To change a child’s Minecraft multiplayer permissions, use the parent Microsoft account that manages the child in a Microsoft family group. Open Microsoft/Xbox privacy and online-safety controls—or the Xbox Family app—select the child, and change the specific permission for multiplayer, Realms, cross-network play, friends, or communication. Then check Minecraft’s own world settings, friend relationship, game updates, and any console online-service requirement, because an account permission is only one of several gates.
What Minecraft parental controls actually control
Minecraft’s parental controls are account permissions managed through Microsoft and Xbox family-safety features. They apply even when the child plays on a PC, phone, tablet, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, or another platform rather than an Xbox. Minecraft’s own help documentation says that “Minecraft uses Microsoft and Xbox family safety features to manage parental controls even if you do not play Minecraft on an Xbox.”

The controls are separate capabilities, not one universal “safe mode.” Depending on the edition and the current account interface, you may manage whether the child can join multiplayer games or Realms, play with people on other networks, find or add friends, send or accept friend requests, and communicate with other players. Marketplace and other purchase permissions are also part of Microsoft family controls, but they are separate from multiplayer access.

It helps to think of online access as a series of gates. The parent account controls whether the child account is permitted to use a capability. The game or Realm may have its own access conditions, and a console may have a separate online-service requirement. A permission change can open one gate without satisfying the others. This is why it is useful to identify the exact activity that is failing instead of turning on every available option.

There are additional gates outside the account permission. A Bedrock world can have multiplayer turned off, the joining players may need to be Minecraft friends, a game update can prevent connections, and console multiplayer may require that platform’s online-service subscription. Changing the family setting does not override any of those conditions.
Before you change a setting
Use the correct parent and child accounts
The child must sign in with a Microsoft account, and that account must be associated with the parent’s Microsoft family group. If the child is not in a family group, sign in with the parent account, create a group, and add the existing child account or create a child account through the family setup. Microsoft determines whether an account is treated as a child account according to the statutory age rules in the account’s region; there is no single worldwide age threshold to apply.
Only a parent account can modify a child’s settings. Signing in to the child’s Microsoft account will not give you the parent controls, even if that account owns Minecraft or is the one used on the console. Before changing anything, check that the child profile listed in the family group matches the Microsoft account the child actually uses to sign in to Minecraft. A setting changed for a different profile will not resolve the permissions of the account being used in the game.

Identify the edition and the activity
Check whether the child is using Bedrock Edition or Java Edition before changing anything. Minecraft’s official multiplayer guidance uses different instructions for the two editions. Also define the intended activity: joining a friend’s world, hosting a Bedrock world, entering a Realm, using a cross-network session, finding friends, or communicating in chat. Selecting a broad permission when the child needs only one capability gives you less control than changing the relevant setting individually.
For example, a child who can join a friend on the same platform may still be unable to join a Bedrock session hosted on another platform if cross-network play is not allowed. Likewise, being allowed to join multiplayer does not by itself grant permission to contact every player. Separate the question “Can the child enter this game?” from “Can the child find or communicate with these players?” when reviewing the available settings.
Expect labels to vary
Microsoft and Xbox periodically change account pages and labels. Some official Minecraft help pages are displayed in translated versions that warn of possible translation errors. If the English account page uses wording that differs from an older guide, follow the current label that describes the same capability rather than looking for an exact sentence from a screenshot. Avoid relying on a remembered menu path if the interface has changed; select the child first, then look for the privacy, online-safety, or multiplayer controls relevant to the activity.

