For most buyers whose priority is smooth 1440p gaming, a conventional gaming PC is the better choice. The Steam Machine is a compelling alternative when a compact, quiet, controller-first SteamOS box under the television matters more than maximum frame rate, broad software compatibility, or component upgrades. In PC Gamer’s June 22, 2026 review, the Steam Machine averaged 45 frames per second (FPS) with 30 FPS 1% lows in Metro Exodus: Enhanced Edition at 1440p Ultra, and 28 FPS in Cyberpunk 2077 at 1440p Medium with ray tracing and Quality FSR. Those results show why “it outputs 1440p” should not be confused with “it sustains high native-1440p performance.”

The right comparison is not a single resolution label. Match the same game, preset, ray-tracing setting, upscaler and frame-generation mode, then compare average FPS, 1% lows, total system cost and the practical trade-offs of a living-room appliance versus an upgradeable computer.

What the Steam Machine is

Valve describes Steam Machine as a compact gaming device running SteamOS, built around a semi-custom AMD desktop-class processor and graphics processor. Valve positions it as PC gaming in a small form factor, with features such as fast suspend/resume and cloud saves, and says it is roughly six times more powerful than Steam Deck. That six-times statement is Valve’s relative device comparison, not a measured 1440p-performance claim. See Valve’s Steam Machine documentation for the platform description.

PC Gamer’s review lists a six-core, 12-thread AMD Zen 4 CPU, semi-custom RDNA 3 graphics, 16 GB of DDR5 system memory and 8 GB of dedicated GDDR6 graphics memory. The review table lists 512 GB and 2 TB storage versions. These are review-reported specifications; check Valve’s live product listing for any later revision, regional configuration or bundle change.

There is an important resolution distinction. Valve’s official feature and troubleshooting guide says 1080p is the Steam Machine’s default game resolution and the resolution used for Steam Machine Verified testing. A device can send a 1440p signal to a monitor or television while rendering a game at 1080p, using an upscaler, or struggling to render a native 2560×1440 image. Always identify the internal render resolution, not just the display output.

What 1440p performance actually looks like

PC Gamer’s hands-on results are the clearest published indication of how demanding 1440p can be on this hardware. They are named-game measurements from one review setup, not an all-games average, a guarantee for every unit or a universal comparison against every PC.

Game and test Resolution and settings Upscaling/frame generation Result reported by PC Gamer
Metro Exodus: Enhanced Edition 1440p Ultra Not stated in the cited result 45 FPS average; 30 FPS 1% low
Cyberpunk 2077 1440p Medium with ray tracing Quality FSR; frame generation off 28 FPS average

The first result is playable for some people but leaves limited headroom: a 30 FPS 1% low indicates that the slowest one-percent portion of frames was substantially below the 45 FPS average. The second result demonstrates how quickly a modern ray-traced workload can become difficult even after moving from Ultra to Medium and enabling Quality FSR. Neither number should be rewritten as “the Steam Machine gets 45 FPS at 1440p” in every game.

PC Gamer also found that performance could be acceptable in less demanding games and after changing settings or using upscaling. That variability is normal for a fixed, compact system: game engines, shader compilation, texture memory use, ray-tracing effects and CPU workload all change the result. Frame generation can increase the displayed counter while adding latency and image artifacts, so a generated-FPS figure must not be compared with native rendered frames as if they were equivalent.

Native 1440p, upscaled 1440p and 1080p output

  • Native 1440p: the game renders 2560×1440 internally. This gives the most direct image-quality comparison but imposes the highest workload.
  • Upscaled 1440p: the game renders below 1440p and reconstructs the image to 2560×1440 with a technology such as FSR. The output is 1440p, but performance and image quality depend on the internal resolution and mode.
  • 1080p output: the Steam Machine’s documented default game resolution. On a 1440p monitor or 4K television, the display scales the signal or the game uses its own scaling.
  • Frame generation: extra frames are synthesized between rendered frames. It can make motion appear smoother, but the underlying rendered-FPS level, input latency and artifact behavior still matter.

