Valve’s official Steamworks meaning for result code 50 is k_EResultAlreadyLoggedInElsewhere: the account is logged in somewhere else. However, some games and third-party guides use “Steam Error Code 50” for broader login, launch, download, or connection failures. Check the exact wording and where the message appears before choosing a fix.
Try this first: close Steam on every PC, Steam Deck, or shared computer; exit Steam completely; reopen it; and sign in again. If the error occurs during a download or update, start with Steam’s download cache and region settings instead.

What Steam Error Code 50 means
Steam Error Code 50 is not one universal consumer-facing error. Valve’s Steamworks result-code documentation defines result 50 as an account that is already logged in elsewhere. That usually points to another active or stale Steam session.
But a game, launcher, or anti-cheat component may display a Steamworks result without showing its original context. Other Steam connection problems have separate result codes, including no-connection, timeout, service-unavailable, and connection-failed results. In practice, “Error Code 50” can therefore refer to:

The location of the message is the quickest way to select the right troubleshooting path.
| Where the error appears | Start with |
|---|---|
| Steam sign-in or account switching | Close other sessions, fully restart Steam, then check account security. |
| Launching one game | Restart Steam and verify that game’s files. |
| Downloading or updating | Clear the download cache, change download region, and test the network. |
| Online multiplayer or several Steam features | Check service status, VPN/proxy settings, firewall permissions, and the network. |
10 easy ways to fix Steam Error Code 50
1. Read the full error message
Before changing settings, note the exact wording and location. Record whether the message appears while signing in, switching accounts, launching a game, downloading an update, joining an online session, or inside another launcher or anti-cheat program.
Also check whether the Steam Store, Community, Friends, and other games work. A message that specifically says logged in elsewhere requires a different fix from an error that says Steam cannot connect.

If the message corresponds to Valve’s official result 50, exit Steam on every device that might still be using the account:
- another Windows or macOS computer;
- a Steam Deck;
- a shared household PC;
- a second Windows user account; or
- a computer where Steam was closed but a game or Steam process remained active.
After closing those sessions, try signing in again. A recently changed password or account-recovery event can also leave you checking devices you no longer use.
If it fails: continue with a complete client restart. If you do not recognize the other session, skip to the account-security step below.
3. Fully restart the Steam client
Closing the Steam window does not always stop every Steam process. On Windows:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Open Steam’s Steam menu and choose Exit.
- Wait a few seconds. Do not do this while a game is saving, syncing, or installing an update.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- If Steam did not close normally, end the remaining Steam processes.
- Reopen Steam and sign in.
Only end Steam-related processes after confirming that no game is saving data or writing an update. If a full restart clears the error, the original problem was likely a stale client session or failed handoff.

4. Secure the account if the session is unfamiliar
Do not assume that an unrecognized session proves your account was hacked, but treat it as a security warning. Change your Steam password if:
- you do not recognize the other device or session;
- the error returns after every known device has been closed;
- you receive unfamiliar account notifications; or
- you suspect someone else has access.
Use official Steam Support for account recovery. Do not give your password or authentication codes to third-party “recovery” services.
Changing the password is not normally the first-line fix for an ordinary stale session. It is appropriate when the session cannot be explained or account control is in doubt.

If sign-in, the Store, Community, Friends, downloads, and several games fail at the same time, the problem may be service-side or maintenance-related. Valve’s sign-in troubleshooting guidance lists maintenance, local-network problems, conflicting programs, and ISP issues among possible causes.
Check Steam’s official support pages and retry later if multiple features are unavailable. Do not conclude that Steam is down from one isolated Error Code 50 message.
6. Restart the router and test another connection
Restart the modem or router, reconnect the computer, and try Steam again. If possible, test a phone hotspot or another trusted network.
The result helps isolate the fault:
- Steam works on the other network: the original router, ISP, DNS configuration, firewall, VPN, or network policy is the likely cause.
- Steam fails everywhere: an account, client, game, or Steam service problem is more likely.
If the issue happens only at certain times, contact your ISP or retry later. Valve notes that ISP-side blocking or connection shaping can affect Steam traffic.

