To permanently remove a game from your Steam account, open Steam Support, sign in, choose Games, Software, etc., select the game, choose I want to permanently remove this game from my account, and confirm with Ok, remove the listed games from my account permanently.
Steam’s wording is explicit, but removing a game is not the same as uninstalling it, hiding it, or requesting a refund. Treat account removal as forfeiting access unless Steam provides a recovery option later.

Choose the right Steam action first
“Delete a game from Steam” can mean several different things. Choose based on the result you actually want:
| Goal | Best action | What it does | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free up storage | Uninstall | Removes the installed game files from your computer | The game remains owned and visible in your Steam library |
| Remove library clutter | Hide the game | Removes it from ordinary library views | You still own it and can find it through filters, search, account records, or Support |
| Get your money back | Request a refund | Refunds the purchase if Valve approves the request and revokes access | Eligibility and exceptions are governed by Steam’s refund policy |
| Remove the title from your account | Steam Support removal | Uses Steam’s product-removal workflow to remove the title’s account association | Do not assume it deletes local files, historical data, or a reusable key |
| Erase your entire Steam presence | Delete your Steam account | Removes the whole account and its associated licenses and data | This is permanent and far too drastic for removing one game |
Before permanently removing a game
- Check whether you want a refund. If so, request it before removing the product from your account.
- Back up saves you care about. Save locations vary by game and operating system. Do not assume Steam Cloud preserves every save or that account removal deletes cloud data.
- Confirm the exact product. DLC, soundtracks, tools, bundles, free-to-play titles, and key-activated products may appear separately.
- Check ownership. A Family Sharing title may belong to another account, so it may disappear without being yours to remove.
- Be certain you can give up access. Steam does not publish a general guarantee that every individually removed game can be restored.
How to permanently remove a game from your Steam account
- Go to Steam Support.
- Sign in to the Steam account that owns the game.
- Select Games, Software, etc.
- Search for the game and select the correct product entry.
- Scroll through the available issue categories and choose I want to permanently remove this game from my account.
- Read Steam’s warning carefully.
- Confirm by selecting Ok, remove the listed games from my account permanently.
Steam may change the labels or their placement. The Support website is the canonical route, and the options can differ for paid games, DLC, bundles, subscriptions, free-to-play products, and third-party keys.

- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required

Some Steam client versions provide a Support link from a game’s Library page or through Help → Steam Support. That normally leads to the same product-specific workflow. If the client route is unavailable, use the web-based Support page.
What permanent removal does—and does not—do
It does not necessarily uninstall the game
Account ownership and local installation are separate. A removed game may remain installed on your computer. If your goal is to reclaim disk space, uninstall it separately from the Steam client, then check for leftover files, mods, Workshop content, shader caches, or configuration data. Their locations vary by game; deleting a folder manually does not remove the Steam account association.
Valve’s documentation likewise distinguishes local Steam and game-data removal from account actions. On macOS, for example, retaining the SteamApps folder can preserve downloaded game data and potentially local saves when Steam itself is removed. The practical lesson is simple: back up saves first, uninstall separately, and do not assume either action handles every file.
It does not automatically refund the purchase
Removing a game is not a refund request. If you want your money back, use Steam’s separate refund process:
- Open Steam Support and sign in.
- Choose Purchases.
- Select the relevant transaction.
- Choose the problem category, then I’d like to request a refund.
- Submit the request and choose Steam Wallet or the original payment method where available.
Valve’s standard rule is generally a request within 14 days of purchase and less than two hours of playtime. Valve may consider requests outside those limits, but approval is discretionary. Approved refunds can take up to seven days to appear; Steam Wallet refunds may arrive in approximately 24–48 hours.
If a refund may apply, submit the request before account removal while the purchase is easy to find in your transaction history.

It may not erase every historical record
Do not describe removal as erasing every trace of the game. Valve’s published refund FAQ explicitly says that an approved refund does not remove associated playtime or achievements from the Steam Community Profile.
Valve does not provide an equally detailed public guarantee covering every type of data after individual-game removal. The behavior of achievements, playtime, screenshots, artwork, reviews, guides, Workshop content, badges, activity history, and third-party statistics may vary. Treat account removal as removal of access or account association—not as a guaranteed profile scrub.
It does not reliably free up a product key
An activated Steam key should be treated as tied to the account. Removing a product does not reliably make its key reusable, transferable, giftable, or valid on another account. Valve’s account-deletion and license guidance does not support using removal as a way to transfer ownership.
DLC, bundles, free-to-play games, and keys
DLC
Steam Support may list downloadable content as a separate product. Removing DLC does not necessarily remove the base game, and removing the base game does not necessarily remove every separately owned add-on. Check the exact product name before confirming.
Bundles and packages
A bundle can grant several products or packages. Select the precise edition or component shown by Steam Support rather than assuming that removing one entry affects the entire bundle.

Free products can be attached to an account as licenses or subscriptions rather than conventional purchases. They may appear differently in the library and Support interface. You can inspect products associated with your account at Steam’s license page, but not every item can necessarily be removed from that page.

Third-party keys
A key activated on Steam is not automatically released when the product is removed. Do not remove a title expecting to reuse or move the key.
Can a removed Steam game be restored?
Do not rely on restoration. Some Steam Community reports describe finding a removed title through Support and using a missing from my library option. Other users report that the option is unavailable or that removal is effectively permanent for particular products. Valve’s public documentation reviewed for this guide does not establish a universal restoration policy.
If you change your mind:
- Search Steam Support for the title while signed in.
- Look for an ownership or missing-library recovery option.
- If no option appears, contact Steam Support and provide proof of purchase or activation.
Do not assume that a recovered title will restore its DLC, achievements, playtime, saves, or profile history.

Use Steam’s Hide this game library control when you want to keep ownership but remove the title from ordinary library views. Hiding is reversible and preserves the ability to reinstall.
A hidden game may still be discoverable through library filters, search, purchase history, account records, or Steam Support. It is a visibility setting, not account deletion.

Removing a game is not a complete parental-control or anti-distraction solution. Consider combining an uninstall with controls appropriate to your situation:

A cached library entry does not by itself prove that removal failed. Try this sequence:
- Restart Steam.
- Sign out and sign back in.
- Check View → Hidden Games.
- Review your account license list.
- Confirm that you removed the correct edition, DLC, bundle component, or product.
- Contact Steam Support if the product remains accessible or the removal produced an error.
If the game is still installed, uninstall it separately and inspect its installation folder for leftovers. Do not delete local files as a substitute for the Support workflow.
Do not delete your Steam account to remove one game
Steam account deletion is an entirely different process. According to Valve’s account-deletion guidance, it affects the entire account, including game licenses, the Community profile, gifts, inventory items, Steam Wallet funds, and other associated information. Valve requires proof of ownership, and deletion enters a waiting period during which it can be canceled.
Deleting your Steam account to remove one unwanted game would also destroy access to the rest of your library. Use the product-specific Support removal option instead.
