1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBuy a Steam game in Early Access only if you already want to play the version available now. Early Access gives you access to a work-in-progress build; planned updates, added content and polish are not guaranteed. If you would rather judge a more finished offering, wait for release and check what the game actually includes then.
What you are buying in Early Access
Steam’s store notice says, “Early Access games are not complete and may or may not change further.” That means the current build—not a promised future version—is the basis for your decision. Read the game’s Early Access description to see what is playable today and what the developer says remains to be done.

Plans can be informative, but they are not platform guarantees. For example, the Steam listing for Tyr says its core gameplay in Early Access represents what the developer plans for the final game, with more content, polish and refinement expected. That is one developer’s statement about one game, not a promise Steam makes for all Early Access titles.

| Decision | Buy in Early Access | Wait for release |
|---|---|---|
| What you can play | The current build, which may be incomplete and may change. | A later build; check the actual release version and reviews when available. |
| Uncertainty | Systems, content, balance, polish and development plans may change. | You can assess what is included at launch, but release alone does not establish that a game is complete or bug-free. |
| Refund timing | Early Access playtime counts toward Steam’s two-hour playtime limit. The 14-day period for a pre-release purchase begins on release. | If you buy before release and cannot play beforehand, Steam says you may request a refund any time before release; the usual 14-day and two-hour limits begin on release. |
| Best fit | You want to play what exists now and are comfortable with an evolving game. | You prefer to wait for more content, polish and evidence about the final offering. |
How to assess a specific Early Access game
- Read the Early Access section on its Steam store page. Identify what works now, what is missing and what is only planned. Steam itself advises waiting if you are not excited to play the current state.
- Look for a concrete development explanation. Check why the team is using Early Access, what has already been implemented and what remains. Treat its roadmap or description as the developer’s plan, not a guarantee of delivery.
- Check recent player feedback and update notes. These can help you judge the particular game’s current direction, but they do not establish a general success rate for Early Access titles.
- Confirm the current build suits you. Review the listed system requirements and verify that the features you care about are available now.
- Decide whether today’s version is worth its price to you. If missing content, bugs or changing systems would make it a poor fit, waiting is reasonable.
How Steam refunds work for pre-release games
Valve’s general refund policy for games and software applications describes a refund window of within two weeks of purchase and less than two hours of playtime. For a game bought before release, the two-hour playtime limit applies (except for beta testing), while the 14-day period does not start until the release date. Valve specifically says Early Access playtime counts toward the two-hour limit, so playing more than two hours before release can affect refund eligibility even though the 14-day period has not begun.

Refund requests go through Steam Support. These are Valve’s policy terms; check the live policy and any consumer rights that apply where you live.

Steam’s notice puts the decision plainly: “If you are not excited to play this game in its current state, then you should wait to see if the game progresses further in development.” Waiting lets you evaluate the release build and then-current player feedback rather than paying now on the assumption that future plans will be fulfilled.
