Steam Suffered a Major Outage on Christmas Eve 2025—Here’s What Happened

Steam’s Christmas Eve 2025 outage disrupted the Store, Community, APIs, mobile access and some online games before gradually recovering. Here’s what users could still play and how to prepare for the next disruption.

Steam experienced a major service disruption on Wednesday, December 24, 2025, leaving many users unable to load the Store, Community pages, mobile apps, Web APIs and some online game services. Recovery began that afternoon, and Steam appeared broadly restored by late December 24 or the early hours of December 25.

This was a broad, temporary outage—not proof that every Steam feature or every locally installed game stopped working. Whether a game remained playable depended on its authentication, DRM, launcher and online-service requirements.

Steam outage timeline

All times below are approximate and in Eastern Time, based on third-party monitoring and contemporaneous reporting.

  • About 1 p.m., December 24: Reports of Steam service problems began.
  • About 1:15 p.m.: Downdetector recorded more than 6,000 reports. That figure represents outage reports, not a confirmed number of affected users.
  • About 4 p.m.: Recovery was beginning, although some services remained unreliable.
  • About 6 p.m.: The main PC, mobile and Mac clients were broadly functional, with intermittent errors and sluggish performance still reported.
  • About 4 a.m. on December 25: Services appeared to be operating normally.

The incident was especially disruptive because it happened on Christmas Eve, when many people were receiving games and had time to play them. The exact start and restoration times should be treated as estimates rather than a precise platform-wide switch.

What was affected?

Users reported a range of symptoms rather than one universal failure:

  • Steam Store pages failed to load, preventing browsing, purchases and some downloads.
  • Account, library and login information was unavailable or inconsistent for some users.
  • Steam Community features and mobile access experienced problems.
  • Steam Web APIs were unavailable or degraded.
  • Matchmaking, profiles, inventories, cloud-connected features and other online functions could fail.
  • Some Valve online-game services, including reported issues affecting Team Fortress 2, Dota 2 and Counter-Strike 2, were disrupted.
  • Some users could not launch games because the Steam client could not complete an online authentication or license check.

These reports support describing the event as a major Steam outage or partial service disruption. They do not establish that every client, game or Steam feature was offline simultaneously.

Why could some single-player games still be affected?

“Single-player” describes how a game is played, not necessarily how it authenticates. A title can be designed for solo play while still depending on several online components:

  • Steam authentication: The client may need to validate the account or license.
  • Third-party DRM: A publisher’s launcher or authentication server may be required.
  • First-run setup: Installation steps, redistributables, shader preparation or initial activation may not be complete.
  • Updates: A game can appear installed but fail to launch if Steam or the title requires an update.
  • Cloud services: Cloud saves, achievements, inventories and synchronization can be unavailable even when the game itself launches.

That is why one installed single-player game may work during an outage while another refuses to start. A Steam Deck follows the same general rule: a locally installed, compatible title may work offline, but the device does not remove Steam authentication or a game’s own online requirements.

Can you play Steam games offline?

Yes, but Steam’s Offline Mode works most reliably when prepared before a disruption.

  1. Start Steam while you still have an internet connection.
  2. Make sure the game is fully updated.
  3. Launch it once online so first-run setup and required components finish.
  4. Save your account credentials when Steam offers that option.
  5. Select Steam > Go Offline before losing access to Steam’s services.

Steam warns that compatible games can be played without an active Steam Network connection, but not every title supports this. Always-online games, multiplayer games and games dependent on external launchers may still fail. Cloud saves will not synchronize while disconnected, and achievements, inventories, purchases, downloads and community features may be unavailable.

If Steam is already down and Offline Mode was not prepared, there may be no workaround: Steam’s support documentation says the client can require an online login and that this requirement cannot be bypassed without reconnecting. Repeatedly logging out during an outage can therefore make access more difficult.

What Valve said about the outage

The reporting reviewed for this incident did not identify a public explanation from Valve. Steam’s official X and Bluesky accounts reportedly did not acknowledge the disruption, and the precise technical cause was not established.

There is no verified evidence in the available reporting that the outage was caused by a cyberattack, DDoS attack, holiday traffic, scheduled maintenance, a cloud failure or a particular software deployment. Christmas traffic is a plausible theory, but it remains speculation unless Valve provides supporting information.

What to do during the next Steam outage

  1. Check whether the problem is widespread. Look at Steam’s service and support pages, Downdetector and reports from other users. If the Store, Community, mobile app and library fail at the same time, the problem is more likely platform-wide.
  2. Check your own connection. If only your household is affected, follow Steam’s network troubleshooting guidance, including checks for the router, firewall, background software and ISP.
  3. Do not reinstall Steam. Reinstalling will not repair a confirmed backend outage and may create additional setup or authentication work.
  4. Avoid unnecessary logouts or account changes. They can remove the conditions needed for Offline Mode.
  5. Use Offline Mode only if it was prepared beforehand. Do not expect multiplayer, external launchers, updates or cloud synchronization to work.
  6. Protect local saves. After service returns, check cloud-save status before replacing a local save or accepting an unintended synchronization result.

Steam also provides guidance for the separate “servers unavailable or too busy” message at Steam Support.

Valve Steam Deck 1TB Upgraded Handheld Gaming Console with Carring case, 1280 x 800 OLED Display Silicone Soft Cover Protector & Joystic Cap & Tempered Glass Film Bundle
  • Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
  • Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
  • Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
  • Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
  • The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.

The practical lesson

The December 24 outage showed why platform access and game access are not the same thing. Steam’s Store, authentication, APIs, mobile services and online games can be disrupted while some locally installed titles continue to launch. Conversely, a game labeled single-player can remain dependent on Steam, a publisher launcher or third-party DRM.

For travel, holidays or unreliable internet, keep at least one fully updated, offline-capable game installed and test it in Offline Mode in advance. If independence from platform logins is a priority, DRM-light or DRM-free stores such as GOG may be worth considering—but each game’s own requirements still need to be checked.
