It replaced the older Steam Family Sharing and Steam Family View features, bringing eligible shared games and child-account controls together in one place.
What Steam Families does
Valve first introduced Steam Families in the Steam Beta Client on March 18, 2024, describing it as a single place to manage which games family members can access and when they can play. Steam Families combines game sharing with parental controls. Members continue to use their individual Steam accounts; sharing does not transfer ownership of a game. When someone plays an eligible shared title, they use their own saves and earn their own Steam achievements.
How game sharing works
Joining a Steam Family gives members access to other members’ eligible games. The number of copies in the family determines how many people can play the same game simultaneously: one copy supports one player at a time, while multiple copies can support the same number of concurrent players. Some games cannot be shared
Sharing eligibility is not universal. Developers can opt out, and some games are excluded for technical reasons—for example, when a title requires a third-party key, account, or subscription. Valve says developers control eligibility and that existing eligibility settings carried over from the earlier sharing system. Check the game’s current Steam listing or family-sharing status rather than assuming every library title is available to the family. (Valve’s Steam Families FAQ)
Parental controls for child accounts
Steam Families separates adult and child roles. Adults can tailor a child’s access to games and Steam features, and children cannot manage the family or change the controls placed on their accounts. Valve says family controls can be managed through Steam, including on mobile. (Valve’s launch announcement)
- Game access: Allow access to appropriate games.
- Steam features: Restrict the Store, Community, or Friends Chat.
- Playtime: Set hourly or daily limits.
- Oversight: View reports and approve or deny requests for extra playtime or access to features.
- Account recovery: Recover a child’s account.
Children can ask an adult to pay for a cart
A child can request that an adult in the family pay for the child’s Steam shopping cart. Valve says the adult can review and pay through mobile or email; once approved, the games are added to the child’s account. (Valve’s launch announcement)

Valve’s 2024 launch post says the creator can invite up to five other members. Its beta FAQ describes Steam Families as intended for a household of up to six close family members. The FAQ also sets out membership cooldowns: an adult who leaves must wait one year after joining the previous family before creating or joining another, and a vacated slot has a one-year cooldown before another member can fill it. What to check before relying on a shared game
- Confirm the title is eligible; developer opt-outs and technical requirements can prevent sharing.
- Count copies within the family if two or more people expect to play the same title at once.
- For a child account, decide which games and Steam areas should be available, whether to set a playtime limit, and whether requests should require adult approval.