Step-by-step: change Minecraft permissions
- Confirm the family relationship. Sign in to the parent Microsoft account and verify that the child’s Microsoft account appears in the Microsoft family group. Add the existing account or create the child account if necessary.
- Choose a management route. Use Microsoft/Xbox privacy and online-safety settings in a web browser, or open the Xbox Family app. Both routes are intended for the parent account. Sign in as the parent, not as the child.
- Select the child account. Open the family member whose Minecraft access you want to change, then enter the privacy, online-safety, or multiplayer controls. The exact navigation names can change with the account interface.
- Change only the needed permission. For a child who needs to join a friend’s game, enable the setting for multiplayer access. For a Realm, make sure the multiplayer/Realms permission allows it. If the players use different platforms, enable the cross-network-play permission as well. Use the friend-discovery or friend-request control for finding and adding players, and use communication controls for chat or other player communication.
- Save or confirm the change. Some account pages save immediately; others require a confirmation button. Review the child account shown on the page before confirming so you do not alter another family member’s settings.
- Refresh Minecraft. Close the game and sign in again if the new permission is not visible. Minecraft’s Realms Stories permissions guidance specifically recommends restarting Minecraft after changing settings. Treat that as a practical refresh step, not as a claim that every account change always requires a restart.
If you are unsure which control caused the block, change one relevant permission at a time and test the intended activity. That keeps the result easier to understand: if the child can now join, you know which gate mattered. If nothing changes, continue to the world, friend, version, and platform checks rather than enabling unrelated settings. Keep a note of the original choices so you can restore them if needed.
Which permission controls which activity?
| Activity | Bedrock guidance | Java guidance | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Join multiplayer games | Multiplayer access is an explicit control. | Child-account multiplayer permission still matters, even though the Java help instructions emphasize friend requests and communication. | Account permission, then the host’s world or server settings. |
| Join or use Realms | Realms access is included with the multiplayer controls. | Check the current child-account permissions for the Java activity being attempted. | Account permission and the Realm invitation or membership. |
| Play across networks | Cross-network play is a separate Bedrock control. | Not stated as a separate control in the cited Java guidance. | Whether the session actually uses different platforms or networks. |
| Find or add friends | Use the control for finding or adding friends. | Java guidance refers to friend requests. | Both accounts’ friend relationship and the current account labels. |
| Communicate | Communication is a separate permission; verify the choices currently shown. | Communication controls are documented, including a friend-only choice in the official Java guidance. | Who the child can communicate with, not merely whether multiplayer is enabled. |
The table describes the capabilities identified in Minecraft’s official guidance, not a promise that every edition exposes identical switches. The account page is authoritative for the options available to that child and region. The practical comparison is by edition, activity, and intended audience: first identify whether the game is Java or Bedrock, then identify whether the child needs multiplayer, Realms, cross-network play, friend tools, or communication, and finally choose the narrowest audience the current interface makes available.
Do not assume that a control called “friends” means exactly the same thing in every edition. In Bedrock, friend discovery or adding friends is relevant to finding players, and joining a world may also depend on the Minecraft friend relationship. Java guidance refers to friend requests and separately discusses communication. Read the current descriptions in the account controls and test the specific activity rather than translating one edition’s label to another.
How to choose safer settings without blocking needed play
Joining known friends
If the child should play with a small group, enable multiplayer only when needed, use the friend-related controls to limit discovery or requests where the interface offers that choice, and select the narrowest communication audience that still works for the group. The child may still need to be connected as a Minecraft friend for a Bedrock world to accept the join request.
Before changing permissions, clarify who is hosting and which account the child should join. That helps distinguish a permission issue from an invitation issue: a child can have multiplayer allowed but still need the host to invite the correct Microsoft/Minecraft account or satisfy the world’s access conditions. If the child is only trying to play with known friends, broader discovery or communication settings may not be necessary.

Bedrock cross-network play is the relevant permission when players use different platforms. Enabling ordinary multiplayer without enabling cross-network play can leave a cross-platform session unavailable. Explain to the child that this permission changes who can join by platform; it does not replace communication controls or the host’s world setting.

Check whether the other player is actually on a different platform before turning on cross-network play. If both players use the same platform, troubleshoot ordinary multiplayer, friendship, world settings, and game versions first. This prevents treating cross-network access as a general repair for every join problem.
Using a Realm
A Realm requires the child account to be allowed to use multiplayer/Realms and, where applicable, to have access through the Realm’s invitation or membership. If the permission was just changed, close and reopen Minecraft before testing. Realms access does not automatically authorize every other multiplayer destination.
Keep the invitation or membership question separate from the family permission. A child may be allowed to use Realms but still need access to a particular Realm. Conversely, having an invitation does not remove the need for the account to be allowed to use the relevant online feature.

Communication and game access are distinct. A child may be allowed into a multiplayer game while communication remains limited, or communication may be available to a narrower group. Java’s official guidance describes a friend-only communication choice; for Bedrock and other current interfaces, read the options presented in the parent account rather than assuming the same audience labels.
Choose communication separately from the ability to join. If the family goal is to let the child play while limiting who can contact them, inspect the communication options rather than disabling multiplayer automatically. The available choices can depend on the edition and interface, so do not assume that a particular audience choice exists on every account.
Purchases as a separate family control
Microsoft family resources also cover what children can buy in Minecraft experiences, including Marketplace purchases. Those controls do not determine whether a child can join a multiplayer world. Configure spending separately if that is part of your family rules. A child’s ability to access Marketplace content and the ability to join other players are different account-management questions.

