steamclient64.dll is a 64-bit Windows DLL used by the Steam client and Steamworks-based games or dedicated servers. If it is missing, blocked, corrupted, or mismatched, repair the official Steam or game installation that supplied it instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
The correct first fix depends on where the error appears: reinstall Steam over its existing folder if Steam-wide files are damaged, verify one game if only that game fails, and investigate antivirus quarantine before restoring anything.

What this file actually does
steamclient64.dll is part of the Steam client and Steamworks ecosystem. It is not a Windows system DLL, Microsoft runtime, graphics driver, DirectX component, or .NET file.

That file acts as the application-facing Steamworks API layer. When the API starts, it locates the running Steam client and loads the appropriate Steam client library from the Steam installation. Those two files are related, but they are not interchangeable.

Some dedicated servers use Steamworks redistributable files because they may not have a normal Steam client running interactively. Developers can obtain matching binaries through the official Steamworks SDK or dedicated-server redistributable packages. That is a deployment task, not a safe consumer repair method.
A normal Steam installation commonly contains the file here:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamclient64.dll
Your path may differ if Steam was installed on another drive or into a custom folder. The important detail is that the file belongs with the Steam installation or the official Steamworks package that expects it.
Do not treat old version or size lists as current specifications. Steam client and Steamworks builds change, and Valve does not publish one universal end-user version, size, or checksum target for every copy of steamclient64.dll.
The file should not normally be registered with regsvr32. Steam loads it as a runtime library, not as a COM or ActiveX component that exposes a DllRegisterServer entry point.
Error messages and what they usually mean
| Error or symptom | What it usually indicates | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| “The program can’t start because steamclient64.dll is missing from your computer” | The program cannot find the DLL in an expected search location | Repair Steam or verify the affected game |
| “The code execution cannot proceed because steamclient64.dll was not found” | Windows could not locate the requested module | Check the full path, then repair the owning installation |
| “Unable to load library steamclient64.dll” | The file may be absent, corrupt, incompatible, or missing a dependency | Verify the game or redeploy matching Steamworks files |
| “Untrusted system file” followed by a path | Anti-cheat rejected the file’s integrity, location, signature, or version | Update Steam, remove modifications, verify the game, and inspect antivirus events |
| “The procedure entry point … could not be located” | The DLL was found, but it does not match the executable or related libraries | Replace the complete matching Steamworks or game package |
| “steamclient64.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error” | Generic loader failure involving the DLL, a dependency, or architecture | Check the named dependency and confirm 32-bit versus 64-bit compatibility |
Read the complete path in the message before changing anything. A file under the Steam root points toward a client repair. A file under one game’s directory points toward that game. A file under a server, mod, injector, or network-share directory may belong to a separate deployment.
Fixes in the right order
1. Determine whether Steam or one game is failing
Start Steam normally.
If Steam itself will not open, several games fail, or the file is missing from the Steam directory, repair the Steam client first.
If Steam opens and only one game fails, verify that game before reinstalling Steam or Windows.
If the error comes from a dedicated server, mod loader, Unreal-based package, or manually copied game deployment, suspect mismatched Steamworks files rather than a damaged Windows installation.
Also note the path in the error:
- Steam root: commonly
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam - Game folder: the installation directory for one title
- Dedicated-server folder: a separate server deployment
- Unexpected folder: a temporary directory, mod folder, network share, or unofficial package
Windows searches several locations when loading a DLL. The application directory, Steam directory, current working directory, and Windows system directories can all affect which copy is found. Microsoft documents this behavior in its guidance on DLL search order and DLL security.
A copy existing somewhere on the disk does not prove that the program can use it. It may be in the wrong directory, have the wrong architecture, or belong to a different build.
2. Reinstall Steam over the existing installation
This is the safest general repair when the missing file belongs to the Steam client.
Do not uninstall Steam first. Uninstalling can remove installed game content, local saves, and other data depending on how the installation is arranged. If you need to protect local data, back up the steamapps and userdata folders and any non-cloud saves before proceeding.
Follow these steps:
- Exit Steam.
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - In the process list, close any remaining
Steam,Steam Client WebHelper, or related Steam processes. - Download the installer from Steam’s official installation page.
- Run the installer.
- Select the existing Steam installation directory when prompted.
- Allow the installer to update or replace the client files.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Steam and test the game again.
The usual default directory is C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam, but use the actual folder shown by your Steam shortcut or installation. Reinstalling into the existing location is intended to preserve installed games, while uninstalling first has different consequences.
Why this works: the Steam installer restores a coherent set of client files instead of supplying only one DLL. A manually copied steamclient64.dll can still fail if related Steam libraries, services, or client files come from a different build.

