Mystery Boxes start appearing after you see Mr. Qi’s unlock cutscene. After that, look for them in fishing treasure chests, while panning or chopping trees, from monsters and breakable containers, and through several event and quest rewards. Take regular Mystery Boxes to Clint at the Blacksmith to open them for 25g.

When Mystery Boxes unlock

The player-facing signal is Mr. Qi’s cutscene. The Stardew Valley Wiki’s Mystery Box page describes the trigger as spending 50 days in the valley or collecting the second Prize Ticket from the billboard. Its Random Events page instead gives Summer 22, Year 1, or collecting the second ticket. Since those pages phrase the calendar condition differently, use the cutscene to confirm the feature has unlocked rather than relying on one calendar formulation.

Repeatable ways to find regular Mystery Boxes

Once unlocked, boxes can be found through ordinary activities around the valley and in several dungeons. These are chances, not guaranteed drops.

  • Fishing: Check treasure chests caught while fishing. The wiki lists a 9–17% box chance from regular chests and 12–21% from golden chests, varying with daily luck.
  • Panning: A panning attempt has a listed 5% chance.
  • Shaking trees: Shaking a tree that has seeds has a listed 3% chance.
  • Chopping trees: Each axe hit has a listed 0.5% chance.
  • Winter train cars: Present train cars during Winter have a listed 2% chance.
  • Combat and containers: Monsters can drop boxes, and breakable containers in the Mines, Skull Cavern, and Volcano Dungeon can contain them. The monster and container chances are affected by daily luck; monster drops can also be affected by luck buffs.

These percentages are in-game spawn-check chances reported by the Stardew Valley Wiki, not a promise that each activity will produce a box. The page also notes that daily luck, luck buffs, Foraging Mastery, or the Book of Mysteries can affect chances for some activities.

Other, conditional sources

Several additional routes depend on progression, a particular event, or a special condition. The Wiki’s Mystery Box page and Prize Ticket page list these possibilities:

  • Buy boxes at the Desert Festival, or earn them as Trout Derby and SquidFest rewards.
  • Trade with the Bookseller, find one in an artifact spot, or receive a Prize Ticket reward of three Mystery Boxes.
  • Open Skull Cavern treasure chests when the stated mastery conditions are met.
  • Receive boxes through other Mystery Boxes, later Raccoon requests, a remixed Winter Star Bundle, or the Mayor’s prize machine.
  • Meet the giant Qi Fruit condition or exchange at the Winter Star table.

These are not universally available sources: check the relevant event, quest, bundle, mastery, and date conditions before planning around one.

How to open a Mystery Box

  1. Take the box to the Blacksmith shop.
  2. Ask Clint to open it. The fee is 25g per box, similar to opening a geode.

A Geode Crusher cannot open Mystery Boxes. See the Wiki’s opening information for details.

Golden Mystery Boxes

Golden Mystery Boxes are a separate type. They unlock after you claim Foraging Mastery and see Mr. Qi’s notification cutscene. They can come from several of the same activities as regular boxes; the Wiki also lists a Skull Cavern treasure-chest route with mastery conditions. At the Giant Stump, trade three regular Mystery Boxes for one Golden Mystery Box. Details are on the Golden Mystery Box page.

What rewards to expect

Both box types draw from a random reward pool, and the displayed probabilities depend on progression and prior openings. For example, the Wiki lists a 0.4% chance of a Prismatic Shard under its stated assumptions. Some late-pool rewards become available only after more than ten Mystery Boxes and/or Golden Mystery Boxes have been opened; receiving the Book of Mysteries also changes the reward assumptions shown. Treat rare rewards as possible outcomes, not guaranteed results. See the Wiki’s reward table and conditions.

Version notes

The Wiki’s version history records that version 1.6.4 added Mystery Box trades at the Raccoon shop, slightly reduced finding chances, made reward order random per player rather than per save, and gave Golden Mystery Boxes a small chance to contain an Auto-Petter. The cited pages are community references, not developer documentation; platform parity and changes after the recorded 1.6.4 notes are not established here.
