If Steam Family Sharing is not working, start by identifying the symptom: trouble joining a family, a game missing from your Library, or a visible game that is locked. Steam’s current system is called Steam Families; it replaces the older Family Sharing and Family View features. The checks below follow Steam’s documented causes and are not guaranteed repairs.
Choose the check that matches the problem
| What you see | Start with |
|---|---|
| You cannot join a Steam Family | Checks 2 and 3: confirm family status and review the join message for eligibility or cooldown information. |
| You joined, but a particular game is unavailable | Checks 4 and 5: verify that the game is shareable and that another member is not using the available copy. |
| A family game is missing from your Library | Checks 1, 6 and 7: confirm the account, Library organization and filters, and purchase state where relevant. |
| Only offline play fails | Check 8: offline play depends on the individual game supporting Family Sharing. |
9 checks for Steam Family Sharing problems
1. Make sure you are using the right Steam account
Confirm that the Steam client is signed in to the account that joined the family. If you are looking for a game you bought, check that you are on the account that owns it. Steam specifically advises users with missing Library titles to consider whether they have multiple accounts; see Steam’s missing-games guidance.

2. Confirm your Steam Families membership
Steam Families is the current system, replacing the older Steam Family Sharing and Family View features. Open Account Details and look for Family Management, or use the corresponding family-management flow in the Steam client, mobile app, or web browser. Check that the intended family appears and that your account is listed with the expected role and status. A family can have up to six members, according to Steam’s Families FAQ.

3. If joining fails, read the message instead of retrying blindly
Steam documents household eligibility and cooldowns as reasons a join attempt can fail. A cooldown may apply to the adult account or to the family slot being filled; Steam displays the remaining wait during the attempt. Follow that message rather than trying to bypass the restriction.

Steam’s FAQ states that an adult who leaves a family generally must wait one year before creating or joining a different family. The adult may rejoin their last family without waiting if it has fewer than six members. A vacated slot also has a one-year cooldown before a new member can take it. Steam separately says an adult must wait 30 days after a child joins before using the child-account recovery option. These are the time limits stated by Steam; its reviewed FAQ does not state a publication date.
4. Check whether the specific game or DLC is eligible for sharing
Sharing eligibility is not universal. Steam lists exclusions that include games requiring a third-party key, account, or subscription; free-to-play games and their purchased DLC; regional restrictions; operating-system incompatibility; and publisher opt-outs. Check the game in question rather than assuming that a family-wide problem exists because one title is unavailable.

Steam’s own diagnostic guidance says that an issue with a specific game or DLC is likely to mean that it is unavailable for sharing for one of the reasons in its FAQ. That is a useful starting point, not proof of the cause in every case.

If a game is visible but locked, look in the Steam client for the indication of which family member is playing it. The available copy cannot be used by another member at the same time. If the family owns multiple copies, another copy may be available, subject to the game’s and DLC’s compatibility.

6. Check Library grouping, filters, and Hidden Games
Family games appear in the Library. Use “Group By Library” to separate family titles from games in your own collection. If a title still does not appear, check the selected Library filters and open View > Hidden Games; remove it from Hidden if appropriate. Steam’s missing-games guidance also recommends checking the account and filters.
7. If a purchase is missing, verify it and sign in again
This check applies to a game you recently purchased, not as a general fix for Family Sharing. Review your Steam purchase history or receipt to confirm the purchase completed. If it did, Steam advises logging out and back in when the game still does not appear in the Library.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
8. Check operating-system compatibility and offline support
Steam lists operating-system incompatibility among the reasons a title may not be shareable. Offline access is also game-dependent: Steam says offline play is possible only for games that support Family Sharing. A title working online does not establish that it will work offline.
