should not be generalized to every ARM product.

How to choose for your games and setup

  1. Write down the games you must play. Include multiplayer titles and note which storefront or edition you use.
  2. Check Steam Deck status title by title. Use Deck Verified information, then confirm current reports or requirements for games whose online or anti-cheat features are essential. A Deck status is evidence about Deck, not a cross-platform score for ARM devices.
  3. For each ARM candidate, verify the exact route. Find out whether the specific model runs the PC game locally, offers an Android build, or relies on streaming. Check compatibility for the exact game, not just broad claims about ARM support.
  4. Compare the actual devices. Review operating system, controls, screen, battery, comfort, support, game services, and performance in the games you care about. Available information here does not provide controlled benchmarks against named ARM handhelds, so it cannot support a speed ranking or price/value verdict.
  5. Decide whether you need local play. If you want to play without a host PC, confirm that the handheld runs your games itself. If streaming is acceptable, assess the host PC and network as part of the setup.

Storage and external-display use

Steam Deck supports microSD expansion and USB-C connections for displays and peripherals. A dock or compatible USB-C hub can make it easier to connect external equipment, but Valve says docking does not improve performance. See the Steam Deck FAQ for docking details.
