Choose Steam Deck controls if you want a handheld PC with built-in controls, including two trackpads and four assignable rear buttons. Choose Steam Frame Controllers if you want split controllers for tracked VR play that also provide familiar gamepad inputs for non-VR Steam games. They serve different play contexts; Valve’s published descriptions do not establish which is more comfortable or performs better in PC games.
How the two control setups differ
| Feature | Steam Frame Controllers | Steam Deck controls |
|---|---|---|
| Physical arrangement | Split controllers used with the Steam Frame headset. Valve’s Steam Frame page describes them as a split gamepad layout. | Controls integrated into a handheld PC, alongside its screen. Valve’s Steam Deck hardware page documents the handheld control layout. |
| Conventional gamepad inputs | For non-VR play, Valve lists a D-pad, ABXY buttons, thumbsticks, triggers and bumpers. | Valve lists a D-pad, ABXY buttons, analog triggers and thumbsticks. |
| Trackpads and additional inputs | Valve’s cited controller summary describes capacitive finger tracking and spatial tracking for VR, but does not list trackpads. That summary alone does not establish whether the full specification includes them. | Valve documents two square haptic trackpads and four user-assignable rear buttons, labeled L4, L5, R4 and R5. See the Steam Deck technical specifications. |
| Device and power context | Each controller uses one AA battery. Valve estimates approximately 40 hours of play per controller; this is a manufacturer estimate, not an independent test. | The controls are part of a handheld computer with an integrated screen and rechargeable battery. Battery life varies by use, so it is not directly comparable to Valve’s controller-only estimate. |
| Documented play context | Tracked VR interaction and non-VR Steam games in the Steam Frame setup. | Handheld PC gaming, with trackpads offering input beyond a conventional gamepad layout. |
When Steam Frame Controllers make sense
Frame’s defining distinction is its split, tracked design. Valve says the controllers support the SteamVR catalog and use capacitive finger tracking for VR; it also lists familiar gamepad controls for non-VR play. Valve describes them as designed to work with the Steam library on its Steam Frame product page.
That makes Frame the more context-specific choice for someone considering a headset setup that can handle both tracked VR interaction and non-VR Steam games. Valve also says Steam Frame can pair with the Steam Controller and stream from a PC, laptop or Steam Deck. This is ecosystem context, not evidence that the Frame Controllers share the Steam Deck’s physical layout or that every game behaves identically on both.
When Steam Deck controls make sense
The Deck keeps the controls and handheld PC together. Alongside conventional gamepad inputs, Valve documents two trackpads and four assignable rear buttons. Those extra input options matter if you want trackpad control or configurable rear inputs available on the handheld itself; they are not features to assume on Frame controllers based on Valve’s short summary.

Valve describes the Deck as built for extended play using either thumbsticks or trackpads. That is the manufacturer’s design description, not a comparative comfort finding against Steam Frame Controllers. The Deck’s layout is the straightforward fit when the priority is playing on an integrated handheld rather than using a split controller pair in a headset context.
What to consider for PC games
- Need a handheld? The Steam Deck is the integrated handheld PC option in this comparison.
- Need VR tracking? Valve explicitly describes spatial tracking and capacitive finger tracking for Steam Frame Controllers.
- Need trackpads? Valve’s Deck specifications list two. The cited Frame controller description does not list them, which is not enough to make an absolute claim that Frame lacks them.
- Need familiar gamepad inputs for non-VR games? Valve lists those inputs for both setups, though the physical arrangement and device context differ.
Valve’s Steam Controller page discusses Steam Input configuration and says the Steam Controller has input parity with Steam Deck. That statement is about the Steam Controller; it should not be extended to Frame Controllers as a claim of identical mappings or compatibility. The actual control experience depends on the game and device. Valve’s Steam hardware page places Steam Deck and Steam Frame within its SteamOS hardware ecosystem, but ecosystem membership does not establish identical game behavior.

- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
What Valve’s specifications do not settle
The cited Valve product pages establish feature descriptions and intended use, not a head-to-head result. They do not provide a controlled comfort comparison, measured latency for these two control experiences, or a comparative compatibility rate across PC games. There is therefore no evidence-based universal winner for performance or comfort.
