To keep an Epic Games Store giveaway, claim it before the deadline shown on the offer page; you do not need to download it before the offer ends. Steam uses several different kinds of “free” offers: a free-to-play game is free to acquire on an ongoing basis, a Free Weekend is temporary access, and Free to Keep is a time-limited giveaway or 100% discount.
What “free” means on Steam and Epic
The key difference is the type of offer—not simply which store lists the game. “Free to play” describes an ongoing access model; “free to keep” describes a limited-time opportunity to add a license to your library. A temporary trial or weekend offer is different from both.

How Steam’s free games work
Free-to-play games
Steam says free-to-play games can be downloaded and played without a subscription or credit card. You need Steam Wallet funds only if you choose to buy in-game items or content, and individual games can set their own account restrictions. Those details mean “free-to-play” does not guarantee that every feature or item is free. See Steam Support’s explanation of free-to-play games.
Free Weekends and Free to Keep
Steamworks distinguishes a Free Weekend, which grants a temporary license, from a Free to Keep promotion, which is a limited-time giveaway or 100% discount. A Free Weekend should not be treated as a permanent library claim. The terminology is documented in Valve’s Steamworks documentation.

A Steam library shortcut is not a claim
You can add a non-Steam game shortcut to the Steam client, but that does not give Steam an ownership record for the game or let Steam download its updates. A visible entry in the client is not proof that you claimed a Steam license; see Steam Support’s guidance on non-Steam games.
How Epic Games Store giveaways work
Epic says a game in a free promotion must be claimed during the displayed period to be added to your library. The important action is completing the claim while the offer is active; the cited support guidance does not require you to download or install the game before the deadline. Once a normal free-promotion game has been claimed, Epic says it remains in the library permanently. - Open the Epic Games Store Free Games page and check the offer’s countdown or end date. The lineup and deadlines change, so use the live listing rather than a past promotion announcement.
- While the offer is active, sign in to the Epic account you want to use and complete the claim. A game advertised as free is not added to your library just because you viewed the page.
- Check your Epic library while signed in to that same account. If the title is missing, first verify the account; Epic lists being signed into the wrong account as a common cause.
- Download the game when convenient. Downloading is separate from claiming, so it does not need to be completed before the giveaway deadline.
Epic’s support guidance makes an exception for limited-time versions such as beta or press builds: those do not grant permanent access in the same way as a normal free-promotion claim. Check the specific listing’s terms rather than assuming every temporary build is a standard giveaway.
Does “keep it forever” mean you own the game?
No. “Permanently in your library” means the account retains a platform entitlement to the claimed promotion game; it is not outright ownership of the game or a promise that it will remain playable under every future circumstance. Epic’s End User License Agreement describes adding software to a library as a transaction and grants use under its terms. License terms, account status, title-specific limits, online requirements, and the continued operation of required services can all affect access or play.

Epic’s live storefront separates “Free Giveaway” listings from “Free to Play” titles and describes a weekly PC promotion. The active titles, exact deadlines, eligibility, cadence, and any conditions can change; confirm them on the current Free Games page. Steam’s store and each game’s listing likewise determine which kind of free offer applies.
