vcomp140d.dll is the Microsoft Visual C++ OpenMP debug runtime, not a normal Windows system file. When an application reports that it is missing, the safest first fix is to repair, verify, or reinstall the application that requested it.
The final d is important. vcomp140d.dll is the debug version, while vcomp140.dll is the retail or release version. Repairing the public Visual C++ Redistributable can restore vcomp140.dll, but it normally does not install vcomp140d.dll. Microsoft documents the distinction in its OpenMP Library Reference.

What vcomp140d.dll does
The filename identifies the runtime:
vcomprefers to the Visual C++ OpenMP runtime.140identifies the Visual C++ 14.0 runtime family.dmeans the debug build..dllmeans it is a dynamic-link library.
OpenMP provides parallel-processing support for applications compiled with Microsoft C++. A program that uses OpenMP may call functions inside this runtime while starting or performing intensive work.
The file is associated with Microsoft Visual Studio and MSVC. It is not a DirectX component, .NET file, graphics-driver file, or ordinary Windows-protected system DLL.

Microsoft places the debug OpenMP runtime in Visual Studio’s debug_nonredist area, separate from the normal redistributable files. Debug Visual C++ runtime DLLs are intended for development and testing rather than general end-user deployment. Microsoft explains this restriction in its guide to preparing a test machine for a debug executable.
First, check whether the filename really ends in d
Before changing anything, read the complete error message.

Where vcomp140d.dll should be located
For an ordinary application, the legitimate copy is commonly beside the application executable or in one of its application subdirectories. Windows normally searches the executable’s directory before system directories for an unpackaged desktop application. This behavior is described in Microsoft’s DLL search order documentation.
A developer or tester may find the debug runtime below a Visual Studio installation in a path resembling:
<VisualStudioFolder>\VC\Redist\MSVC\<version>\debug_nonredist\x64\Microsoft.VC<version>.DebugOpenMP\vcomp140d.dll
or:
<VisualStudioFolder>\VC\Redist\MSVC\<version>\debug_nonredist\x86\Microsoft.VC<version>.DebugOpenMP\vcomp140d.dll
The exact folder depends on the Visual Studio release, installed MSVC toolset, and architecture.
Do not expect this file to be in:
C:\Windows\System32
C:\Windows\SysWOW64
Those are not appropriate general-purpose destinations for this application runtime.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the affected application
Time needed: 5 to 20 minutes
This is the most likely fix when only one game or application reports vcomp140d.dll.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe application may have lost its private copy because of an interrupted update, incomplete extraction, failed installation, cleanup software, or antivirus quarantine. A repair operation restores the files from the application’s own package.
Repair from Windows Settings
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the application named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
If Windows does not offer Repair, open the application’s installer and look for Repair, Modify, or Reinstall.
Some applications expose repair controls through Control Panel:
- Open Start.
- Type Control Panel and open it.
- Select Programs.
- Choose Programs and Features.
- Right-click the affected program.
- Select Repair or Change.
- Complete the installer.
Repair a game
For a game installed through Steam:
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the affected game.
- Choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the scan to finish.
- Start the game again.
Verification is especially useful when the game worked previously and stopped after an update or security scan.

If repair does not work
Uninstall the application, restart Windows, then reinstall it from its official installer or the store where you obtained it.
Before uninstalling, check whether the application stores settings or save data outside its installation directory. If the program came from an organization, ask its administrator for the approved installer.
A successful repair should either start the program normally or produce a different, more specific error. If another debug DLL is then named, the application may be a development build with several missing dependencies.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5 to 10 minutes
Security software can remove an application-local DLL after an update or installation. Check quarantine before downloading anything.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the application.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent actions.
- Expand any item associated with the affected application.
- Confirm the file path and application source.
Restore a quarantined file only when all of these are true:
- The application came from a trusted official source.
- The file path belongs to that application.
- The alert clearly identifies the application file.
- You have confirmed that the application has not been modified or obtained from an unofficial package.
If the file is suspicious, do not restore it. Remove the application and reinstall it from the official source instead. Microsoft warns that restoring a genuinely malicious file can expose the device. See Protection History in Windows Security.
After restoring a verified file, update the application and run another security scan. If quarantine immediately removes the file again, contact the application vendor rather than repeatedly restoring it.
Fix 3: Confirm the application architecture
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
A 32-bit process cannot load a 64-bit DLL, and a 64-bit process cannot load a 32-bit DLL. Installing the wrong architecture can leave the file present but unusable.

