1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesStart with the demo’s resolution or internal render scale, then lower demanding graphics options one at a time while retesting the same scene. Use an upscaler such as FSR only when that demo provides it. Treat V-Sync, frame caps, and frame generation as display and frame-pacing choices—not guaranteed FPS boosts—and use launch options only when the game’s own documentation supports them.
Why there is no single “Next Fest” performance preset
Steam Next Fest is a weeklong event for upcoming games with playable demos. Valve describes it as recurring three times a year, but Steam does not impose one graphics profile on those demos. Each demo is a separate game, built with its own engine, defaults, menu labels, and performance characteristics.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
That distinction matters. A setting that is expensive in one engine may have little effect in another, and an option shown in one developer’s announcement may not exist in the next demo you install. The reliable approach is therefore diagnostic: establish a repeatable scene, change one meaningful option, and keep the change only when it improves play without an unacceptable loss of image quality.

Prepare a fair test before changing anything
Record the current behavior
Play the same short section for each test: an area with the problem you noticed, such as a busy hub, combat encounter, or outdoor scene. Note whether the issue is low average FPS, uneven frame pacing, stutter when new assets appear, or image tearing. A setting that raises an FPS counter but does not make that section feel steadier has not solved the practical problem.
Check the game’s own recommended settings
Use the demo’s recommended preset as a starting reference rather than assuming it is a guarantee. Steam Support notes that configurations vary by developer. If a resolution problem remains after you try the available in-game choices, Valve directs players to the individual game’s support team; the event itself cannot provide a universal fix.
Change one demanding option at a time
Do not switch from ultra to low, change resolution, disable synchronization, and add a launch command simultaneously. You will not know which change helped or which one caused a visual defect. Apply one change, replay the same scene, and write down the result before moving to the next option.

Settings that can improve a slow demo
1. Resolution and internal render scale
Resolution determines how many pixels the GPU must draw. If a demo is running below a comfortable frame rate, lowering the selected display resolution is the most direct first test. The image may look softer, and UI elements may be less crisp, but the reduction in pixel work can help when the GPU is the limiting part of the workload.
Some demos separate output resolution from an internal render scale. In that case, keep the display output at your monitor’s resolution and reduce the internal percentage gradually. This preserves a stable desktop and interface size while rendering the 3D scene at fewer pixels. The available range and the way the percentage is applied are game-specific; a scale value from one developer’s example must not be treated as a standard for all demos.
- Try one step below the current resolution, or a small reduction in internal scale.
- Inspect text, foliage, thin geometry, and distant edges for softness or shimmering.
- If the improvement is large and the image remains readable, keep the change; otherwise restore the previous value and test another option.
2. Graphics-quality options and presets
Use the demo’s own preset labels—such as recommended, high, medium, or low—as an orderly way to reduce several effects. If the preset is too coarse, lower individual options gradually. There is no setting that is always the bottleneck: hardware, resolution, engine, and scene complexity all influence the result.

Retest after each adjustment. Look for the setting that produces a measurable improvement with the smallest visual cost. A modest reduction in a demanding effect can be preferable to dropping every option to its minimum, especially in a short demo where readability and atmosphere are part of the experience.
3. Upscaling, including FSR
An upscaler renders internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs an image closer to the output resolution. If the demo offers FSR or another upscaler, compare its quality modes on your system rather than assuming the most aggressive mode is best. Higher-quality modes generally preserve more detail while saving less GPU work; more aggressive modes can produce a softer image or reconstruction artifacts.
Upscaling is optional and title-dependent. If there is no upscaling control in the demo, do not try to force one through a generic command. One developer’s recommendation to use FSR and frame generation is advice for that particular game, not a rule for every Next Fest release.

