Valve ended Steam client support for Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 on January 1, 2024. That ended supported client updates and technical assistance for issues tied to those operating systems; it did not mean every Steam installation stopped launching that day.
What Valve’s cutoff means
Valve’s support FAQ says Steam support for Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 ended January 1, 2024. In an April 26, 2023 client update, Valve specified that support would end at 10 a.m. Valve’s announcement names all three affected Windows versions.
- Client updates: These Windows versions no longer receive supported Steam client updates.
- Technical help: Valve says Steam Support cannot provide technical assistance for problems tied to the unsupported operating systems.
- Access: The cutoff was not an announcement that Steam would block every affected user immediately.
Valve expected the client and games on the older systems to continue running for some time without updates, while warning it could not guarantee continued functionality after January 1, 2024. That is Valve’s expectation, not a guarantee for any particular computer or game. See the Steam Support FAQ.
Will Steam stop running, or just stop receiving updates?
Supported updates and operating-system-specific technical assistance ended. Whether an existing Steam installation continues to run is a separate question: Valve said it might keep working for some time, but did not guarantee that it would. The notice therefore does not establish a universal shutdown date for installations already on Windows 7, 8, or 8.1.

Why Valve ended support
Valve’s FAQ places its decision in the context of Microsoft ending security updates and technical support for Windows 7 in January 2020 and Windows 8.1 in January 2023. Those are the dates Valve gives; the FAQ does not specify a precise day or give a Windows 8 end date in that statement.
Do not confuse the cutoff with Steam’s 32-bit policy
The 2024 cutoff concerns particular Windows versions, regardless of whether a system is 32-bit or 64-bit. Separately, Valve says support for systems running 32-bit Windows ended on January 1, 2026. That is an architecture-based policy, not an extension or replacement of the Windows 7/8/8.1 version cutoff. Valve’s separate 32-bit Windows FAQ covers that change.

What affected players can do
If Steam still launches on an older system, that does not restore official support or guarantee future compatibility. Moving to a supported Windows installation may be an option, but whether a specific PC can run a newer operating system depends on that computer. Valve’s notices do not specify an edition to install or recommend a particular computer or upgrade product.
