Steam Families lets you play eligible games owned by other family members, but it does not make those games yours. A shared copy also supports only one player at a time. Buying your own copy adds it to your collection and provides another copy the family can use. Steam Families is the current system that replaced the old Steam Family Sharing and Family View features.
What sharing gives you—and what buying gives you
With Steam Families, an eligible game in a member’s library can be available to other members. The purchaser keeps ownership; a game you buy appears in your own collection. Think of sharing as access tied to family membership and the game’s eligibility, not a transfer or a permanent entitlement. Steam’s Steam Families User Guide & FAQ explains the current rules.

How many people can use one copy at once?
One copy of a game supplies one simultaneous player, not one player per family member. Steam’s example is Portal 2: if two family members want to play it at the same time, the family needs another copy. If multiple members own the game, Steam lets a player choose which copy to use; if one is occupied, another available copy may be selected. If every family copy is in use, wait for one to become available or buy another.
Check whether a game can be shared
Eligibility is determined title by title, and publishers can opt out. Steam lists several reasons a game or add-on may not be shareable:

Before relying on family access, check the specific game’s current sharing status and any account, subscription, region, operating-system, publisher, or privacy restriction. Eligibility can change. See Steam’s current Steam Families FAQ for its eligibility rules.
What carries over: saves, achievements, DLC, and offline play
Saves and achievements
Achievements belong to the individual player’s Steam account. Saves are handled differently by different games, so do not assume progress will transfer between accounts. Steam also notes that saves may not work across versions of a game with different DLC.

DLC
A family member can access another member’s DLC only when the publisher marks that DLC shareable. If members use different DLC sets, a save may not work as expected between those versions.
Offline play
A family-library game can be played offline only if that game supports Family Sharing. Steam does not promise offline access for every shared title.

Who can join a Steam Family?
Steam describes Steam Families as intended for up to six close family members in one household. Participation requirements may change as Steam monitors use. The membership limits are worth checking before organizing a library around sharing.
- Adults who leave generally must wait one year from joining their previous family before creating or joining a different one.
- Steam says a person may rejoin their last family without waiting if it has fewer than six members.
- A family slot also has a cooldown after a member leaves.

When buying a separate copy makes sense
Buy another copy if two family members need to play the same title simultaneously, or if you want that game in your own collection rather than relying on family access. A second copy does not guarantee that every restriction disappears: regional, operating-system, publisher, account, or subscription requirements may still apply.

Do not share account credentials
Steam advises users not to share accounts or passwords. Use Steam Families for eligible library sharing rather than giving someone your login as a workaround. See Steam’s account-security guidance.