When you compare a Steam Machine with a PC, record all four conditions. “1440p, Ultra” is not a meaningful apples-to-apples label if one system is native, the other uses Quality FSR, and only one enables frame generation.

Steam Machine versus a gaming PC: value and cost

PC Gamer reported these US prices at review time in June 2026:

Steam Machine configuration Reported US price (June 2026) Controller included?
512 GB $1,049 No
512 GB bundle $1,128 Yes
2 TB $1,349 No
2 TB bundle $1,428 Yes

Those are historical US review-time figures, not a current worldwide price. Taxes, stock, warranty terms, regional pricing and bundle contents can change; verify them before buying. Storage capacity and the controller are part of the real cost. A 512 GB model may fill quickly when several modern games are installed, while choosing 2 TB adds a substantial premium.

A fair PC budget must include the graphics card, processor, memory, storage, case, power supply and operating-system needs, plus a controller or wireless living-room input if you want the same sofa experience. It should also account for the less tangible costs of a larger footprint, possible fan noise, cable management, setup time and maintenance. Conversely, a PC’s components can be selected independently and replaced later, which changes the value calculation over several years.

Edser’s PC Gamer review concluded that a regular gaming PC could deliver more performance for similar money, writing: “You can get much better performance for your money from a regular gaming PC hooked up to your telly box for similar cash.” That is the reviewer’s conclusion, not a universal benchmark covering every configuration. The same review compared the Steam Machine with a system using a GeForce RTX 5060 and reported materially higher performance in several specific scenarios; it did not establish that every RTX 5060 system wins every game or is always the best purchase.

When a conventional gaming PC is the better 1440p choice

You want higher or steadier frame rates

Choose the PC route when your target is a consistently high refresh rate, stronger 1% lows, or enough headroom for demanding games without dropping to Low settings. Select the graphics card from benchmarks of the games you actually play, and insist that those tests disclose whether they are native 1440p, upscaled, ray-traced and frame-generated.

You expect to upgrade

A conventional desktop normally lets you replace the graphics card, add storage or memory and change other components as needs grow. The Steam Machine’s compact, semi-custom design is attractive precisely because it is appliance-like, but that same design is not a substitute for the broad upgrade path of a standard desktop. Confirm the specific PC’s motherboard, power-supply capacity, case clearance and warranty before assuming an upgrade will fit.

You need Windows applications or unusual peripherals

A Windows gaming PC generally offers wider compatibility with productivity software, specialist utilities, launchers, peripherals and games that depend on Windows-specific services. It also brings Windows setup, updates, driver management and the maintenance responsibilities of a general-purpose computer. Decide whether that flexibility is worth the extra setup before treating it as a free advantage.

When Steam Machine is the better fit

Living-room simplicity comes first

The Steam Machine’s small enclosure, quiet operation and controller-oriented interface are meaningful advantages when you want a neat under-TV installation rather than a tower beside the desk. SteamOS integration, fast suspend/resume and cloud saves support a console-like routine. Those benefits can outweigh lower performance per dollar for a household that values “turn on and play” convenience.

Your library is primarily Steam games

Valve says a game that runs well on Steam Deck should also run well on Steam Machine without additional developer work. This is useful compatibility guidance, not a promise that every Steam title, anti-cheat system, launcher, peripheral or non-Steam application behaves identically. Check the exact games and services you consider essential before purchasing.

You accept tuned settings and upscaling

Steam Machine makes the most sense for players comfortable selecting a sensible preset, using an upscaler where appropriate and prioritizing consistent frame pacing over maximum visual settings. It is a poor fit if “1440p” means native resolution, Ultra settings, ray tracing and a high refresh rate in every new release.

SteamOS, compatibility and setup considerations

PC Gamer tested Steam Machine with SteamOS 3, the Linux-based operating system, and described some setup and software friction during its review. Treat that as the reviewer’s experience at publication time, not a permanent defect or a prediction that every owner will encounter the same issue. SteamOS can feel streamlined for a Steam library while requiring workarounds for certain launchers, anti-cheat implementations or non-Steam software.

