A Stream Deck is a programmable control pad made by Elgato. Its customizable LCD keys—and, on some models, dials and other controls—can launch apps, send shortcuts, control compatible software, paste text, or run multi-step actions. It is best known for livestreaming but is also used for gaming, meetings, presentations, creative work, coding, and everyday productivity.

How a Stream Deck works
A physical Stream Deck connects to a Windows PC or Mac over USB and works through Elgato’s free Stream Deck application. The basic setup is:
#1 Best Overall
- Advanced Live Production: easily control your favorite tools and platforms.
- 32 Customizable LCD Keys: instantly trigger unlimited actions with a tap.
- Powerful Integrations: Elgato 4KCU, OBS, Twitch, YouTube, Twitter, Discord, Spotify, Philips Hue, vMix, VoiceMod, and more.
- One-Touch Operation: change scenes, launch media, switch cameras, tweak lighting, adjust audio, post tweets – anything.
- Visual Feedback: know that your command has been executed.
- Install the Stream Deck app.
- Connect the Stream Deck directly to the computer with USB.
- Choose a key in the app.
- Drag an action from the action panel onto that key.
- Customize its icon, label, behavior, and profile as needed.
The LCD keys can display labels, icons, animations, or changing status information. That visual feedback is one of the product’s main differences from an ordinary macro keypad: you can see what each button does before pressing it, and the displayed layout can change when you open a different application or profile.
What can a key do?
Depending on the selected action, a key can:
- Open an application, website, file, or folder.
- Send a keyboard shortcut or hotkey.
- Paste prepared text, such as an email response or stream command.
- Control supported software such as OBS Studio, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, PowerPoint, or Spotify.
- Trigger a soundboard effect.
- Run several commands in sequence with a Multi Action.
- Activate a plugin that connects to compatible software, services, lighting, MIDI equipment, or other hardware.
- Open a folder or move to another page of controls.
A key does not give the Stream Deck independent computing power. It sends configured commands to the connected computer or supported equipment, so the result depends on the operating system, application, plugin, permissions, and integration being used.
Profiles, pages, folders, and Multi Actions
The number of physical keys is only the starting point. Stream Deck software lets you organize controls into profiles, pages, and folders.

- Profiles: saved layouts associated with an application, game, or workflow. A streaming profile might contain scene and audio controls, while a video-editing profile might contain timeline and editing shortcuts.
- Pages: additional layouts that let one device expose more actions than fit on its first screen.
- Folders: groups of related actions, such as communication tools, editing commands, or game macros.
- Multi Actions: one key that performs several configured commands, potentially with delays between them.
This organization makes a smaller device more flexible, but there is a trade-off: actions hidden behind pages or folders are not as immediate as actions visible on the main key grid. Larger models reduce that compromise by providing more keys at once.
Profiles can be built from scratch or shared through Elgato Marketplace. Marketplace also offers plugins and icon assets. Plugin quality and availability can change, so a particular integration should be checked for the reader’s application, operating system, and current Stream Deck software version rather than assumed to be universal.
Rank #2
- 36 macro keys: Trigger commands and access tools with one press; customize your controls in the Stream Deck app, free for PC and Mac; trigger Multi Actions to automate entire sequences with one press
- Six multifunction dials: Make quick adjustments with more precision; turn a single dial into many functions with tools like Action Trigger for extra control; adjust settings and levels with precision
- Touch strip display: See important information at a quick glance; see your most important info in real time on an expanded touch strip; access additional pages of actions with a quick swipe of your finger
- Hundreds of integrations: Connect essential apps and equipment; integrate everything from DAWs and video switchers to creative apps; expand your connectivity with optional accessories like Network Dock
- Custom profiles: Create unique layouts for workflows and users; create custom profiles for workflows, projects, and team members; unlimited custom profiles for seamless page navigation
Custom icons
Each key can use a custom image. Supported image formats include PNG, JPEG, GIF, BMP, WEBP, and animated WEBP. Elgato recommends a minimum icon resolution of 72 by 72 pixels. Custom icons are useful when a profile contains many actions or when the default labels are not descriptive enough.
What do people use a Stream Deck for?
