Neither service is a universal winner. Steam Remote Play is usually the simpler choice when your games are already in Steam, you want to use Steam Link, or friends need to join a supported local-multiplayer game through Remote Play Together. Moonlight paired with Sunshine is the more configurable route, with a broad range of client devices and documented hardware encoding for AMD, Intel, and Nvidia GPUs. Your actual result depends on the host PC, client decoder, network path, codec, bitrate, game and settings, so a same-game comparison on your own network is more meaningful than a blanket claim that one is faster.

Steam Remote Play and Moonlight at a glance

Both approaches leave the game running on a gaming PC. That computer renders the game, encodes its video and audio, and sends the stream across the network. The remote device decodes the stream and sends controller, keyboard or mouse input back to the host. Streaming changes where you play; it does not move the game’s rendering workload to the client.

How the two streaming systems work

Steam Remote Play

Steam Remote Play connects Steam on the host PC to Steam or Steam Link on another device. The host captures the running game’s output, encodes it and transmits video and audio. Input from the remote controller or keyboard is returned to the game. Valve says all Steam games can be streamed between a user’s own computers, although the suitability of Remote Play Together and individual Steam Link devices is game- and device-specific.

Remote Play Together is a related feature rather than a different streaming engine. One player launches a supported local-multiplayer game and invites friends through Steam; the host continues to run the game while invited players send their inputs. Valve’s feature page says up to four players can join, with more possible when connections are fast. Check the game’s store page before planning a session.

Moonlight with Sunshine

Moonlight is the client. Its FAQ describes it as an unofficial, open-source client for NVIDIA SHIELD streaming software and recommends Sunshine as the host. Sunshine runs on the gaming PC, provides the stream and exposes Steam plus a remote-desktop entry by default; you can add other games or applications manually. This separation gives you more control, but it also means installing and maintaining two pieces of software instead of starting with a Steam library.

Sunshine can use hardware encoders on AMD, Intel and Nvidia graphics hardware, or fall back to software encoding. Moonlight then decodes the selected stream on the client. Whether a particular codec, resolution or frame rate works smoothly still depends on the exact host GPU, client hardware and network.

Which option fits your use case?

Choose Steam Remote Play for a Steam-first setup

  • Your games already live in Steam and you want to select them from the familiar library.
  • You plan to play on a supported Steam Link device or another computer signed in to Steam.
  • You need Remote Play Together for a supported local-multiplayer title.
  • You prefer the fewest additional services and configuration screens.

Steam’s integration is its main advantage: the account, library, launch process and friend invitations are in one place. It does not guarantee lower latency or a cleaner image on every network.

Choose Moonlight and Sunshine for control or broader clients

  • You want to stream a non-Steam game, emulator, desktop application or another program by adding it to Sunshine.
  • Your client is an Android, iOS, Apple TV, ChromeOS, Raspberry Pi 4, Fire TV or other Moonlight-supported device.
  • You want a self-hosted arrangement with explicit host-encoder choices and adjustable streaming settings.
  • You are comfortable pairing devices, managing firewall or router rules and troubleshooting a separate host application.

Moonlight is not automatically faster. Its practical advantage is flexibility: Sunshine is designed as a general host, while Moonlight’s clients span more device categories than a typical PC-only setup.

Requirements that determine the experience

Host PC

For ordinary Steam Remote Play, Valve recommends at least a quad-core CPU and a host capable of hardware-accelerated encoding. These are recommendations, not a promise of a particular frame rate or image quality. Sunshine’s documented hardware-encoding support covers AMD, Intel and Nvidia GPUs; software encoding is available when hardware encoding cannot be used, but the resulting load and quality depend on the processor.

Client decoding

Valve’s guidance calls for a client GPU with hardware-accelerated H.264 decoding. Moonlight’s setup documentation warns that older computers without hardware H.264 decoding may have to decode on the CPU and can fail to maintain 60 frames per second without lag. Requirements and supported platform versions change, so check the live guide for the specific phone, television, handheld or computer you intend to use.

Home network

For either method, connect the gaming PC to the router by Ethernet when feasible. Moonlight recommends a mid- to high-end router and a strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) or Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) link to the client. Valve likewise recommends wired networking for the best Remote Play experience. If the host is currently on Wi-Fi, a properly installed Cat 6 Ethernet cable can remove one source of wireless contention, but no cable guarantees a particular latency improvement.

On the client, avoid a weak 2.4 GHz connection, crowded channels and mesh backhaul links that fluctuate under load. Keep the client near the access point for testing, then move it to the location where you actually plan to play.

How to set up Steam Remote Play

  1. Install the current Steam client on the gaming PC and sign in to the account that owns the game.
  2. Open Steam’s settings and the Remote Play section. Leave Remote Play enabled on the host.
  3. Install Steam or the Steam Link app on the second computer or supported device, then sign in to the same Steam account when using your own library.
  4. Pair the client with the host when Steam or Steam Link prompts you. Keep both devices on the same home network for the first test.
  5. Start a game from the Steam library on the client. Video and audio should appear on the client while the game continues to run on the host.
  6. If the stream stutters, try the wired-host arrangement first. Valve also suggests lowering the game’s resolution or disabling VSync when troubleshooting.

For Remote Play Together, open a supported local-multiplayer game on the host, open the Steam overlay and invite friends through the Remote Play Together option. The host owns and runs the game; each invited player connects through the supported Steam session. Confirm the feature on the game’s store page because not every title supports it.

