If Steam is the part of PC gaming you’re fed up with, there isn’t one service that replaces everything it does. Choose a different store if you want somewhere else to buy games, a subscription if you want catalog access, or a library manager if you mainly want fewer launchers to juggle. Those choices can work together—and none transfers your existing Steam purchases.
First, decide what you want to replace
Steam combines a storefront, game library and launcher with community and account features. Its alternatives do not all compete with it in the same way. GOG, Epic Games Store and itch.io sell games; PC Game Pass provides subscription access to a catalog; Playnite and Heroic help organize or launch games tied to supported services.
- Want another place to buy? Compare GOG, Epic Games Store and itch.io by the games you want and each title’s access terms.
- Want access to a rotating or changing catalog? Consider PC Game Pass as a subscription, not as a replacement for owning games.
- Want one library view? Look at Playnite or Heroic, while keeping in mind that a launcher does not combine storefronts or change their rules.
- Using Linux or Steam Deck? Check whether each specific game works on your setup; buying it outside Steam does not guarantee that it will run as smoothly.
Which storefront should you try?
There is no universally interchangeable catalog. Search for the particular games you care about, then check the seller’s current terms and the game’s requirements before buying. A purchase on another store does not migrate a Steam copy, its saves, or its entitlements.
GOG

Epic Games Store
Epic Games Store is another storefront for PC games. Its distribution page describes the store, but the games available and their terms should be checked individually. Epic Games Store distribution

itch.io is a marketplace with a broad range of games. Check the individual game page for platform support, download and access details rather than assuming every listing behaves like a conventional boxed or DRM-free purchase. About itch.io

Is PC Game Pass a Steam replacement?
Only if what you want is subscription access to a catalog. PC Game Pass is not a way to move or own your Steam library: access is tied to the subscription and the service’s current catalog and terms. Check the current regional offering and price on Xbox’s PC Game Pass page before subscribing; availability, catalog and pricing can change.
How to reduce launcher clutter
Playnite: organize a PC game library
Playnite describes itself as a game library manager. It can help bring supported libraries into an organizational layer, but it is not another store and does not replace the accounts or access rules attached to the games. See Playnite’s official site for the project’s current details.

Heroic: launch supported storefront libraries
Heroic’s project documentation lists support for Epic, GOG and Amazon accounts on Linux, Windows and macOS. On Linux, it also lists Proton and Wine options for running games. That can make it useful if you want to launch games from supported accounts without treating each storefront as a separate destination. Separate the purchase decision from the compatibility decision. Valve describes SteamOS as providing access to Steam and says Proton enables a large portion of Steam’s library on SteamOS. That does not establish that every game works, nor that a game bought from another storefront will behave identically. Valve’s SteamOS page

Heroic lists Linux support and Proton/Wine play options, but compatibility is still game-dependent. Anti-cheat can be a particular obstacle. Before buying for a Deck or Linux PC, check the game’s current compatibility status and the requirements of the specific store and launcher combination you plan to use.

A practical way to choose
- Write down what is bothering you. Is it buying games, subscription access, launcher clutter, account dependence, or getting games to run on Linux?
- Check the games, not just the store brand. Confirm the title is available where you intend to buy it and review its current platform and access terms.
- Choose the access model. Buy from another storefront for a separate purchase, or use PC Game Pass if subscription access suits you. Neither option transfers your Steam library.
- Add a manager only if organization is the problem. Check that the launcher supports the accounts you use, and expect to retain those accounts and their individual policies.
- Verify Linux or Deck compatibility title by title. Store availability and the presence of Proton or Wine support do not prove that a specific game will work, especially where anti-cheat is involved.