Livestreaming and video production
Streaming is the product’s best-known use. A creator can assign keys to switch scenes, start or stop recording, mute a microphone, play sound effects, control a camera, adjust compatible lighting, or launch production software. These controls generally rely on supported applications, plugins, or integrations.
A Stream Deck can make production changes easier during a live broadcast because the relevant commands are visible and grouped together. It does not replace a computer, camera, microphone, encoder, or streaming service.
Meetings and presentations
For meetings, keys can be assigned to actions such as muting the microphone, toggling the camera, sharing the screen, starting a recording, raising a hand, or sending a reaction when the relevant integration is available. Elgato documents integrations for applications including Zoom and Microsoft Teams.
Presenters can use a profile for PowerPoint or another presentation workflow, with controls for advancing slides, returning to previous slides, launching the presentation, or opening supporting material. Compatibility can depend on the installed app and the specific integration.
Rank #3
- 15 Customizable LCD Keys: instantly control your apps, tools and platforms.
- One-Touch Operation: trigger single or multiple actions, launch social posts, adjust audio, mute mic, turn on lights, and much more.
- Visual Feedback: know that your command has been executed.
- Powerful Plugins: Elgato 4KCU, OBS, Twitch, YouTube, Twitter, Discord, Spotify, Philips Hue, and many more.
- Hotkey Actions: streamline your film editing, music production, photography workflow, etc.
Gaming and communication
Players can use profiles to launch games, send hotkeys, trigger macros, operate voice-chat tools, control audio, and activate soundboard effects. Stream Deck is particularly useful when a game or communication workflow contains commands that are repeated often but are awkward to reach with a keyboard.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
It is not a universal game controller, and a macro will not automatically work in every game. Whether a command is practical depends on the game’s key bindings, anti-cheat rules, the software being controlled, and the configuration permitted by the game’s developer.
Creative and professional software
Profiles and plugins can put frequently used commands in front of users of video editors, photo tools, design applications, 3D software, coding environments, presentation tools, and network-monitoring utilities. The point is not to add new capabilities to the application; it is to provide a visible, dedicated route to commands the application already supports or that a plugin can invoke.
Stream Deck can also be used for MIDI control, IoT and smart-lighting workflows, robotics projects, and other specialized setups. Those uses require the appropriate compatible software, plugin, or hardware interface.
Everyday productivity
A productivity setup might include keys for opening a calendar, starting a meeting, launching a frequently used document, pasting standard text, switching an audio device, controlling music, changing a workspace, or running a sequence of routine commands.

- Tactile Control, Visual Feedback: LCD keys, touch strip, and dials for audio, video, lighting, and more. Know that your command has been executed.
- Fully Customizable: Use as an audio mixer, studio controller, production console, etc.
- Multi Actions, Smart Profiles: trigger multiple actions at once or sequentially, automatically switch between interface configurations for different apps.
- Powerful Plugins: Elgato Wave Link, Camera Hub, Control Center, OBS, Twitch, YouTube, Twitter, Discord, Spotify, Philips Hue, and many more
- Stream Deck App and Store: drag and drop setup, download plugins, icons, thousands of royalty-free tracks, SFX, and more. Regular updates and new plugins frequently added.
The benefit is convenience rather than faster hardware or automatic performance improvement. A Stream Deck is most worthwhile when the user repeats enough actions to justify the setup time, desk space, and purchase cost. Someone who rarely repeats commands or already works comfortably with keyboard shortcuts may gain little from one.
Physical Stream Deck versus Stream Deck Mobile
Stream Deck Mobile is the software version for iPhone, iPad, and Android. It connects to a Mac or PC and provides a virtual set of Stream Deck controls rather than a dedicated USB desktop pad.
