Valve’s current Steamworks schedule gives the event dates as December 17, 2026, through January 4, 2027. Check Valve’s event schedule for any changes before planning a purchase; the listed end date is January 4, 2027.

Steam’s seasonal sales are broad events, but participation does not mean every game will be discounted. Valve says released games can take part in seasonal sales, and a game must have been released at least 30 days before an event to be eligible for a discount. Eligibility is not a promise of a sale price. Valve’s seasonal-sale and discount guidance explains the rules.
What are the best Steam Winter Sale deals?
No individual Winter Sale 2026 deals are confirmed yet. Steam prices and discounts for the event will only be known when the live listings appear, and prices can vary by region. Naming 20 games as discounted now—or assigning them prices or percentages off—would be speculation. The useful shortlist will be one checked against the store during the sale, with each price tied to its region and check date.

For context, PC Gamer reported that SteamDB counted 44,048 games under $5 in the Autumn Sale on October 1, 2026. That is a third-party count for a specific sale, not a Valve statistic or a forecast of Winter Sale inventory. The scale of that low-price pool shows why a price alone is a poor way to choose. PC Gamer’s Autumn Sale report describes narrowing the results with filters such as genre, features, release date, rating, and review count.
How to choose games worth buying
Start with what you will actually play
Make a shortlist around your preferred genres and features before browsing the sale. Check whether a game is single-player, co-op, or multiplayer, and whether it requires another game, specific DLC, a controller, or hardware you do not have. Steam tags and store descriptions can help identify fit, but read the listing for the exact edition and requirements.

Judge the price alongside the game
Compare the regional price you would pay with the game’s content, your interest, and the time you expect to play it. A large percentage discount does not make an unwanted game a good buy. Treat review scores as one signal, and read the rating and review count together with the comments and the game’s age.
Check bundles and expansions before checkout
Compare a bundle’s contents and price with buying only the game or add-on you want, taking account of anything already in your Steam library. An apparent bundle saving may not help if it includes titles you would not otherwise buy. PC Gamer also recommends checking publisher bundles and DLC when comparing sale options. Buy for your plans, not just the countdown
If you are unlikely to play a game soon, it can be sensible to leave it on your wishlist rather than buy it solely because it is discounted. Another sale may provide a later opportunity, but its timing and price are not guaranteed. Valve says a discount of 20% or more can trigger an email notification for users who have wishlisted a game and opted into those notifications; that alert is not a promise of a particular discount. Valve’s discount documentation describes the notification rule.

- Open the game’s live Steam store listing and check its current price in your regional currency. Do not rely on an old search result or a price quoted for another region.
- Confirm whether the offer is for the base game, a bundle, or DLC. Read the included items and any ownership requirements.
- Record the discount and the time or date you checked it. If you compare against a historical low, verify that history with a dedicated price-history source and identify that source separately.
- Check the listing’s genre, features, system requirements, and Steam Deck status before making a compatibility claim. Use the current game listing or another reliable current source for those details.
- Review the displayed player rating and review count together, then weigh them against your own genre and play-style preferences.
- Build a 20-game shortlist from those verified listings and rank it by value, fit, reception, expected play value, and any important caveat—not percentage off alone.
Valve says discounted games may appear in Steam store specials based on factors including tags, popularity, and recommendations. You can also use your wishlist and browse themed storefront sections to find candidates, then verify each offer on its own listing.