How to set up Moonlight with Sunshine

  1. Install Sunshine on the gaming PC from the current LizardByte documentation and complete its host setup.
  2. Confirm that Sunshine exposes Steam and its remote-desktop entry. Add a game or application in Sunshine if it is not listed automatically.
  3. Install Moonlight on the target client. Official clients are listed for Windows, macOS, Linux, Raspberry Pi 4, Steam Link hardware, Android, Amazon Fire tablets and TV, iOS, Apple TV and ChromeOS.
  4. Open Moonlight on the same home network. Select the Sunshine host; Moonlight displays a pairing PIN.
  5. Enter that PIN in Sunshine’s host interface and approve the pairing.
  6. Select Steam, the desktop entry or a custom application in Moonlight and start a short test session.
  7. Use Moonlight’s client statistics to observe decoding, rendering, network and dropped-frame behavior while you adjust resolution, frame rate, codec or bitrate.

Sunshine is the host and Moonlight is the client; installing only one of them does not create a working stream. Because Sunshine is self-hosted, you are responsible for keeping its software current and for understanding which applications and permissions you expose.

Streaming over the internet instead of at home

Both systems can be used beyond the host’s local network, but remote access adds router, firewall and upload-capacity variables. Steam Remote Play handles access through Steam’s service and still depends on the quality of both internet connections.

Moonlight’s guide documents Sunshine’s automatic UPnP option as well as manual and other network paths. Moonlight recommends leaving at least 1 Mbps of upload capacity beyond the bitrate you select so other household traffic has room. Some connections without a dedicated public IP can use ZeroTier, although that route requires additional configuration. Do not expose a host blindly: understand your router’s port rules, firewall prompts and the security implications of remote desktop access.

How to compare them fairly at home

Official documentation does not provide a controlled, head-to-head latency or image-quality result for Steam Remote Play versus Moonlight. To decide for your setup, compare like with like rather than relying on community claims that one is categorically smoother.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Use the same gaming PC, client device, controller and game scene.
  2. Keep output resolution, target frame rate, codec and bitrate as close as each application allows.
  3. Use hardware encoding on the host and hardware decoding on the client whenever both support it.
  4. Run each stream for several minutes through the same demanding section of the game.
  5. Record input response, visible stutter, blockiness, audio dropouts, frame pacing and disconnects.
  6. Check Steam’s performance overlay or Moonlight’s statistics, but do not treat unlike measurements as a laboratory benchmark.
  7. Repeat the comparison from the network location where you will actually play, including an internet test if remote access is the goal.

The network path, host encoder and client decoder can overwhelm small differences in application behavior. A result on a wired desktop says little about a television two rooms away on congested Wi-Fi.

Troubleshooting common failures

Black screen, launch failure or no input in Steam

  • Verify that Steam is running and signed in on the host and that the intended game is installed.
  • Test with the host and client on the same network before investigating internet access.
  • Use a wired host connection and lower the game’s resolution if the stream becomes unstable.
  • Try disabling VSync as Valve suggests for troubleshooting, then retest rather than changing several settings at once.
  • Check the game’s store page for Remote Play or Remote Play Together support when a multiplayer invitation is missing.

Moonlight cannot find or pair with Sunshine

  • Confirm that Sunshine is running and that the host and client can reach each other on the local network.
  • Allow Sunshine through the host firewall when prompted, then restart both applications and repeat the PIN pairing.
  • Check that you selected the Sunshine host in Moonlight, not an old or duplicate entry.
  • For internet play, review UPnP, manual forwarding or the alternative network method described in Moonlight’s guide; local pairing does not prove that remote access is configured.

Stutter, audio glitches or delayed controls

  • Connect the host to the router by Ethernet and move the client to a strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 or Wi-Fi 6 signal.
  • Reduce stream resolution, frame rate or bitrate until dropped frames and decoder overload stop.
  • Check whether the client is decoding H.264 in hardware. CPU decoding on an older device can prevent smooth 60-FPS playback.
  • Watch the performance overlay or Moonlight statistics to distinguish network loss from encode or decode saturation.
  • Close competing uploads, downloads and cloud-sync jobs; remote streaming needs sustained capacity, not just a high speed-test peak.

HDR and VR have extra conditions

HDR is not guaranteed by choosing Moonlight or Steam. Moonlight’s documentation describes HDR10 support only on certain clients and combinations of codec, display and hardware, along with known issues. Verify the exact client and display path before planning an HDR setup.

Valve’s VR Remote Play requirements are a separate use case: Windows 10 or newer, a GTX 970 or better, 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5, a wired PC-to-router connection and a Meta Quest 2, 3 or Pro are among the stated requirements. Valve also says Remote Play Together is not supported for VR. Those conditions should not be generalized to ordinary flat-screen streaming.

A practical decision checklist

  • Pick Steam Remote Play when the library is in Steam, you want Steam Link convenience or you need supported Remote Play Together invitations.
  • Pick Moonlight with Sunshine when you need custom desktop or non-Steam apps, a particular Moonlight client platform or more host-side configuration control.
  • Improve either option first by wiring the host, using a strong client connection and confirming hardware encode/decode support.
  • Test before committing with identical game, device, network and stream settings; no reviewed official source establishes a universal latency or image-quality winner.
