Valve’s notes confirm the beta-channel change, but do not give a date for its rollout to every stable-client user.
What the new warning means
The warning is an installation-time signal for a specific situation: Valve knows that the Windows version of the game does not currently work through Proton. It is not a warning that all Linux gaming is unsupported, and it does not mean every game without a native Linux build will fail.

Steam’s Linux client is reusing the SteamOS unsupported dialog on desktop Linux. That is a user-interface choice, not an indication that a desktop Linux installation has become SteamOS or that the game has failed every possible Linux configuration.

How Proton fits into the warning
Proton is Valve’s modified distribution of Wine for running Windows games on Linux through Steam Play. Valve describes it as including Vulkan-based implementations of Direct3D 11 and 12, Steamworks and OpenVR bridges, fullscreen and gamepad improvements, and the esync patchset. Valve says the underlying Wine improvements were designed and funded in a joint development effort with CodeWeavers.
Proton is a compatibility layer, not a promise that a Windows game will run. Valve specifically notes that games using complex digital-rights-management (DRM) or anti-cheat systems may be difficult or impossible to support. Those dependencies can block a game even when its graphics API and ordinary Windows files translate successfully.

What to do when Steam displays the dialog
- Check which build you are installing. A title may offer a native Linux build, or Steam may be preparing the Windows build to run through Proton. The warning concerns the Proton path; it is not automatically a verdict on a separately maintained native build.
- Read the game’s current compatibility evidence. Check recent community reports and the developer’s stated DRM or anti-cheat policy. Look for reports tied to the current game version, distribution, graphics driver and Proton version rather than relying on an old success story.
- Decide whether the setup effort is acceptable. A known-incompatible title can require workarounds, a different launch configuration or a change by the developer before it becomes playable. If reliable current reports do not show a working path, do not assume that repeated Proton-version changes will solve it.
- If you proceed, treat it as an experiment. Steam may still let you install or select a compatibility tool, but forcing Proton overrides the warning; it does not remove the underlying DRM, anti-cheat or game-update limitation.
How to interpret the compatibility-tool selector
The same Linux client notes say the compatibility-tool selector is always visible. Steam puts the recommended compatibility tool, or a native game’s Steam Runtime, at the top and labels it Default. The client also adds aliases such as Proton Stable, making the choices easier to identify than version-only labels.

These controls help you choose a tool when a game is expected to work, or when you are troubleshooting a title with known issues. They are not a guarantee that a different Proton release will make a game supported. Proton changes, game patches, graphics drivers, launchers, DRM and anti-cheat policies can all alter the result.

Native Linux versus Windows through Proton

A native build is not automatically better in every technical respect, and a Proton build is not automatically worse. The relevant question is whether the specific build, dependencies and current updates work on the reader’s distribution and hardware.
Is the warning a guarantee of failure?
No. It is a strong known-incompatibility signal, not a mathematical guarantee that the program will never launch. A title might change after a game update, a developer’s anti-cheat adjustment or a Proton fix. However, the warning means Steam’s current compatibility data does not support expecting a working installation, so it should be treated as a purchasing and setup risk.

The reverse is equally important: no warning is not a guarantee of success. Valve’s support guidance describes Steam Play as potentially able to run Windows-only games on Linux while stating that compatibility is not guaranteed. Valve also warns that manually searching for games supported by the Linux Steam client does not guarantee correct results.

Desktop Linux and SteamOS are not the same signal
SteamOS and Steam Deck users are familiar with compatibility and verification dialogs designed for that platform. The new desktop behavior borrows the unsupported dialog when Valve has identified a Proton failure, but the borrowed wording should not be read as a new desktop-Linux certification system. The underlying trigger is the known Proton incompatibility, and the release note documents it specifically for desktop Linux.

What is known about availability
Valve’s documented change is in the Steam Client Beta release notes under Linux. Those notes establish the feature’s behavior in the beta channel; they do not establish a universal stable-release date. If a desktop installation does not show the dialog yet, that can simply mean the account is using a stable client or has not received the relevant rollout, not that Valve has judged the game compatible.
