Yes—but with an important qualification: Steam on ARM64 Linux is now a real public test target, not a universal Steam Deck substitute. Canonical’s Steam Snap gives Ubuntu ARM64 users the simplest route, while Valve’s Proton and FEX work is building a more native ARM64 path. The software has arrived faster than the hardware and game compatibility matrix.

Short answer: yes, Steam on ARM64 Linux has moved beyond a purely experimental community project. You can test it now, most straightforwardly with Canonical’s Steam Snap on a supported Ubuntu ARM64 system. But “runs better” does not mean that every Steam game now works, or that any ARM board is a Steam Deck replacement. The software stack is becoming real; the hardware support and game compatibility matrix are still uneven.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The current milestone is a public test phase. Valve’s Proton 11.0-beta1, released on April 16, 2026, added FEX-2604 for ARM64EC builds, while the Proton repository now includes ARM64 build tooling and an ARM64 tool manifest. Canonical then promoted its ARM64 Steam Snap to the stable channel on June 2, 2026, following testing on NVIDIA DGX Spark/GB10 systems, Qualcomm Snapdragon laptops, and Radxa Orion O6/O6N devices. What is actually running on ARM64?

ARM64 Steam is not one monolithic compatibility layer. It is a stack in which different parts may be native ARM64 code or translated x86 code:

Layer What it does
Ubuntu ARM64 and the device drivers Provide the Linux kernel, firmware, Vulkan or OpenGL implementation, display server, audio stack, and controller support.
Steam client and runtime Canonical’s package initially used the regular x86-oriented Steam client, with FEX allowing it to run on an ARM64 host. Valve is also working on a separate ARM64 client/runtime path.
FEX Translates 32-bit and 64-bit x86 instructions into ARM64 instructions. It also caches translated code and can forward graphics calls to native host OpenGL or Vulkan libraries where possible.
Proton Provides the Windows compatibility layer for Windows games. Proton itself is gaining ARM64 build components, but the exact client/runtime arrangement matters.
The game May be a native Linux build, an x86 Linux build, or a Windows game running through Proton. Each has a different risk profile.

That distinction matters because FEX does not simply “emulate the entire PC.” It translates x86 CPU instructions, while graphics work can be passed to native ARM64 libraries when the surrounding driver stack supports it. Code caching can reduce repeated translation overhead and first-run stutter, but it cannot compensate for a weak CPU, an immature GPU driver, insufficient memory, a problematic game engine, or incompatible anti-cheat software. Valve’s Steamworks documentation describes this architecture directly for Steam Frame. [c003]

Valve’s Steam Frame is the reference design

The clearest official example of this architecture is Valve’s Steam Frame. Valve describes Steam Frame as an ARM64 Linux device based on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. Its software stack uses Proton for Windows games, Lepton for Android games, and FEX for x86 applications. [c003]

Steam Frame is useful as a reference even when you are testing a different computer. It demonstrates the intended layering: ARM64 Linux underneath, translation for x86 software, a Windows compatibility layer for games, and native graphics libraries wherever the host can provide them. It does not prove that the same result will work on every Snapdragon laptop, Raspberry Pi, or ARM single-board computer.

Two different ARM64 Steam paths

1. Canonical’s Steam Snap: the practical public test

Canonical’s Steam Snap is currently the easiest route for most testers. It packages the x86 Steam client together with FEX so that the client can run on Ubuntu ARM64. The package was first tested through development channels and was promoted to stable on June 2, 2026. The edge channel remains the place for newer, less-tested changes and hardware-specific fixes. [c004] [c005]

This is an important ownership distinction: the stable package is Canonical’s ARM64 enablement project, not a declaration that Valve officially supports every ARM64 Linux computer. It builds on Valve’s Proton and FEX work, but a stable Snap channel is not the same thing as universal Valve hardware support. [c004] [c005]

2. Valve’s ARM64 Proton beta path: more significant, more technical

For advanced testers, Proton 11 beta is the more consequential development. It contains ARM64-related build components and FEX-2604, and the Proton project now provides ARM64 build tooling. However, Valve’s documentation makes a subtle but crucial point: ARM64 Proton builds must be built for an ARM64 machine; they cannot simply be dropped into an x86 Steam client that itself is running through FEX. [c002]

In other words, a native ARM64 Steam client/runtime path and an x86 Steam client translated by FEX are technically different configurations. Do not assume that selecting a Proton beta in the ordinary x86 client automatically gives you the complete native ARM64 stack.