4. Frame generation
Frame generation, when offered, creates additional displayed frames from rendered frames. It can change perceived smoothness, but it is not available in every demo and does not remove the underlying rendering workload. Follow the game’s instructions for supported hardware and modes. Compare motion clarity and input response in the same scene rather than judging only the displayed FPS number.
5. Frame-rate caps
A frame-rate cap limits how many frames the game attempts to render. It is useful when the demo’s output fluctuates widely or when you prefer a consistent cadence to an unstable peak. Set a cap that your system can sustain in the problem scene, using the values the game exposes.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →A cap is a frame-pacing choice, not a guaranteed performance increase. If the GPU is already unable to reach the cap, lowering it will not make the scene render faster; it may simply prevent unnecessary work during easier scenes.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
6. V-Sync
V-Sync coordinates presented frames with the display’s refresh cycle. With it enabled, the game may avoid visible tearing, but synchronization can affect latency and how uneven frame delivery feels. With it disabled, the game can present frames independently of the display cycle; Valve warns that this can lead to tearing or other visual artifacts.
Refresh rate and FPS are different measurements. A 120 Hz display can refresh 120 times per second, but a demo may render fewer or more frames. Test V-Sync on your own display and in the same scene: keep it enabled if tearing is distracting, or compare disabled behavior if synchronization introduces an unacceptable feel. Do not describe either choice as a universal FPS fix.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A repeatable tuning procedure
- Open the demo’s video or graphics menu. Confirm the current resolution, quality preset, render scale, upscaler, frame cap, and V-Sync state. Menu names differ between games.
- Choose a reproducible scene. Use the location where performance is worst, and repeat the same movement or encounter for every comparison.
- Lower resolution or internal render scale once. Apply the change, replay the scene, and check both smoothness and text or geometry clarity.
- If the image is too soft, restore the previous value. Move to the quality preset or one individual graphics option instead of stacking multiple reductions.
- Reduce quality gradually. Change one option, retest, and record whether the improvement is worth the visual trade-off. Repeat only while the result remains acceptable.
- Enable an available upscaler and compare its modes. Check for ghosting, shimmering, or loss of fine detail during camera movement. Remove it if the demo does not support it or if artifacts are worse than the original slowdown.
- Set a sustainable frame cap. Choose a value the demo can hold in the difficult scene, then check whether motion feels steadier in less demanding areas.
- Compare V-Sync states. Look for tearing, stutter, and input feel on your monitor. Keep the state that gives the better overall experience rather than chasing a higher counter reading.
- Save the working combination. If the demo has multiple profiles, keep a quality-oriented profile and a performance-oriented profile so you can switch without repeating the entire process.
Match the symptom to the setting
| What you notice | First test | Trade-off to check |
|---|---|---|
| Consistently low FPS, especially at high output resolution | Lower resolution or internal render scale | Softer image, reduced fine detail |
| Acceptable image but slowdowns in complex scenes | Lower the quality preset, then individual demanding options | Less detail or fewer effects; the expensive option differs by game |
| Softness or reconstruction artifacts after enabling an upscaler | Move to a higher-quality upscaling mode or disable it | Higher quality uses more GPU work; disabling may reduce performance |
| Uneven motion despite a high peak FPS | Try a sustainable frame cap and compare V-Sync states | Lower peak output or changed latency and synchronization behavior |
| Horizontal breaks in moving images | Compare V-Sync enabled and disabled | Disabling can produce tearing or artifacts; enabling may change frame pacing |
| A launch command has no effect | Remove it and check the specific game’s documentation | Many documented graphics commands apply only to GoldSrc or Source games |
Why generic launch options are a poor first choice
Steam supports launch options that can alter how a game starts, but Valve’s documentation includes compatibility caveats. Many of the graphics commands it lists are specific to GoldSrc or Source games. A command copied from a forum or from another demo may be ignored, produce an unwanted mode, or create a new troubleshooting problem.
Use a launch option only when the individual game’s documentation explicitly supports it and explains the expected effect. Record the original option list before experimenting. If the demo stops launching or behaves differently, remove the added command and return to the in-game settings.
Common mistakes during Next Fest testing
- Assuming every demo has the same menu. Resolution scaling, upscaling, frame generation, and caps may be absent or labeled differently.
- Changing several variables at once. This hides the cause of an improvement or a new artifact.
- Using a high FPS counter as the only measure. Tearing, stutter, latency, and image quality determine whether the game actually feels better.
- Confusing refresh rate with FPS. The monitor’s refresh capability does not force the game to render at that rate.
- Copying a game-specific recommendation. Advice about FSR, frame generation, or a particular scale range belongs to the title that published it.
- Expecting a universal percentage gain. Official guidance does not establish a cross-demo benchmark, so any promised number would overstate what is known.
A practical stopping rule
Stop tuning when the problem scene is acceptably smooth, the image remains readable, and further reductions would cost more visual quality than they return in playability. Keep a note of the final values because a demo update can reset settings or change available options. If none of the supported combinations resolves the issue, document the resolution, quality choices, and symptoms when contacting that game’s support team; Steam’s general settings cannot substitute for a developer-specific fix.
Quick Recap
Quick checklist
- Use the same demanding scene for every comparison.
- Test resolution or render scale before making broad quality cuts.
- Lower one graphics option at a time.
- Use FSR, another upscaler, or frame generation only if the demo offers and documents it.
- Choose a frame cap for consistency, not as a guaranteed FPS increase.
- Compare V-Sync states while watching for tearing and altered frame pacing.
- Avoid generic launch commands unless the specific game supports them.
- Keep the combination that balances clarity, smoothness, and responsiveness on your hardware and display.