Re-enable protection after testing. Do not permanently disable antivirus or firewall protection, and do not treat a VPN as a universal fix. A VPN can help diagnose routing or ISP filtering, but it may add latency, conceal the underlying problem, or violate a school, workplace, hotel, or ISP policy.
University, work, and other managed networks may block Steam traffic or required ports. Valve discusses proxy and university-network restrictions in its network connectivity FAQ. Contact the network administrator rather than attempting to bypass a policy.
8. Clear Steam’s download cache
Use this step mainly when Error Code 50 appears while downloading, installing, or updating a game:
- Open Steam settings.
- Open Downloads.
- Choose Clear Download Cache. Steam may ask you to sign in again.
- Retry the download or update.
Steam’s layout and labels can vary by client release and operating system, so look for the current Clear Download Cache control rather than relying on an old screenshot.
This clears local download state; it is not the definitive fix for an account that is genuinely logged in elsewhere. It may also log you out, so have your sign-in and Steam Guard access available.
9. Flush DNS and change the download region
On Windows, open Command Prompt and run:
ipconfig /flushdns
Reconnect to the network and retry Steam. Flushing DNS can help with stale name-resolution data, but it cannot end another Steam session, repair an outage, or unblock ports.
For download-only failures, open Steam’s Settings → Downloads area and select another download region. Valve’s SteamPipe troubleshooting documentation recommends checking the download region and, when appropriate, trying another region because a content server may be returning bad or incomplete data.

Changing DNS is an optional diagnostic, not a guaranteed solution. If another DNS provider changes nothing, restore your normal settings and continue with the network or account path.

10. Verify game files, repair the library, or reinstall Steam last
If only one game fails to launch while Steam itself works, verify that game’s files:
- Open the Steam Library.
- Right-click the affected game and select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
Steam will replace missing or damaged content. This can help after an interrupted update, but it normally does not resolve an account-authentication error or a session logged in elsewhere.
Reinstalling Steam should be the final resort, after confirming that the issue is not an outage, account state, network restriction, or one game’s files. Protect your game library first, especially the steamapps folder, and confirm what the uninstaller will remove. Valve’s troubleshooting material recommends less destructive steps such as restarting devices, checking firewall settings, verifying the download region, clearing relevant caches, and reinstalling only after those steps fail. Manual deletion of folders such as appcache or depotcache is more invasive than using Steam’s built-in cache control and should not be the first move.
Use the symptom to choose the right path
Login or account-switching error
Close Steam on every device, fully restart the client, and investigate account security if the session is unfamiliar. DNS changes, file verification, and download-region changes address different layers and are unlikely to solve a genuine “logged in elsewhere” result.
Download or update error
Clear the download cache, try another download region, restart the router, and test another network. If only one game’s content is affected, verify its files after the download issue is isolated.
One-game launch error
Restart Steam, verify the game files, and check whether the game’s launcher or anti-cheat component is generating the message. A game may expose a Steam API result without meaning that the Steam client itself has a universal Error Code 50.
Several Steam features fail together
Check official Steam support information, then test without a VPN or proxy and on another network. If the problem affects a school or work connection only, ask the administrator about Steam traffic.

If none of the fixes work
Contact official Steam Support and include:
- a screenshot of the exact error;
- where it appears and what action triggers it;
- the affected game, including its App ID if known;
- whether all games or only one are affected;
- whether another network or hotspot works; and
- Steam client or game logs if Support requests them.
Never include your password, Steam Guard code, recovery code, or full payment details in a support request or screenshot.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Reinstalling Steam first: this wastes time and can create unnecessary library-management problems.
- Changing DNS for an account problem: DNS cannot end a competing session.
- Disabling security software permanently: this creates risk without proving the cause.
- Deleting cache folders manually: use Steam’s built-in download-cache control first.
- Verifying files for a login error: file verification repairs game content, not account authentication.
- Assuming browser and client behavior are identical: Valve notes that the Steam client accesses the account differently from a web browser.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: if Steam explicitly says the account is logged in elsewhere, close every other session and fully restart Steam. For download errors, use the download-cache and region steps; for connection failures, test the network, VPN, proxy, firewall, and ISP. Verify game files only when one game is affected, and reinstall Steam only after the less destructive paths fail.