A public April 2026 demonstration showed Steam’s ARM64 beta and Proton ARM components running on a Linux Nintendo Switch installation. That is useful evidence that the components can run on alternative ARM hardware, but it is not a compatibility guarantee for every Switch installation, graphics driver, controller configuration, or Steam game. [c006]

Which ARM64 devices make sense for testing?

Hardware category What the evidence supports Best use Main caution
Snapdragon Linux laptops Canonical has focused on Qualcomm Snapdragon laptops and documented a Snapdragon X client-launch fix in the edge channel in February 2026. Examples in its testing include Lenovo ThinkPad X13s and T14s systems and the Dell XPS 9345. [c004] [c005] The most practical stronger ARM64 laptop test platform. Linux firmware, device-tree support, graphics drivers, suspend, audio, and model-specific hardware support still vary.
NVIDIA DGX Spark and related GB10 systems Canonical reported promising early results on DGX Spark. NVIDIA describes the GB10 platform as a 20-core ARM CPU system with an integrated Blackwell GPU. [c004] [c005] [c007] High-performance development and compatibility testing. It is an advanced workstation-class route, not the sensible default for someone who simply wants to play their Steam library.
Radxa Orion O6/O6N Canonical lists these boards among its focused Steam Snap enablement platforms and has reported progress on hardware acceleration. [c004] [c005] Advanced ARM single-board-computer experimentation. Do not assume a fixed frame-rate profile; exact results depend on the model, driver, memory, cooling, and game.
Raspberry Pi 5 Canonical reports that some light legacy OpenGL games can work through the edge Steam Snap with suitable drivers and conservative settings. Raspberry Pi 5 uses a 2.4 GHz quad-core Cortex-A76 CPU, VideoCore VII graphics, OpenGL ES 3.1, and Vulkan 1.2. [c005] [c008] The most accessible low-cost ARM64 experiment. A Raspberry Pi 5 makes sense if the goal is learning and testing. It is not a serious modern AAA gaming recommendation. Expect driver limitations, low settings, and a small set of realistic games.
Apple Silicon with Asahi Linux Canonical’s testing notes say the Steam Snap did not run on Apple Silicon Macs under Asahi Linux because of the platform’s 16 KiB page-size requirement. [c005] Not currently a recommended route for this Steam Snap test. The limitation is specific and concrete; changing Steam channels should not be expected to solve it.
Linux Nintendo Switch installations An April 2026 demonstration showed ARM64 Steam and Proton components running on a Switch Linux installation. [c006] Experimental handheld and alternative-hardware research. A demonstration is not a supported product matrix or a promise that games and peripherals will work.

Choosing between the options

For a laptop-based experiment, a carefully selected Snapdragon X Elite laptop is the most compelling category to investigate, but do not buy a random model on the assumption that its Windows ARM support translates into Linux gaming support. Verify the exact model’s Linux firmware, graphics, suspend, audio, and device-tree status first. Canonical’s Snapdragon testing and edge-channel launch fix are encouraging, not a blanket certification. [c004] [c005]

For a high-end technical test environment, DGX Spark or another GB10 system has a much stronger graphics platform than a Raspberry Pi 5, but its results should still be treated as platform-specific. For a low-cost learning project, the Raspberry Pi 5 is more approachable. For an enthusiast who wants a Canonical-listed alternative board, the Radxa Orion O6 or Radxa Orion O6N is a legitimate path, provided you are comfortable solving board-level driver and firmware issues. How to test Steam on Ubuntu ARM64

The following is a cautious validation path, not a guarantee that the Snap will install on every ARM64 distribution or every ARM board. Ubuntu ARM64 with working graphics drivers is the intended starting point.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 1: Confirm that the host is really ARM64

Open a terminal and check the architecture:

uname -m
dpkg --print-architecture

A typical result is aarch64 from uname and arm64 from dpkg. Also confirm that the system has a functioning desktop session and that its GPU drivers expose the graphics API you intend to use. A Steam window opening is not enough; the game will still depend on Vulkan or OpenGL, display-server behavior, audio, and input support.

Step 2: Update Ubuntu and make sure Snap is available

sudo apt update
sudo apt full-upgrade

Ubuntu normally includes Snap support. If snap is not installed on your image, install the distribution’s snapd package using the normal Ubuntu package instructions before continuing:

sudo apt install snapd

Reboot if your image or package update requests it, particularly after a kernel or graphics-driver change.