If Steam reports that games are missing after the repair, open Steam and select Steam → Settings → Storage. Add the library folder that contains the existing steamapps directory, then restart Steam.

If Steam is installed on an external drive, network share, or removable disk, test with the Steam client and affected game on an internal local drive. A disconnected drive or interrupted write can damage installation information and leave files apparently missing.
3. Verify the affected game
Use this path when Steam opens normally but only one game produces the error.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Steam.
- Select
Library. - Right-click the affected game.
- Select
Properties. - Open
Installed Files. - Select
Verify integrity of game files. - Wait for Steam to finish.
- Restart the game.
Steam compares the local installation with the files expected for that game and reacquires missing or damaged files. This is especially useful after a failed update, forced shutdown, drive disconnect, or antivirus quarantine.
Recommended Free Tools
One or more files may fail verification because some local configuration files are intentionally not replaced. That result is not automatically proof that the repair failed. Test the game after verification.
If the game still fails:
- Remove unofficial mods, injectors, loaders, reshade packages, and manually copied DLLs.
- Verify the files again.
- Repair the game’s anti-cheat component if its publisher provides a repair utility.
- Reinstall the game if Steam cannot reacquire the damaged files.
If the error names a DLL inside the game directory rather than the Steam directory, reinstalling Steam may not change anything. The game’s own installation is the correct repair target.
4. Check antivirus quarantine before restoring anything
Security software can quarantine or block Steam files and game executables. It can also correctly detect a modified or malicious file, so the filename alone is not enough to decide whether restoration is safe.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start.
- Type
Windows Security. - Open
Virus & threat protection. - Select
Protection history. - Expand the relevant event.
- Check the exact detection name.
- Check the full path of the affected file.
- Note whether the file came from the legitimate Steam folder, a game folder, a mod directory, or an unexpected location.
Microsoft explains Protection History and its restore or allow behavior in its Windows Security Protection History documentation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not automatically select Allow or Restore. Keep the file quarantined if its origin is uncertain. Run a full scan, remove unofficial packages, and reinstall the official Steam or game files.
Restoration is only reasonable when all of the following are true:
- The file is in the legitimate Steam or game installation.
- The detection has been investigated.
- The installation came from an official source.
- The file is not part of a crack, cheat, injector, or modified package.
- The security software or publisher confirms the detection is a false positive.
Avoid broad antivirus exclusions. If a security vendor or game publisher provides a narrowly scoped exclusion for a known clean installation, follow that vendor’s instructions and keep the exclusion limited.
If the file disappears again immediately after reinstalling, the antivirus event is important evidence. Do not keep copying the DLL back into the folder without identifying what is removing it.
5. Handle “Untrusted system file” and anti-cheat failures
An “Untrusted system file” message does not by itself prove malware. Anti-cheat software can reject a file because it was changed, is stale, is in an unexpected location, does not match the current game build, or was loaded from a modified deployment.
Use this order:
- Exit the game and Steam.
- Remove mods, injectors, loaders, and overlays that alter the game process.
- Start Steam and allow it to update.
- Verify the game through
Library → right-click the game → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files. - Repair the game’s Easy Anti-Cheat installation if the game includes that option.
- Check Windows Security Protection History.
- Repair the Steam service if protected Steam games generally fail.
- Contact the game publisher if a clean, official installation continues to be rejected.
A file on a network share or a drive that disconnects during loading can also trigger integrity failures. Move the game to a local internal drive for testing.
Do not solve an anti-cheat rejection by downloading a different copy of steamclient64.dll. Anti-cheat systems commonly check the relationship between files, their location, and their integrity. Replacing one DLL can create a new mismatch.
6. Clear Steam’s download cache
A damaged download cache can prevent Steam from completing updates or reacquiring a missing file.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Open Steam.
- Select
Steamin the upper-left menu. - Open
Settings. - Select
Downloads. - Choose
Clear Download Cache. - Confirm the action.
- Sign in again when Steam restarts.
- Retry the Steam client update or game verification.
Clearing the cache does not remove installed games, but it signs you out and requires another login. If the file is still missing, reinstall Steam over the existing folder after clearing the cache.

- Close Steam completely.
- Press
Windows+R. - Enter the following command, changing the path if Steam is installed elsewhere:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\bin\SteamService.exe" /repair
- Press
Enter. - Approve the administrator prompt.
- Wait for the repair to finish.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Steam and test the affected game.
This repairs the Steam service rather than replacing the DLL. It will not fix a game that contains an incompatible or manually assembled Steamworks deployment.

