Which Steam Machine Graphics Settings Matter Most for 1440p and 60 FPS?

For a demanding game that misses 1440p at 60 FPS on Steam Machine, disable ray tracing first, then use the game’s FSR upscaler and lower its most expensive quality settings. Test demanding scenes and frame-time consistency rather than trusting the headline FPS counter. A 1440p signal, native 1440p rendering, upscaled 1440p, and generated frames are different performance targets.

What Steam Machine Verified actually promises

Steam Machine Verified is not a certification for 1440p at 60 frames per second. Valve’s 2026 Steamworks presentation defines the target as 30 FPS at 1080p, and explicitly says the program does not test display resolution or legibility. A game can therefore meet Verified criteria without rendering at 1440p, without reaching 60 FPS, or without proving that its interface is comfortable to read on a particular television or monitor.

Valve has separately described a more ambitious performance goal. In a statement reported by PC Gamer, Valve said, “In our testing the majority of Steam titles play great at 4K 60 fps with FSR on Steam Machine.” The same statement says some titles need more upscaling and may be better at a lower frame rate with variable refresh rate (VRR) while retaining a 1080p internal resolution. Valve engineer Yazan Aldehayyat described the benchmark as having enough performance to play every Steam game at 4K60 with some form of upscaling such as FSR. Those are manufacturer testing statements and a benchmark goal, not an independent guarantee for every game, patch or graphics preset.

No published aggregate figure establishes what share of games can deliver native 1440p at 60 FPS on this hardware. Results vary with the game engine, scene, drivers, Proton version, patch and selected effects.

Why 1440p output is not the same as native 1440p

Output resolution

Output resolution is the signal sent to your display. Selecting 2560×1440 in a game or in the SteamOS display settings can make the television or monitor report a 1440p signal, but it does not prove that every pixel was rendered at that resolution.

Internal rendering resolution

An upscaler renders the game at a lower internal resolution, reconstructs detail and outputs the selected resolution. FSR Quality, Balanced and Performance modes use progressively lower internal resolutions in exchange for more speed and, usually, more visible reconstruction artifacts. The exact internal scale can vary by game implementation, so treat the mode name as a quality/performance choice rather than a universal pixel count.

Generated frames

Frame generation inserts additional frames between conventionally rendered frames. The display counter can approach 60 FPS while the game is actually producing substantially fewer base frames. Generated frames do not provide the same input response or motion clarity as 60 independently rendered frames, so always report base FPS separately.

  • Up to 180Hz: The 180Hz refresh rate speeds up the frames per second to deliver an ultra-smooth 2D motion scene. With a rapid refresh rate of up to 180Hz, Acer Gaming Monitors shorten the time it takes for frame rendering, lower input lag and provide gamers an excellent in-game experience.
  • Responsive!!: Up to 0.5ms GTG (Gray to Gray) response time enhanced gamers’ in-game experience. No matter the fast-moving action or any dramatic transitions will be all rendered smoothly without the annoying effects of smearing or ghosting with KG271U Gaming Monitor.
  • New Depths of Color Accuracy: is monitor is ideal for color-critical projects producing accurate colors, supporting DCI-P3 95%. An amazing monitor for graphic designers, photographers, and film editors.

Which settings should you change first?

1. Turn off ray tracing

Ray-traced reflections, lighting and shadows can consume a large share of the rendering budget in demanding games. Disable ray tracing before making broad reductions to texture or geometry quality. This is the clearest first move supported by the available testing: PC Gamer measured Cyberpunk 2077 at an average 28 FPS at 1440p Medium with ray tracing enabled, FSR Quality and no frame generation. GamersNexus measured 21 FPS in a 1080p Cyberpunk ray-tracing test; after a later tested patch, that specific result was 22.8 FPS. These are test-condition results, not a fixed penalty that applies to every title, but they show why ray tracing is a poor choice when 60 FPS is the priority.

2. Choose an upscaler mode

If the game offers FSR, enable it after choosing a sensible preset. Start with Quality at 1440p, then move to Balanced or Performance only if demanding scenes remain below your target. Check thin foliage, hair, wires, moving particles and distant signage for shimmering or ghosting after each change. A lower internal resolution can improve frame rate dramatically, but calling the result “1440p” without stating the FSR mode hides the most important part of the comparison.

3. Reduce the expensive effects

When ray tracing is already off and FSR is not enough, lower the options that affect every frame: volumetric fog or clouds, screen-space reflections, ambient occlusion, shadow quality, crowd density, vegetation distance and other lighting or post-processing effects. Games expose different controls and do not charge the same performance cost for each one, so there is no universal slider order. Change one group at a time and retain settings that improve image quality most for their cost.

  • USB Type-C hub supports video transmission in DisplayPort signal; can serve as a USB hub, meaning that you can connect your device to your wired peripherals with clutter-free set-up

4. Consider frame generation only after establishing a good base rate

Frame generation can make a game appear smoother when the base renderer is already reasonably responsive. It cannot repair poor input latency caused by a base rate near 30 FPS. PC Gamer reported 58–61 FPS average in Cyberpunk 2077 at 4K with Medium settings, ray tracing off, FSR Performance and 2× frame generation, while the underlying rate was around 30 FPS. The review also noted added latency and image artifacts. Treat that result as a reconstructed 60-ish display rate, not equivalent to native 60 FPS.