Step 3: Install Canonical’s stable Steam Snap

sudo snap install steam --channel=stable

Launch it with:

steam

The stable channel is the sensible first test because it represents Canonical’s tested public route. If Snap reports that the package or channel is unavailable, do not interpret that as proof that Steam cannot run on ARM64; it may indicate that the particular Ubuntu image, architecture, or device is outside the package’s supported scope.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 4: Use edge only for a specific reason

Canonical’s edge channel contains newer changes and hardware fixes, but it should be treated as experimental. To install it on a fresh system:

sudo snap install steam --channel=edge

To move an existing installation from stable to edge:

sudo snap refresh steam --channel=edge

Use edge when Canonical’s testing notes identify a fix relevant to your hardware—for example, the Snapdragon X launch work—or when you are deliberately testing newer FEX behavior. If the stable build works, changing channels merely to obtain a newer version can make troubleshooting harder.

Step 5: Start with a controlled game test

  1. Begin with a lightweight Linux game or an older, less demanding OpenGL title. On Raspberry Pi 5, this is the realistic starting point; modern AAA games are not an appropriate first test.
  2. Then try a Windows game with a mature Proton track record and no known kernel-level anti-cheat requirement.
  3. Use ProtonDB for game-specific reports and launch options, but treat its entries as community guidance rather than a Valve guarantee.
  4. Keep resolution and graphical settings conservative while establishing that the game can launch, render, produce audio, accept input, and save correctly.
  5. Change one variable at a time. Record whether you changed the Steam channel, Proton version, graphics API, display session, or per-game launch option.

Do not classify a game as working merely because its window appears. A useful result means that it reaches gameplay, renders consistently, produces usable audio, accepts keyboard/controller input, and survives at least a short repeatable session.

What games are realistic first tests?

The most promising first targets share several characteristics:

  • They are lightweight or older rather than modern, CPU- and GPU-intensive releases.
  • They use standard graphics paths with good Linux or Proton history.
  • They do not depend on a fragile third-party launcher, unusual video codec path, or kernel-level anti-cheat driver.
  • They have community reports that identify a known Proton version or workaround.

Native Linux does not automatically mean native ARM64. A game may have a Linux build that was compiled only for x86-64, in which case FEX may still be involved. Conversely, a game can launch successfully through Proton but fail later because of its launcher, anti-cheat, video playback, controller handling, or a particular graphics effect.

Demanding games can be useful as benchmarks on powerful hardware, but benchmark results must stay tied to the tested machine. Canonical reported a roughly 45 FPS improvement in a Cyberpunk 2077 benchmark after applying a per-game CPU-affinity setting on DGX Spark. That is an interesting platform-specific observation, not evidence that Cyberpunk will gain the same amount on a Snapdragon laptop, Radxa board, or Raspberry Pi. [c004]

What “better” means—and what it does not

The improvement over older improvised ARM setups comes from a more coherent software path:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • ARM64 build tooling is now present in the Proton project rather than being entirely external to it.
  • FEX can translate both 32-bit and 64-bit x86 instructions.
  • Translated code can be cached, reducing repeated translation work.
  • Graphics calls may be forwarded to native ARM64 OpenGL or Vulkan libraries.
  • Canonical provides a packaged Steam route instead of requiring every user to assemble the x86 client and translation environment manually.

None of those improvements makes ARM faster by definition. A powerful ARM system with mature drivers can outperform a weak x86 system, while a modest ARM board can struggle with a game that would run comfortably on an older x86 laptop. Performance depends on CPU throughput, GPU architecture, driver quality, Vulkan/OpenGL support, memory capacity and bandwidth, cooling, game-engine behavior, shader compilation, and compatibility-layer overhead. [c003] [c004] [c005]