A Windows PC is usually the safer choice for software breadth, but it is not maintenance-free: expect operating-system updates, graphics-driver updates, storage management and occasional troubleshooting. Before deciding, make a short compatibility list:

  • Every must-play game, including its anti-cheat system and launcher.
  • Any non-Steam game or subscription service you use.
  • Wireless headsets, keyboards, controllers and other peripherals.
  • Recording, modding, streaming or productivity applications.
  • Whether you need a desktop interface at the television or only a game launcher.

Choosing settings for a 1440p display

If you connect either system to a 1440p monitor, start by checking the game’s internal resolution and the display’s reported input signal. On a 4K television, including a 65-inch model, a 1440p signal may be scaled by the television; image sharpness depends on the panel’s scaler, viewing distance and the game’s reconstruction method. A larger screen does not make 1440p rendering faster, and a successful 1440p signal does not prove that the game is rendered natively at that resolution.

  1. Run the game at its documented baseline, recording resolution, preset, ray tracing, upscaler mode and frame-generation status.
  2. Measure average FPS and 1% lows in the same repeatable scene or built-in benchmark.
  3. If lows are unstable, lower ray tracing and the heaviest shadows or volumetric effects before lowering every texture setting.
  4. Use Quality or Balanced upscaling when native rendering is too slow, and inspect fine details for shimmer or ghosting.
  5. Set a frame-rate cap that the system can hold consistently rather than chasing a high average with severe dips.
  6. Repeat the test after changing one setting at a time so you know which compromise produced the improvement.

For a PC comparison, apply exactly the same procedure. A benchmark that omits one of these variables cannot establish which system is faster at 1440p.

A practical buying decision

Pick the PC if most answers are “yes”

  • You want higher or steadier 1440p performance than the cited Steam Machine results.
  • You play demanding ray-traced releases or want to use Ultra settings frequently.
  • You want to choose a specific graphics card and replace it later.
  • You use Windows-only software, launchers, mods or peripherals.
  • You are willing to manage a desktop, cables, drivers and upgrades.

Pick Steam Machine if most answers are “yes”

  • The device must fit discreetly under a television and operate quietly.
  • You mainly play a verified or known-compatible Steam library.
  • You prefer a controller-first interface, suspend/resume and SteamOS integration.
  • You accept 1080p or upscaled 1440p in demanding games.
  • You value appliance-like simplicity more than maximum performance per dollar.

Use a total-cost checklist before ordering

  1. Price the exact Steam Machine storage tier and controller bundle, or list every component in the proposed PC.
  2. Check current regional price, tax, stock, warranty and delivery terms rather than relying on June 2026 US review pricing.
  3. Compare benchmarks for your own games at identical settings and upscaling modes.
  4. Confirm the display’s preferred input resolution and refresh rate, especially when connecting to a 4K television.
  5. Verify must-play games, anti-cheat, launchers, peripherals and non-gaming software.
  6. Decide how much value you assign to a compact, quiet installation versus future upgrades.

The bottom line for 1440p buyers

A conventional gaming PC is the safer recommendation for a buyer specifically seeking the best 1440p performance per dollar. The available Steam Machine results show meaningful variation: 45 FPS average with 30 FPS 1% lows in Metro Exodus: Enhanced Edition at 1440p Ultra, and 28 FPS in ray-traced Cyberpunk 2077 at 1440p Medium with Quality FSR and no frame generation. Those figures can be acceptable with the right games and settings, but they do not support a blanket promise of high, native-1440p frame rates.

Choose Steam Machine when its compact under-TV design, quiet operation and SteamOS living-room experience are the product you actually want. Choose the PC when performance headroom, software flexibility and upgrades matter more. Whichever route you take, compare like-for-like tests and treat output resolution, internal rendering resolution and generated frames as separate measurements.