Why Bedrock multiplayer can still be unavailable
When a friend cannot join a Bedrock world after you change the family permission, work through the gates in this order. The order moves from the host’s world to the joining account and then to shared technical or platform requirements, making it easier to identify the remaining cause.
- Check the host world. Open the world’s settings and confirm that multiplayer is enabled. An account-level allowance cannot turn multiplayer on inside a world where the host disabled it.
- Check the joining account. Verify that the child’s parent account allows multiplayer and, if needed, cross-network play. Refresh the child’s sign-in after changing the permission.
- Check the Minecraft friendship. Bedrock joining can depend on the players being connected as Minecraft friends. Confirm the intended accounts, not merely contacts on a console or phone.
- Update both games. Make sure the host and joining player are running compatible, current versions. A version mismatch can prevent a join even when privacy settings are correct.
- Check the platform subscription. Console online play may require the platform’s current online-service subscription. Minecraft’s support guidance lists Xbox Game Pass Core, Nintendo Switch Online, and PlayStation Plus as examples of services that may apply. Requirements and plan names can change, so verify the current rule for the specific console and region.
- Test again after restarting. Close Minecraft on both devices, sign in again, and retry the invitation or join action.
Do not treat a successful local-world test as proof that every server, Realm, or cross-network combination is permitted. Each destination can impose its own invitation, version, or network conditions. Similarly, do not assume that a console subscription is needed for every form of Minecraft multiplayer: the cited subscription examples concern console online play, and current requirements depend on the platform and region.
Java multiplayer and servers
For Java Edition, the normal path is to choose Multiplayer, select an existing server, or use the option to add a server or direct-connect with its address, and then join. Minecraft says a Java online server does not require a Realms subscription. That removes the need for a Realms plan; it does not remove the child account’s multiplayer and communication permissions.
If Java multiplayer is blocked, return to the parent account’s privacy and online-safety controls, check friend-request and communication permissions, and confirm that the child account itself—not a different Microsoft login—is being used in the launcher. A server operator’s rules and the child’s account permissions remain separate layers.
For a child trying to join a server, distinguish the server route from a Realm route. A Java online server can be joined through its listing or address without a Realms subscription, but the child must still be permitted to use online multiplayer. The operator may also have rules governing who can enter; an account permission does not make a server accept every player.
Safety features and their limits
Microsoft account parental controls can govern which online games a child may access, who they can communicate with, and what they can buy. Minecraft also describes proactive chat filtering for Bedrock Edition, Java Edition Realms, and verified partner Bedrock servers.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Filtering is not a guarantee that every message or interaction is harmless. The described coverage does not establish that every independently operated server is included, and account controls do not eliminate risks such as unwanted invitations, impersonation, or links shared outside the filtered channels. Set permissions deliberately, discuss what the child should do when a player behaves badly, and use the platform’s reporting and blocking tools when available. Treat parental controls as one part of an overall safety approach rather than a promise that all online contact is screened.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Changing settings while signed in as the child. Only the parent account can modify child settings.
- Looking for all controls inside Minecraft. The principal permissions live in Microsoft/Xbox family settings, even on non-Xbox platforms.
- Enabling multiplayer but forgetting cross-network play. Cross-platform Bedrock sessions can need both permissions.
- Assuming account permission overrides a world setting. The host must enable multiplayer in the Bedrock world.
- Confusing console friends with Minecraft friends. Bedrock joining may depend on the Minecraft friendship relationship.
- Assuming a subscription is universal. Console online-service requirements differ by platform and can change.
- Copying an old menu path exactly. Labels change; use the current privacy and online-safety wording shown for the selected child.
- Assuming Java and Bedrock expose identical controls. Their documented settings and multiplayer flows differ.
- Treating an invitation as the only requirement. A Realm or world invitation does not replace the child account’s permission to use multiplayer.
- Changing every permission at once. Adjusting only the necessary control makes it easier to understand what resolved the problem and avoids broadening access unnecessarily.
A practical permission checklist
- The parent Microsoft account manages the child in a family group.
- The child signs into Minecraft with the Microsoft account shown in that family group.
- The edition is identified as Java or Bedrock.
- The required activity is identified: multiplayer, Realms, cross-network play, friends, or communication.
- Only the needed account permission is enabled.
- For Bedrock, the host world has multiplayer enabled and the players are Minecraft friends when required.
- Both players are updated to compatible game versions.
- The relevant console online-service requirement has been checked.
- Minecraft was restarted after a change that did not appear immediately.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where do I change Minecraft parental controls?
Use the parent Microsoft account associated with the child through a Microsoft family group. Open Microsoft/Xbox privacy and online-safety settings or the Xbox Family app, select the child, and change the relevant permission. Minecraft account permissions are managed through Microsoft/Xbox family features even when the child plays on a non-Xbox device.
Why can’t my child join a friend’s Bedrock world after multiplayer is allowed?
Check that multiplayer is enabled in the host’s world, the child’s account allows multiplayer and any needed cross-network play, the players are connected as Minecraft friends, both games are current and compatible, and any applicable console online-service requirement is met. Restart Minecraft and retry if a setting change has not appeared.

One-click scans. No signup required.
Does my child need a Realm subscription to join a Java server?
Minecraft says a Java online server does not require a Realms subscription. The child still needs the relevant account permission for online multiplayer, and the server may have its own rules for entry.
Can I allow multiplayer but restrict communication?
Game access and communication are separate controls. Java guidance describes a friend-only communication choice; options vary by edition and account interface, so review the choices shown for the child rather than assuming the same audience settings are available everywhere.
Do Minecraft parental controls cover Marketplace purchases?
Microsoft family controls also address what children can buy in Minecraft experiences, including Marketplace purchases. Purchase permissions are separate from multiplayer and should be configured separately if you want to manage spending.
The Bottom Line
Manage Minecraft permissions from the parent Microsoft account in the family group, and change only the control that matches the child’s edition and activity. If multiplayer still fails, check the world or server, friend relationship, cross-network permission, game versions, and applicable console online-service requirement; no single account switch overrides every other gate.
