If a Steam game says steam_api64.dll is missing, do not download the DLL from a random website or copy it into Windows. The file belongs to the game installation. Restart your PC, open Steam, then use Library → right-click the game → Properties… → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files. If the file disappears again, check your antivirus quarantine and exclusion settings.
What the steam_api64.dll error means
steam_api64.dll is a game-installation file used by a 64-bit Steam game. It is not a Windows system DLL and normally should not be installed in C:WindowsSystem32.

Steam identifies missing game files as commonly caused by antivirus software quarantining or deleting them, although an incomplete download or corrupted installation can also be responsible. See Steam’s missing-executable guidance.

Fix 1: Verify the game files in Steam
- Restart your computer.
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click the affected game and choose Properties…. You can also open the game’s Library page and select the gear icon on the far right.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to finish checking the installation, then launch the game again.
Steam may take several minutes to reacquire missing or damaged files. Do not run verification while another system-intensive operation is running, such as a virus scan or disk defragmentation, and do not verify multiple games at the same time. What if Steam says files failed to validate?
A message saying that one or more files failed to verify does not automatically mean the repair failed. Steam says this is normal for many games because some files are local configuration files that are intentionally not replaced. Try launching the game before repeating the process.
Fix 2: Check your antivirus quarantine
If verification restores steam_api64.dll but the file disappears again, your antivirus software is probably removing it after Steam reacquires it. Open your antivirus product and check its quarantine, detection history, or protection log for the affected game.
If the file was detected, use the product’s option to mark it as safe or restore it only when you are confident the game was installed through a legitimate source. Then add the affected game folder to the antivirus product’s exclusions or allowlist. Some security products also provide a Game Mode that can prevent interference while you play.

Menu names differ between antivirus products, so there is no single universal Windows security path that applies to every installation. Exclude only the affected game folder rather than disabling protection across the entire computer. Steam recommends inspecting antivirus detections and marking the game files safe or excluding the game folder in its support guidance.
After changing the antivirus settings, run Verify integrity of game files again so Steam can reacquire the missing file.
Do not download steam_api64.dll from a DLL website
Generic DLL-download websites are not Steam’s supported distribution channel. A replacement may be malicious, modified, or incompatible with the specific game build. Copying it into C:WindowsSystem32 is also the wrong repair because steam_api64.dll belongs in the game’s installation folder.

Use Steam’s verification process to obtain the file that matches the installed game. If you obtained the game from a source other than Steam, use that platform’s official repair or reinstall process instead.

Usually, no. Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable supplies Microsoft C and C++ runtime libraries; it does not supply or repair steam_api64.dll. Steam file verification is the relevant fix when this specific Steam API file is missing.
Visual C++ Redistributable is relevant when the error names runtime files such as MSVCP140.dll or VCRUNTIME140.dll. Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable page lists architecture-specific X86, X64, and ARM64 downloads. The package architecture must match the application’s target architecture.

Microsoft’s current v14 package supports applications built with Visual Studio 2017, 2019, 2022, or 2026. Older games can still require older redistributables, including Visual C++ 2013 or earlier, because those packages remain installed side by side rather than being replaced automatically. Installing a redistributable should therefore be based on the error message or the game’s documented requirements—not used as a universal solution for every missing DLL.
When reinstalling Steam is not the first step
Reinstalling the entire Steam client is not the standard first response to this error. Steam’s current troubleshooting prioritizes checking antivirus interference and verifying the individual game’s files. Reinstalling Steam may add unnecessary work without addressing an antivirus product that continues to quarantine the file.

Start with verification and antivirus inspection. Consider broader troubleshooting only if those steps do not restore and retain the file.
If the error remains
If antivirus software is not responsible and verification does not restore steam_api64.dll, or the file continues to vanish, contact Steam Support rather than downloading an unofficial replacement.
Steam’s guidance asks for an uncropped screenshot of the error, a System Report, and a list of programs removed during its interference troubleshooting process. Include the game name, the exact error text, and what happened after verification so support can distinguish a damaged installation from security-software interference.
