Cloud Imperium Games (CIG) said attackers accessed some backup systems on 21 January 2026, including limited access to some users’ personal data. PC Gamer reported the notice on 3 March 2026, amid criticism that players were not told clearly or promptly. The available reporting establishes criticism of the disclosure’s timing and visibility, not that CIG deliberately concealed the attack.
Was Star Citizen hacked?
According to a notice from CIG reproduced by PC Gamer on 3 March 2026, the studio was targeted on 21 January 2026. CIG said the attack led to unauthorized access to some backup systems and limited access to some users’ personal data. The reported incident concerns those systems; it does not establish that any individual player’s RSI account was accessed.
CIG characterized the access as read-only and said no data was injected or modified. Those are the company’s reported findings, not independent forensic confirmation. The reporting reviewed does not establish how many users were affected.
What Star Citizen player data did CIG say was exposed?
CIG listed account metadata, contact details, usernames, dates of birth, and names among the information to which attackers had limited access. The reproduced notice did not define “metadata,” so its precise scope is unclear.

CIG said passwords and financial or payment information were not affected because they were not in the systems involved. This distinction is based on the company’s account of the incident; the available coverage does not provide independent verification of that finding.
When did CIG tell players about the breach?
CIG gave 21 January 2026 as the date of the attack. PC Gamer published its report reproducing the company’s notice on 3 March 2026. The dates establish that the public report came after the attack, but they do not by themselves establish when every player received notice.

PC Gamer reported that the notice was not linked from the RSI front page and, citing player posts, that players were not emailed. It said the notice reportedly appeared as a pop-up when users logged in, and that players’ reports to The Register helped bring the incident wider attention. These distribution details and the criticism of the notice’s visibility are reported accounts; the available evidence does not establish CIG’s intent, a legal violation, or a definitive disclosure deadline.
At the time of the notice, CIG said it was monitoring for public release of the accessed data and had no indication that it had been released. That was a time-bound statement by the company, not confirmation of the data’s status today.

What should Star Citizen players do now?
The breach report is not, on its own, evidence that a particular RSI account was taken over. If you see signs of account access you did not authorize, use RSI’s support and recovery process.
Secure your RSI account
- Enable multi-factor authentication. RSI says it offers free email two-step authentication and a free mobile authenticator app, and recommends MFA in its account security guidance.
- Use a strong, unique password for RSI; do not reuse it on other services or share your credentials.
- Keep your operating system and security software current.
If you suspect an account takeover
RSI lists unexpected pledge-gifting emails, password-change messages you did not request, and failed account recovery as possible signs of compromise. Its compromised-account instructions direct users to contact Player Relations and follow the account-recovery process.