- A 32-bit application needs x86 runtime files.
- A 64-bit application needs x64 runtime files.
- On 64-bit Windows, you may need both architectures for different applications.
The Windows operating system itself may be 64-bit while the failing application is 32-bit. Do not choose the installer solely by looking at the Windows edition.
To identify an application’s architecture, check its documentation or installer. Some programs show the architecture in About, Help, or System information. A game may have separate x86 and x64 executables in its installation directory.
If an application was installed with the wrong architecture, repair or reinstall the correct build. Do not replace an x86 DLL with an x64 copy or the reverse.

Fix 4: Install or repair the retail Visual C++ Redistributable when the filename is vcomp140.dll
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
This step applies to the release file vcomp140.dll. It does not normally restore the debug file vcomp140d.dll.
Microsoft provides the current v14 packages with these names:
vc_redist.x86.exevc_redist.x64.exevc_redist.arm64.exe
Use Microsoft’s Latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads page to select the package. The official rolling installers are also available here:
For a 32-bit application, install or repair x86. For a 64-bit application, install or repair x64. On 64-bit Windows, installing both x86 and x64 is reasonable when you use applications of both types.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
After downloading the correct installer:
- Right-click the installer.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Accept the license terms.
- Choose Repair, if offered.
- Restart Windows.
- Start the affected application.
You can also run a repair from an elevated Command Prompt:
vc_redist.x64.exe /repair
For a 32-bit package:
vc_redist.x86.exe /repair
The installer also supports /install, /uninstall, /passive, /quiet, /norestart, and /log. Microsoft documents these options in Redistribute Visual C++ files.
If the error still names vcomp140d.dll, stop repeating this repair. The public redistributable is the wrong package for that exact debug filename.
Fix 5: Install the matching Visual Studio C++ tools for a genuine Debug build

Fix 6: Inspect the application folder and dependencies
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes
If the file appears to exist but Windows still cannot load it, the problem may be architecture, a damaged file, an incorrect search path, or another missing dependency.
Check the executable’s folder:
- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Select Open File Location.
- Look for the executable and its nearby runtime files.
- Confirm that the file is actually named
vcomp140d.dll. - Check whether other debug runtime files are present.
Do not infer that the file is usable merely because a search finds it somewhere on the disk. Windows may be searching a different application directory, or the file may be the wrong bitness.
If the error says “specified module could not be found” while the named DLL is present, another dependency may be absent. Repairing the application is safer than manually assembling a collection of debug DLLs.

