Steam’s lifetime score and recent review score answer different questions: the lifetime score reflects eligible recommendations over a game’s life, while the recent score reflects the past 30 days. A gap between them is a signal to investigate—not proof that an update, controversy, or fix caused it. Check review volume, language, dates, and recurring themes before deciding what the scores say about the game now.
What does Steam’s recent review score mean?
Steamworks defines the recent review period as the past 30 days; the lifetime score covers the product’s full review history. Steam presents these as separate time windows, not two measurements of the same period. The score is a percentage-based recommendation measure with a category, not an average star rating. Steamworks’ User Reviews documentation explains the score and its time scopes.

Steam says it shows a recent score for games released more than 45 days ago when there are enough recent reviews. Its customer-facing explanation does not disclose the exact threshold for “enough,” so a missing recent score does not reveal a specific review count. Steam’s introduction to reviews describes this availability condition.

Because the periods differ, a recent score can move while the lifetime score changes more gradually. That difference tells you that recommendation sentiment in the recent window is not the same as sentiment across the game’s entire history. It cannot, by itself, explain why.
#1 Best Overall
- A major update, technical problem, price or value concern, business practice, or community experience may recur in recent feedback.
- A sudden burst of reviews may relate to a review-bomb event; some review-bomb activity may be considered off-topic and excluded from the overall score.
- The audience represented by the displayed score may differ by language.
Steam says reviews can reflect the game itself as well as its value proposition, business practices, and community experience. A negative score therefore does not necessarily mean players object to gameplay alone. For an abrupt change, compare review dates and read both positive and negative written reviews to see whether commenters describe the same issue. Steamworks’ guidance on User Reviews discusses review content and off-topic review bombs.
How to judge whether reviews reflect a game’s current state
- Compare the time windows. Note whether you are looking at the lifetime score, the past-30-day score, or both. Treat a difference as a prompt to investigate rather than a verdict on what changed.
- Check the review volume and dates. Look at how many reviews are represented and how recently they were posted. Steam does not publish the exact recent-review threshold in its consumer explanation, so do not assume a particular sample size or statistical confidence.
- Check the language context. Since August 18, 2025, some games show a score based on reviews in the viewer’s language when enough reviews exist in that language. That score may not be a single global aggregate. Steam described the score as “basically a signal of how happy the overall community around a game was with their purchase, and a useful tool for potential customers to predict their happiness with that game as well.” Steam announced the language-based score change on August 18, 2025.
- Read the reviews behind the signal. Look for repeated, specific reports about the game’s current state, and distinguish those from comments about price, business practices, or community issues. Recent written reviews provide context that the score alone cannot.
- For a sudden swing, inspect timing and relevance. Check whether reviewers refer to a particular event and whether their comments concern the game or an unrelated issue. Steam’s API documentation says off-topic reviews are filtered by default in that retrieval interface; this should not be taken as a description of every store-page filter or display mode. Steamworks’ IUserReviewsService documentation describes that API behavior.
Are Steam reviews from keys counted?
Reviews from Steam purchases count toward the score. A review from an account that activated a key or accessed the game another way can still be readable on the store page without counting toward that aggregate. Steam also allows customers to review a product after playing it on Steam even when a purchase is not required to write a review; the purchase source determines whether it counts toward the score. Steamworks’ User Reviews documentation distinguishes visible reviews from score-eligible reviews.

This is why the number of visible written reviews and the score should not be treated as interchangeable. A historical Steam post estimated that its 2016 change to exclude key-activated reviews would alter the displayed category for about 14% of games at that time. That was a one-time historical estimate, not a current statistic about Steam games. Steam’s 2016 review-score update describes the change.
Can Steam review scores differ by language?
Yes. Since Steam’s August 18, 2025 change, some games display a score based on reviews in the viewer’s language when enough reviews in that language are available. Not every game necessarily shows a language-specific score, and Steam does not state the precise threshold in its announcement. A score seen by one player may therefore differ from the score shown to another player using a different language. Steam’s announcement of language-based review scores describes the change.

What the score can—and cannot—tell you
- It can show recommendation sentiment among reviews eligible for the displayed score, for the time period and language context shown.
- It cannot identify the cause of a change. A recent/lifetime gap does not prove that a patch, controversy, or fix produced it.
- It does not include every visible review. In particular, key-activated reviews may be readable without counting toward the score.
- It is not a complete account of the game. Reviews may address value, business practices, or community experience as well as gameplay and technical condition.
For people who want to inspect review records rather than rely only on the store summary, Steamworks’ review-list documentation describes recent, updated, and all/helpfulness sorting, as well as totals and positive/negative counts in the returned summary. Steamworks’ User Reviews – Get List documentation covers those fields.