A practical tuning procedure for 1440p/60

  1. Set a repeatable starting point. Select 2560×1440 output, the game’s Medium preset, ray tracing off and frame generation off. Record the game version, SteamOS/Proton environment and FSR mode.
  2. Use a demanding scene. Test a busy city area, combat encounter, open-world traversal or the level that previously produced the worst hitching. A quiet corridor can overstate performance.
  3. Measure base performance. Record average FPS, the lowest behavior or frame-time consistency and how controls feel. Do not rely on a single peak number.
  4. Try FSR Quality. Compare image stability and responsiveness. If the result remains below 60 in the demanding scene, test Balanced, then Performance, stopping when artifacts outweigh the smoothness benefit.
  5. Lower one costly option at a time. Reduce volumetrics, reflections, shadows, ambient occlusion, crowd density or view distance, retesting after each change. Keep textures higher if the game has enough memory and they do not affect frame time in your test.
  6. Recheck ray tracing. Leave it disabled unless the title still meets your frame-time target with it enabled. Ray tracing should be treated as a visual preference that spends performance, not as a default feature of a 1440p/60 preset.
  7. Test frame generation last. Enable it only after the base rate feels responsive. Compare latency and artifacts in camera pans, fast combat and interface elements, not just the counter.
  8. Validate over a session. Check several minutes of play, shader-compilation moments and a second demanding area. Keep the configuration that delivers consistent frame times and acceptable image quality, even if its average is a little lower.

How the published tests should be interpreted

Source and test Configuration Reported result What it demonstrates
PC Gamer, Cyberpunk 2077 (2026) 1440p, Medium, ray tracing on, FSR Quality, no frame generation 28 FPS average Ray tracing and a demanding game can make 1440p/60 unrealistic even with Quality upscaling.
GamersNexus, Cyberpunk 2077 ray-tracing test (2026) 1080p ray-tracing test; later tested patch reported separately 21 FPS average; 22.8 FPS after that patch Ray tracing can be a major cost; the numbers belong to those exact test conditions.
PC Gamer, Cyberpunk 2077 (2026) 4K, Medium, ray tracing off, FSR Performance, 2× frame generation 58–61 FPS average; base rate around 30 FPS Displayed FPS can approach 60 while base rendering, latency and artifacts remain materially different.

These measurements come from independent reviews of one game and particular software versions. They are useful for understanding trade-offs, not for predicting every Steam title. When comparing your own configurations, keep the game version and scene constant and report output resolution, internal/upscaler mode, preset, ray-tracing state, base and displayed FPS, lows or frame-time behavior, frame-generation status and visible quality costs.

Frame pacing matters more than a single average

Two configurations can both show 60 FPS while feeling very different. A stable 16.7-millisecond frame time produces consistent motion; intermittent 40–60-millisecond spikes create hitching even when the average looks good. GamersNexus reports frame-time behavior and lows alongside averages in its testing, which is the more useful model for evaluating a living-room system.

Watch for traversal stutter, shader-compilation pauses, camera judder and sudden drops during combat. If VRR is available, a lower but stable frame rate can feel better than an unstable attempt at 60. Valve’s own qualification describes this trade-off: some games may be preferable at a lower frame rate with VRR while maintaining a 1080p internal resolution.

Common mistakes and their fixes

Assuming Verified means 1440p/60

Verified’s stated 30-FPS-at-1080p target is a compatibility baseline, not a high-refresh performance certification. Use the game’s own benchmark or a repeatable demanding scene to set expectations.

Calling upscaled output “native 1440p”

Write down both values: for example, “1440p output, FSR Balanced.” If the game exposes an internal-resolution percentage, record that too. This prevents misleading comparisons with native rendering.

Chasing the displayed frame counter

With frame generation enabled, inspect base FPS and input response. If base performance is around 30 FPS, a 60-ish counter does not remove the latency associated with that base rate.

Changing every option at once

A wholesale preset change hides which setting helped and may sacrifice image quality unnecessarily. Use one-variable changes in a demanding scene, then keep a short record of each result.

Testing only easy scenes

Open-world hubs, weather, crowds and combat often cost more than an interior hallway. Validate the configuration where the game is hardest to run.

Expecting a monitor to add performance

A 1440p monitor can display a 1440p signal, but changing the display does not increase Steam Machine’s rendering capability. Performance comes from the game’s internal resolution, effects and frame-generation choices.

A decision guide for common outcomes

  • Below 40 FPS with ray tracing on: disable ray tracing before touching other settings.
  • Near 50–60 FPS at 1440p with FSR Quality: keep Quality if image stability matters; lower a costly effect only when drops occur in demanding scenes.
  • Below target with ray tracing off and Quality upscaling: try FSR Balanced, then Performance, while checking foliage, reflections and text for artifacts.
  • Base rate around 30 FPS but a frame-generation counter near 60: decide based on latency and artifacts, and do not describe it as native 60 FPS.
  • Stable lower rate on a VRR display: consider keeping the higher internal resolution or image quality if the presentation feels smoother than an unstable 60-FPS attempt.

What to record when sharing a result

A useful Steam Machine performance report should state the title and patch, output resolution, internal resolution or FSR mode, preset, ray-tracing setting, frame-generation setting, average FPS, lows or frame-time behavior, and the scene used. Include whether VRR was active and note visible reconstruction artifacts or added latency. Without those details, “1440p/60” can describe several materially different experiences.

Bottom line for a 1440p target

Start with ray tracing off, then balance FSR mode and the game’s most expensive effects against image quality. Judge the result in the hardest scenes by base frame rate, frame-time consistency and control latency. Steam Machine can output 1440p and may reach high displayed rates with aggressive upscaling or frame generation, but neither Steam Machine Verified nor the cited tests establish a universal native 1440p/60 guarantee.
