Steam Reveals Its Best Games of 2024: What the Charts Actually Measure

Steam’s Best of 2024 is a set of metric-specific charts covering data through December 15, with randomized tiers rather than precise rankings.

Steam’s “Best of 2024” is a set of retrospective charts, not one definitive ranking of the year’s best games. The categories measure revenue or peak player concurrency, and Steam groups entries into tiers whose order is randomized. Its data covers January 1 through December 15, 2024—not the entire calendar year.

What Steam’s Best of 2024 charts show

Steam’s 2024 retrospective separates games into categories such as bestsellers, new releases, and most played. It also includes dedicated Steam Deck, controller, and VR groupings. Those categories answer different questions: how much revenue a game generated, how its launch performed, or how many players were online at once. They are not combined into a single score for quality.

Steam says the lists use data from January 1 through December 15, 2024. The charts therefore describe that stated period, rather than results through December 31. The official Best of Steam 2024 retrospective is the appropriate reference for its historical categories; Steam’s current chart overview is a separate, changing view.

How Steam defines each category

Category What it measures What it does not establish
Bestsellers Total gross revenue on Steam during the 2024 data window. Steam’s methodology includes game sales, DLC, and in-game transaction revenue. Copies sold, or revenue from game sales alone.
New releases Revenue in each qualifying 2024 release’s first two weeks after launch. Full-year revenue or performance over the rest of 2024.
Most played Peak concurrent-player count recorded during 2024; the annual list includes games that exceeded 50,000 concurrent players. Annual unique players, total playtime, or the number of people who played across the year.
Steam Deck, controller, and VR Separate groupings for those platforms or hardware-related contexts. A shared ranking or directly comparable score across those groupings and the revenue or concurrency charts.

Valve’s explanation of Steam chart methods distinguishes concurrent-player counts from other views, such as daily unique players. A peak concurrent count is a snapshot of how many people were playing simultaneously at the chart’s high point; it is not a count of everyone who played over a year. Valve Steam Deck OLED 1TB Handheld Gaming Console

  • 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
  • Wi-Fi 6E

  • Carrying case with removable liner

Are games in each tier ranked in order?

No. Steam divides entries into four tiers and randomizes their display order within each tier. It also says it does not disclose the precise revenue behind these lists. A game’s tier is meaningful; its position within that tier is not an exact rank.

Tier Range
Platinum 1–12
Gold 13–24
Silver 25–50
Bronze 51–100

For example, it is accurate to say that a game appeared in Platinum. The randomized presentation does not support calling it the top game in Platinum or assigning it a precise place in the tier.

How to use the lists when choosing a game

  • Use the bestseller category as a signal of commercial performance on Steam, not as a review score or a count of copies sold.
  • Use the new-release category to identify strong first-two-week revenue among 2024 launches, not to infer that a title remained a bestseller all year.
  • Use the most-played category as evidence that a game reached a high simultaneous player count during the year, not as a measure of its total audience or hours played.
  • Compare a game’s tier within its category, and consult the retrospective itself for the titles and category placements shown there.

These distinctions matter because a commercial chart, a launch-window chart, and a concurrency chart can each highlight different games. None, on its own, says whether a game is well reviewed or suited to a particular player.
