If you want to stream non-Steam games, other apps, or your entire PC desktop, Moonlight with Sunshine is the more flexible option. Neither has a proven universal edge in Android latency or image quality: the result depends on the host PC, network, Android device, and game.
What each option does
Steam Remote Play sends games running through Steam to the Steam Link app on Android. Moonlight is a streaming client that connects to host software on your PC; Moonlight’s current Android listing describes Sunshine as supporting all GPUs, while NVIDIA GeForce Experience is NVIDIA-only.
That distinction matters more than the app names: Steam Link is the straightforward starting point for a Steam library, while Moonlight can reach beyond Steam when paired with a compatible host.

Set up Steam Link on Android
Valve lists Android 5.0 or newer for the Steam Link app. Its setup requires Steam to be running on the host PC; the phone and PC should be on the same network for initial setup. Valve’s support materials also call for a 5 GHz wireless router.

- On the PC, install or open Steam and sign in.
- Connect the Android device to the same network as the PC.
- Install and open the Steam Link app, then follow its prompts to find and pair with the PC.
- Start streaming and check the game’s controls. Steam games can have different touch-control layouts; developers can create recommended layouts for phone and tablet play and tune them for device aspect ratios. Steamworks documentation describes those configurations.
Valve lists the Steam Controller, Xbox One S controller, DualShock 4 on Android 9.0 or newer, Razer Kishi, and Raiju Mobile among supported controllers. Other input devices may work without being officially supported. See Valve’s controller and Android support details.
Set up Moonlight with Sunshine
Moonlight’s Android listing describes support for Android 4.1 or newer, though it recommends a capable client device for smooth hardware video decoding. Check the current app listing for requirements before installing, since app and OS support can change.

- Install Sunshine on the PC you want to stream from and complete its first-time setup in Sunshine’s web interface.
- Install Moonlight on the Android device and connect it to the same network as the host PC.
- Select the PC in Moonlight and enter the PIN shown by the client into Sunshine to pair the devices.
- Choose Steam, Desktop, or another available entry to begin streaming. Sunshine includes Steam and Desktop entries; you can add games and apps manually using the instructions in the Moonlight setup guide.
For a stronger starting point, Moonlight recommends a mid- to high-end wireless router, 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the Android device, and an Ethernet connection between the PC and router. Valve also recommends a 5 GHz wireless router for Steam Link. These are network recommendations, not guarantees of a particular frame rate, latency, or picture quality. Moonlight itself warns that performance can vary with the client device and network setup.
Controllers and touch controls
Moonlight supports Android-mapped gamepads and documents Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, and PS4 controllers in its setup guide; its Android listing also names PS5 and Xbox Series controller families. However, compatibility is device-dependent: Moonlight warns that some combinations, particularly PlayStation controllers over Bluetooth, can have latency or connection problems. Check your phone’s controller compatibility and test button mapping before buying an accessory. A controller is optional, not a streaming requirement.

Steam’s published Android list includes selected Xbox and PlayStation devices as well as the Razer Kishi. Touch controls are also possible, but their quality and layout can vary by game because Steamworks lets developers provide title-specific configurations.
Streaming outside your home
Moonlight says streaming over the internet works with many ISPs and often uses its Internet Hosting Tool. That does not guarantee every network will work: some router or ISP configurations may need additional setup. Remote wake-up is not always possible, so Moonlight recommends leaving the host PC awake for sessions away from home. The Steam materials cited here do not establish an equivalent Android remote-access comparison.

HDR and performance: what is established
Moonlight’s HDR guidance requires an HDR10-capable client, a GPU that can encode HEVC Main 10, and an HDR10-enabled game. If a game uses the operating system’s HDR mode, the host also needs an HDR display connected. Moonlight labels HDR10 streaming beta in its setup guide and lists known issues, so Android HDR is not automatic or universal. The reviewed Steam sources do not establish an equivalent Android HDR comparison.
Valve describes Remote Play as real-time video encoding over a custom low-latency network protocol. That is a description of Valve’s technology, not evidence that Steam Link is faster than Moonlight—or vice versa. There is no controlled, current Android comparison here that tests both clients on the same host, game, phone, network, and measurement method. Try the same game under the same conditions and judge the result on your own setup rather than relying on a universal speed claim.