Microsoft Visual C++ errors
If the error names VCRUNTIME140.dll, VCRUNTIME140_1.dll, MSVCP140.dll, or another Visual C++ runtime, install or repair the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable from Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ downloads.
Use the architecture required by the failing program:
- A 64-bit game normally requires the x64 package.
- A 32-bit game on 64-bit Windows may require the x86 package.
- Some systems need both because they run both 32-bit and 64-bit applications.
Installing Visual C++ does not replace steamclient64.dll. Only install it when the error or the game’s official installer identifies a Visual C++ runtime.

Modern DirectX included with Windows does not always include older optional components used by older games. Again, DirectX repairs a DirectX dependency, not the Steam client DLL.
.NET errors
If the message names a .NET runtime or framework, install the matching package using Microsoft’s official .NET Windows installation guidance.
Do not install .NET merely because steamclient64.dll is missing. Steamworks files and .NET files serve different purposes.

Using Windows Features
Windows Features can enable older Windows components when an application specifically requests them.
- Open Start.
- Type
Turn Windows features on or off. - Open the matching Control Panel result.
- Select
.NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0)only if the application explicitly requires it. - Select

- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
Do not enable random features to repair steamclient64.dll. Windows Features cannot recreate a missing Steam client file.
9. Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
The 64 in steamclient64.dll identifies a 64-bit library. A 64-bit process needs a compatible 64-bit DLL. A 32-bit process cannot use this file as a substitute for its 32-bit Steamworks counterpart.
Architecture problems commonly appear after:
- Copying files from another game.
- Installing an old server package beside a newer Steam client.
- Using a 32-bit mod loader with a 64-bit game.
- Mixing x86 and x64 redistributables.
- Deploying files manually from a different computer.
Do not copy a DLL between System32, SysWOW64, Steam folders, and game folders to experiment. The names of those Windows directories are confusing on 64-bit Windows, and moving files between them can create additional conflicts.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo identify the failing program’s architecture, check the game or server documentation, its executable properties, or the publisher’s support instructions. For a developer deployment, use the exact architecture and file set supplied for that server or application.

10. Use Device Manager only when the error identifies a driver
steamclient64.dll is not a hardware driver, and Device Manager will not restore it. Do not update graphics, audio, chipset, or network drivers as the first response to a Steam DLL error.
Driver work is relevant when the same launch failure also names a display, audio, network, storage, or anti-cheat driver, or when Windows shows device errors.
To check:
- Press
Windows+X. - Open
Device Manager. - Expand the relevant category, such as
Display adapters,Sound, video and game controllers,Network adapters, orStorage controllers. - Right-click the affected device.
- Select
Properties. - Check the
Device statusmessage underGeneral. - Open the
Drivertab. - Use
Update Driverand selectSearch automatically for drivers, or install the driver package from the hardware manufacturer. - Restart Windows.
Do not remove a working device driver just because steamclient64.dll is missing. A driver update is a separate repair path.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting versions and guessing which of dozens of drivers is stale: its free scan shows exactly which drivers need attention, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional and does not replace repairing Steam when steamclient64.dll itself is missing.
11. Repair Windows components only when Windows has broader problems
steamclient64.dll is not a protected Windows component, so SFC and DISM are not the primary way to restore it. Use them when Windows itself shows broader corruption, failed updates, damaged system applications, or multiple unrelated system errors.
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click it.
- Select
Run as administrator. - Run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth - Wait for DISM to complete.
- Run
sfc /scannow - Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows files. Neither command normally restores a third-party Steam DLL.
Microsoft’s complete procedure is documented in System File Checker and DISM guidance.
Outbyte PC Repair can help when repeated manual SFC and DISM runs leave you guessing what changed: its free scan shows exactly what it finds, while repair is handled by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling Steam remains the definitive repair when the missing file belongs to Steam.
If SFC reports that it found corrupt files but could not repair some of them, restart and run the DISM and SFC sequence again. If Windows remains unstable, investigate disk health and pending updates instead of repeatedly copying Steam DLLs.
12. Install pending Windows updates
Windows Update is not the normal distributor of steamclient64.dll, but updates can help when the problem began alongside broader Windows compatibility or servicing failures.
- Open Start.
- Select
Settings. - Open
Windows Update. - Select
Check for updates. - Install available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Test Steam again.
Use Microsoft’s Windows Update installation guidance if the update process itself fails.
Do not expect Windows Update to download a missing Steam DLL. The Steam installer or the affected game’s official file repair process remains the correct source.
13. Consider System Restore only after identifying a recent system change
System Restore is appropriate only when the failure clearly began after a recent driver, security software, system, or configuration change and a suitable restore point exists.
It does not replace a clean Steam installation and may not restore personal game data. Review the affected programs shown by the restore wizard before confirming.
Microsoft documents this process in its System Restore guidance.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Do not download steamclient64.dll from a random DLL archive and place it in a game folder, System32, or SysWOW64.
That approach can fail because:
- The file may contain malware.
- The copy may be from an unrelated Steam build.
- The architecture may be wrong.
- Its dependent libraries may still be missing.
- It may not match the executable or anti-cheat checks.
- The original problem may be antivirus quarantine, disk corruption, or an incomplete update.
- Placing a DLL in a searched directory can create DLL-preloading or version-conflict problems.
The safe sources are:
- The official Steam installer.
- Steam’s official game file verification and reinstallation process.
- The official Steamworks SDK for developers.
- The official dedicated-server redistributables for legitimate server deployments.
- Microsoft’s official packages when the exact error names Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET.
For ordinary players, manually copying the file is not an appropriate repair technique.
Dedicated-server and developer cases
A dedicated server may fail even when the desktop Steam client works correctly. Servers can use a separate Steamworks deployment and may not have a running Steam client available.