Common failure modes

Symptom Likely explanation What to check next
Steam does not launch The device or Ubuntu image may not be supported, the package may not expose the required architecture, or a platform-specific issue may be present. Confirm aarch64/arm64, update Ubuntu, check the stable and relevant edge-channel notes, and verify that the system is not Apple Silicon under Asahi’s 16 KiB page-size configuration.
Steam launches but a game does nothing Steam-client success does not establish Proton, launcher, DRM, or anti-cheat compatibility. Check the game’s ProtonDB reports, try an appropriate Proton version, and separate launcher or anti-cheat failure from graphics failure.
Black screen or very low frame rate Missing or immature Vulkan/OpenGL support, incorrect graphics-library forwarding, an unsuitable driver, or hardware limits. Test a simpler OpenGL title, confirm the GPU driver, compare Vulkan and OpenGL where the game supports both, and lower resolution and settings.
Stutter during the first minutes FEX translation and shader caches may be building; the effect can also reflect CPU or driver limits. Repeat the same test after caches have been created, while recording whether the stutter persists rather than assuming FEX has eliminated it.
Choppy audio Canonical documents audio choppiness on resource-intensive games as a known issue. Test a lighter title, check the audio device and desktop session, and compare after reducing game load. Do not treat a silent or distorted launch as a successful result. [c005]
Counter-Strike 2 has a broken viewport under Wayland Canonical documents a Wayland-specific viewport issue. Check the current Canonical issue notes and, where your Ubuntu installation offers it, use an X11 session as a diagnostic comparison. This is not a universal fix for every CS2 problem. [c005]
Raspberry Pi games fail despite Steam working Pi graphics drivers and the board’s performance envelope are limiting factors. Use the relevant driver stack, test light legacy OpenGL games, and avoid generalizing a successful menu launch to modern 3D games. [c005]
A DGX Spark result differs from published testing CPU affinity, game version, driver, resolution, and workload can materially change the result. Follow Canonical’s documented per-game CPU-affinity workaround when applicable and report the complete test configuration. Do not apply its Cyberpunk result to other hardware. [c004] [c005]
Video, controllers, or a third-party launcher fail These are separate compatibility layers from Steam’s basic client startup. Test each function independently and record it separately in your results.

How to report a useful ARM64 Steam result

“It works” is not a sufficiently reproducible result for this ecosystem. Record:

  • Exact device and board model.
  • SoC, RAM, cooling configuration, and GPU.
  • Ubuntu release, kernel, desktop, and Wayland or X11 session.
  • GPU-driver version and whether Vulkan or OpenGL was used.
  • Steam Snap channel: stable, candidate, or edge.
  • Proton version and any per-game launch option.
  • Game version, resolution, graphics settings, and frame-rate method.
  • Whether the game reached actual gameplay rather than only the launcher or menu.
  • Audio, video playback, controller, suspend/resume, and online behavior.
  • Whether graphics-library forwarding was enabled or otherwise changed.

This level of detail is especially important because ARM64 results are currently hardware-specific. A success on a GB10 workstation tells a Raspberry Pi owner very little about expected performance; a failure on Asahi Linux does not invalidate Canonical’s Snapdragon or Radxa work.

Should you switch to ARM64 for Steam gaming?

If your priority is playing the largest possible Steam library with minimal troubleshooting, an established x86-64 Linux gaming PC or handheld remains the safer choice. ARM64 is attractive when you specifically want a low-power laptop, an alternative single-board computer, a development platform, or a chance to test an emerging compatibility stack.

Choose Radxa Orion O6/O6N if you want a more advanced board project and are prepared for device-specific setup. Avoid Apple Silicon with Asahi Linux for this particular Steam Snap path until the documented page-size limitation changes. [c004] [c005] [c007] [c008]

The verdict

Steam games on ARM64 Linux are now genuinely testable in public. Proton’s ARM64 work, FEX improvements, Canonical’s stable Steam Snap, and Valve’s Steam Frame architecture show that the software stack has arrived. The remaining obstacles are practical: driver maturity, hardware variation, translated-code overhead, graphics support, anti-cheat, launchers, media playback, and the uneven game-by-game matrix.

That makes ARM64 Steam a promising public beta ecosystem—not a universal Steam gaming platform. Start with supported Ubuntu ARM64 hardware, use the stable Snap before edge, test lightweight games first, and document the whole stack when reporting results.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Steam startup validates only part of the stack. The game still depends on FEX or a native ARM64 build, Proton, graphics drivers, launchers, anti-cheat, audio, video playback, and controller support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Steam launching on ARM64 mean my games will work?

No. Canonical’s Steam Snap is a Canonical enablement project built on Valve’s Proton and FEX work. Its stable channel does not guarantee Valve support for every ARM64 Linux computer.

Is Canonical’s Steam Snap an official Valve ARM64 product?

It is best treated as a low-cost experiment. Canonical reports some light legacy OpenGL games working with the edge Steam Snap, suitable drivers, and conservative settings, but Raspberry Pi 5 is not a practical modern AAA gaming platform.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Raspberry Pi 5 good for modern Steam games?

Not automatically. Valve’s Proton documentation says ARM64 builds must be built for an ARM64 machine and cannot simply be used inside an x86 Steam client that is itself running through FEX. The native ARM64 client/runtime path and translated x86-client path are different arrangements.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: You can test Steam on ARM64 Linux now, especially through Canonical’s stable Steam Snap on supported Ubuntu hardware. Expect meaningful progress, not plug-and-play compatibility: the best results remain tied to the device, drivers, Steam path, Proton version, and individual game.
