Nintendo Switch 2 has a sharper, larger handheld screen and supports higher-resolution output when docked, but its maximum figures are not a promise that every game runs at those settings. Handheld and tabletop play top out at 1080p; TV mode supports up to 4K at 60 fps or up to 120 fps at 1080p or 1440p. Battery life is estimated at 2–6.5 hours, and game storage expansion requires a microSD Express card.
What the display and resolution specifications mean
Handheld and tabletop play
The built-in display is a 7.9-inch LCD with 1920×1080 resolution, HDR10 support and variable refresh rate (VRR) up to 120 Hz. Handheld and tabletop output maxes out at 1080p. The larger, higher-resolution panel can show more detail than a lower-resolution screen, but a 120 Hz refresh capability does not mean a game renders 120 frames per second. Actual resolution, HDR support and frame rate depend on the game.

Nintendo lists these display specifications on its Switch 2 technical specifications page.
TV mode: 4K or higher frame rates
With the dock connected to a compatible television or monitor, Nintendo lists output up to 3840×2160 (4K) at 60 fps, or up to 120 fps at 1920×1080 or 2560×1440. These are alternative output ceilings: the specification does not mean Switch 2 runs games at 4K and 120 fps. Nintendo says 4K and HDR are available only in supported games and require a compatible display; 4K output is capped at 60 fps.

Those are supported output targets, not a guarantee that a particular game renders at the maximum resolution or frame rate. For a game-specific expectation, check its features rather than treating the console’s maximum output as a performance promise. See Nintendo UK’s explanation of Switch 2 features.
How long does Switch 2 battery last?
Nintendo estimates approximately 2 to 6.5 hours per charge. It explicitly says battery life depends on the games played and usage conditions, so the range is a manufacturer estimate, not a measured result for every game or a guaranteed minimum. Brightness, wireless use and the demands of a particular game can make real play time differ.
The built-in 5220 mAh battery is not user-removable. Nintendo estimates charging takes about three hours when the system is asleep. These battery and charging figures are manufacturer specifications; Nintendo provides them on its technical specifications page.
How much storage is available, and what SD card does Switch 2 use?
Switch 2 includes 256 GB of UFS internal storage, with some space reserved for system use, so the full stated capacity is not available for games and other user data. To expand game storage, you need a microSD Express card. Nintendo lists support for cards up to 2 TB and says a system update and internet connection are required to use them.

A conventional microSD card is not a substitute for game storage on Switch 2. Nintendo says existing conventional microSD cards can be used only to copy screenshots and videos from an original Switch. The distinction matters if you already own a card: look specifically for microSD Express when choosing expansion storage. Details are in Nintendo’s technical specifications and compatibility guidance.
Can Switch 2 play original Switch games and use its accessories?
Nintendo says Switch 2 accepts both Switch 2 and original Nintendo Switch game cards, and many existing games and account features carry over. Compatibility is not universal, however: individual games and accessories can have exceptions. Check Nintendo’s current game and accessory compatibility information for the specific title or item you plan to use.
- The original Nintendo Switch dock is not compatible with Switch 2.
- The original Switch AC adapter can charge Switch 2 directly, but it cannot power the system in TV mode.
- Original Switch Joy-Con controllers can pair wirelessly, subject to compatibility with the game being played.
- Some Joy-Con-specific grips, straps and other accessories do not fit Joy-Con 2.
What do the new controls, GameChat and accessibility features add?
Mouse control
Each Joy-Con 2 has a mouse sensor and can be used as a mouse on a suitable surface, including a table. This is useful only in games that support mouse input; it is not a system-wide replacement for standard controls. Nintendo also specifies an upper USB-C port that allows charging during tabletop play and can connect a compatible camera.
GameChat
GameChat is started with the C Button on the right Joy-Con 2. Nintendo describes voice chat for up to 12 people, with up to four people able to share screens and use video chat. Video chat requires a compatible USB camera. Children under 16 require parent or guardian approval, according to Nintendo’s announcement.

Nintendo’s April 2025 announcement said GameChat would require a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership after a free-access period ending March 31, 2026. Because that date has passed, check Nintendo’s live service information for current subscription terms rather than assuming the earlier announcement describes today’s access rules. The feature details are in Nintendo’s April 2025 announcement.
Accessibility and voice features
Nintendo lists adjustable font size and colour tone, text verbalization and button customization among Switch 2’s accessibility options. The system also has a built-in microphone with noise cancellation, echo cancellation and automatic gain control. These are feature descriptions; they do not establish how well a setting will work in every game or for every player.

The most useful comparison is not a single headline number but how you expect to play. Before buying, consider:
- Mostly handheld: whether a 7.9-inch 1080p screen and the estimated 2–6.5-hour battery range suit your play sessions.
- Mostly on a TV: whether your display supports the resolution and HDR you want, and whether the games you play support those features. The listed 4K/60 and 1080p-or-1440p/120 targets are separate options.
- Keeping an existing library: whether your specific Switch games and accessories appear as compatible in Nintendo’s current support information.
- Installing many games: how much internal space you need beyond the system-reserved portion, and whether you are prepared to use microSD Express for expansion.
- Trying new play styles: whether your games support Joy-Con 2 mouse input, and whether you need a compatible camera for video chat.
Nintendo’s hardware specifications describe capabilities, not independent benchmark results. The actual experience can vary by game, display, settings and use.