If the error appears in a server directory:
- Stop the server.
- Record the server executable version and architecture.
- Remove manually copied or stale Steamworks files from the deployment.
- Obtain the matching official dedicated-server redistributables through the Steamworks developer tools.
- Deploy the package as a complete set.
- Do not mix an older
steamclient64.dllwith newer API libraries or support files. - Start the server and review the complete log.
An entry-point error is especially important here. It means the program found a DLL but requested a function that the loaded build does not provide. Replacing only the named file can make the mismatch worse. Redeploy matching binaries together.
For a normal player, do not use the developer redistributable as a shortcut around Steam’s repair process.
What to do when the file exists but the error remains
Check the full path from the dialog or log. Windows may be loading a different copy from:
- The game directory.
- A mod or injector directory.
- A dedicated-server directory.
- A temporary extraction directory.
- A network share.
- An unofficial game package.
Open the file’s Properties dialog and inspect the Digital Signatures tab when available. A legitimate location and expected Valve signature are useful evidence, but a signature alone does not prove that the file matches the program’s required build.
Then check:
- Whether Steam itself launches.
- Whether every game or only one game fails.
- Whether the failing executable is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Whether antivirus Protection History records a quarantine.
- Whether the problem began after an update, forced shutdown, drive change, or mod installation.
- Whether the error names another missing dependency.
- Whether the file is on an internal drive or network location.
- Whether the file belongs to an official installation.
If only one Windows user experiences the problem, test the game from another Windows account. If it works there, suspect per-user Steam configuration, permissions, security software, or a damaged user profile. That is a diagnostic clue, not proof of a specific steamclient64.dll cause.

Why regsvr32 steamclient64.dll is normally wrong
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. Steam loads steamclient64.dll as a runtime library; it is not normally a self-registering COM component.
Running regsvr32 steamclient64.dll may produce an error saying that DllRegisterServer was not found. That does not mean the Steam DLL needs a different registration command. It means the command is not applicable.
Use the Steam installer, game verification, or the matching official Steamworks package instead. Microsoft describes the registration model in its DllRegisterServer documentation.
FAQ
Is steamclient64.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with the Steam client and Steamworks applications. Windows Update does not normally provide it, and SFC does not normally restore it.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Is steamclient64.dll the same as steam_api64.dll?
No. steam_api64.dll is the application-facing Steamworks API library commonly shipped with a game. steamclient64.dll belongs to the Steam client or a matching Steamworks deployment.
Should I copy it into System32?
No. Do not copy it into C:\Windows\System32, C:\Windows\SysWOW64, or an arbitrary game folder. Repair the installation that supplied it.
Should I install Visual C++?
Only if the error names a Visual C++ runtime such as VCRUNTIME140.dll or MSVCP140.dll, or the game’s official installer identifies that dependency. Visual C++ does not replace steamclient64.dll.
Why does Steam work while one game reports the error?
That usually points toward the game’s files, a mod, anti-cheat, a game-specific Steamworks copy, or a missing dependency. Verify the game first and remove modifications.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why does the error mention “Untrusted system file”?
Anti-cheat may have rejected a changed, stale, relocated, unsigned, or mismatched file. Investigate the exact path and Protection History, then update Steam, remove modifications, verify the game, and repair anti-cheat.
Can I register the DLL with regsvr32?
Normally no. It is a runtime library, not a typical self-registering COM DLL.
Will reinstalling Steam delete my games?
Reinstalling Steam into the existing Steam directory can preserve installed games. Uninstalling Steam first has different consequences and may remove installed game content. Back up steamapps, userdata, and local saves before making changes.
Is a missing steamclient64.dll proof of malware?
No. It can result from an interrupted update, corruption, quarantine, an incomplete installation, a mismatched package, or a modified file. If it appears in an unexpected directory or came from a crack, cheat, injector, or unknown installer, treat the package as untrusted and scan the system.