Elgato says the free version includes six customizable keys. It supports plugins, folders, pages, profiles, and integrations including Zoom, Microsoft Teams, PowerPoint, OBS Studio, Twitch, Spotify, and supported smart-light platforms. A paid Pro tier can provide up to 64 keys and additional layout features.
| Choose a physical Stream Deck if you want | Choose Stream Deck Mobile if you want |
|---|---|
| Dedicated tactile controls that stay on your desk | A low-commitment way to try the concept |
| Keys available without using phone screen space | No additional desktop hardware |
| A permanent control surface for streaming, work, or meetings | A portable or software-based control layout |
Mobile is not simply a wireless version of a physical unit: it uses a phone or tablet screen, and the available layout depends on the app tier and device. The best choice depends on whether dedicated hardware and tactile access matter to the workflow.

The current standard Stream Deck listing specifies 15 keys, USB-C connectivity, Windows 11 or later, macOS 13 or later, and the free Stream Deck software. The current Stream Deck Neo listing also specifies Windows 11 or later and macOS 13 or later. Confirm those requirements for the exact model before purchase, particularly if the computer runs an older operating system.
A simple buying rule
- Start with the standard 15-key model if you want a balanced first physical Stream Deck.
- Choose the Neo if desk space and everyday shortcuts matter more than a large grid.
- Choose the XL if you need many visible actions at the same time.
- Choose a Stream Deck + model if turning dials or using touch controls is central to your workflow.
- Choose the Pedal for genuinely useful hands-free or foot-operated commands.
- Try Stream Deck Mobile before buying hardware if you are unsure whether a programmable control surface will help.
If you are comparing listings on Amazon, inspect the seller shown on the listing rather than assuming every Marketplace seller is authorized. Warranty and reseller details may differ outside the United States.
What a Stream Deck is not
- It is not a standalone computer. It normally sends commands to a connected computer or compatible system.
- It is not a video encoder or streaming service. It can control parts of a production setup, but it does not itself provide the complete broadcast pipeline.
- It is not a general-purpose display. Its LCD keys are designed to identify and control configured actions.
- It is not Valve’s Steam Deck. Steam Deck is a portable gaming handheld; Stream Deck is Elgato’s control-and-creation device.
- It is not automatically compatible with everything. Integration depends on the application, plugin, operating system, permissions, and version.
Advantages and limitations
Advantages
- Dedicated controls can reduce repeated menu navigation and shortcut memorization.
- LCD labels and icons make actions easier to identify than unlabeled macro keys.
- Profiles let one device adapt to different apps, games, and tasks.
- Pages, folders, and Multi Actions extend what a small number of keys can do.
- Plugins can provide direct control of supported software and hardware.
- Custom icons and layouts can be changed as a workflow evolves.
Limitations
- The device costs money and occupies dedicated desk space, while the Mobile app uses a phone or tablet.
- Initial configuration can take time, particularly for complex profiles and Multi Actions.
- It depends on the connected computer and Stream Deck software.
- Plugins may be unavailable, outdated, poorly maintained, or incompatible with a particular app version.
- Commands hidden inside pages and folders are less immediate than visible keys.
- It does not add computing power and should not be presented as a guaranteed productivity or performance upgrade.
Is a Stream Deck worth it?
A Stream Deck is worth considering when you can name several actions you perform repeatedly—for example, switching stream scenes, muting a meeting, opening the same project files, controlling audio, or running a dependable sequence of commands. The strongest case is a workflow where those actions are frequent, time-sensitive, or difficult to remember.
It is less compelling if you rarely repeat tasks, have limited desk space, or already use keyboard shortcuts efficiently. In that situation, test the workflow with Stream Deck Mobile or map a few keyboard shortcuts first. The product’s value comes from making configured actions more visible and convenient, not from making every task inherently faster.
Bottom line
A Stream Deck is a customizable shortcut and control pad: physical LCD keys, and on some models dials or other controls, connected to software that turns those controls into actions. Livestreaming is its most recognizable use, but meetings, gaming, presentations, creative work, coding, and everyday productivity can all be valid uses. Choose the model based on how many controls must remain visible, whether dials or foot controls matter, and whether you actually repeat enough tasks to benefit from a dedicated controller.
The Bottom Line
In short: Stream Deck is Elgato’s programmable control surface for launching and controlling repeated computer tasks. It is useful far beyond livestreaming, but it is not a standalone computer or universal controller. Try Stream Deck Mobile or start with the standard 15-key model if your workflow has enough recurring actions to justify it.