Fix 7: Do not register this DLL with regsvr32
Time needed: Less than a minute
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide COM self-registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general DLL repair utility.
vcomp140d.dll is a Visual C++ OpenMP runtime library, not a COM server. Running this command is therefore not an appropriate repair:
regsvr32 vcomp140d.dll
It may produce an error such as:
DllRegisterServer in vcomp140d.dll failed
or an entry-point-not-found message.
Do not add the DLL to the registry, and do not repeat the command from both System32 and SysWOW64. Registration does not resolve missing runtime dependencies.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Fix 8: Check Windows Features only when the application specifically requires them
Time needed: 5 minutes
No standard Windows optional feature installs vcomp140d.dll. Do not enable random features in the hope that one contains the file.
To review optional Windows components:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Features.
- Select Turn Windows features on or off.
- Review the enabled components.
- Close the window without changing anything unless the application’s documentation explicitly requires a feature.
Legacy compatibility components may matter to some older applications, but they do not replace the Visual C++ OpenMP debug runtime. If enabling a feature appears to change the error, repair the application afterward and check its own requirements.
Fix 9: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes
Use Windows component repair when several unrelated programs fail, Windows itself behaves abnormally, or the DLL was incorrectly placed in a protected system directory. It is not the first response to one application missing its private copy.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
Run these commands in order:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for DISM to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands complete, then test the application again.
Possible results include:
- No component store corruption detected: Windows may be healthy, so return to application repair.
- The restore operation completed successfully: restart and test again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and repaired them: restart and retest.
- Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation: run the checks again from Safe Mode or Windows recovery troubleshooting.
SFC and DISM normally repair Windows components. They will not usually recreate an application’s private copy of vcomp140d.dll.
If you want a guided scan that identifies damaged or outdated components while you work through this manually, Outbyte PC Repair can show what it finds; its free scan identifies issues, while repair is performed by the full version. When the missing file belongs to one game or application, repairing or reinstalling that program remains the definitive fix.
Microsoft documents the command sequence in Using System File Checker in Windows.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Fix 10: Update drivers only when application logs point to a driver
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes
A graphics or device-driver reinstall is a low-probability fix for vcomp140d.dll. This DLL is not a driver. Investigate drivers only when the application’s own log identifies a driver dependency or the failure began with a specific hardware-driver change.
To check drivers manually:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Review the provider, date, and version.
- Select Update Driver if an update is appropriate.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if the driver changes.
For a graphics driver, use the hardware manufacturer’s official support channel when Windows does not find an appropriate update. Avoid removing a working driver merely because a runtime DLL is missing.
If you want to avoid hunting through multiple hardware entries and driver versions, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver issues; its free scan reports what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version. A driver update is not a substitute for reinstalling the affected application when that application owns the missing DLL.
Fix 11: Use System Restore only after a recent change
Time needed: 20 to 60 minutes
System Restore may help when the error began immediately after an application update, cleanup operation, or installation and a suitable restore point exists. It is not guaranteed to restore an application’s private DLL.
- Open Start.
- Type Create a restore point.
- Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Confirm the restore.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system settings and installed components, but application files may still need to be repaired or reinstalled. Microsoft explains these limitations in Recovery options in Windows.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Do not download an isolated vcomp140d.dll file from a random DLL website.
That approach can provide:
- Malware disguised as a runtime file.
- The wrong architecture.
- A mismatched compiler or toolset build.
- A damaged or modified DLL.
- A file missing its own dependencies.
- A replacement that fails Windows loader checks.
It also leaves the underlying installation problem unresolved. The correct source is the original application installer, the application’s official repair or verification process, or Visual Studio when you are developing or testing the program.
Never:
- Copy the file into
C:\Windows\System32. - Copy it into
C:\Windows\SysWOW64. - Rename
vcomp140.dlltovcomp140d.dll. - Mix x86 and x64 runtime files.
- Copy a debug DLL from an unrelated application.
- Restore a security alert without checking the source and path.
Manual copying is appropriate only when the application publisher supplies the exact file in its own installer or archive and specifically instructs you to restore it to the application directory.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMain causes of vcomp140d.dll errors
The likely cause depends on what changed and whether one application or many applications fail.
| Cause | What it means | Correct response |
|---|---|---|
| Application file deleted or omitted | The program expected an app-local copy | Repair, verify, or reinstall the application |
| Antivirus quarantine | Security software removed the file | Review Protection History and restore only after verification |
| Debug build distributed to users | The software was built for development rather than release | Obtain a corrected Release build from the publisher |
| Wrong architecture | x86 and x64 files do not match the process | Install the matching application build |
| Missing debug dependency | Another file such as vcruntime140d.dll is absent |
Install the matching Visual Studio environment or obtain a Release build |
| Damaged or incompatible DLL | The file exists but cannot load | Restore it from the original package |
| Failed update or installer cache | The installation is incomplete | Run repair or reinstall |
| Windows component corruption | Broader Windows files are damaged | Run DISM, then SFC |
| Driver issue | An application log identifies a separate driver failure | Investigate the named driver only |
This is a qualitative troubleshooting order, not a measured prevalence ranking.
What to do when every normal fix fails
Collect the following details before contacting support:
- The exact error text.
- Whether the filename ends in
d. - The affected application and executable name.
- The full path shown in the message.
- Your Windows version and architecture.
- The application’s architecture.
- Whether the problem began after an update, reinstall, cleanup, or antivirus alert.
- Whether
vcomp140d.dllexists beside the executable. - Whether other debug DLLs are also missing.
- Whether the application came from Steam, Microsoft Store, an OEM, or a standalone installer.
If only one application fails, contact that application’s publisher. The publisher needs to provide a correctly packaged Release build or the exact supported deployment.
Recommended Free Tools
If many unrelated applications fail with several Visual C++ debug DLLs, investigate whether Visual Studio or a development environment was partially removed, then check Windows health with DISM and SFC.
Frequently asked questions
Is vcomp140d.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is a Microsoft Visual C++ OpenMP debug runtime associated with Visual Studio and applications built with MSVC. It is not a normal Windows operating-system component.
Will installing Visual C++ Redistributable fix vcomp140d.dll?
Usually not. The public redistributable primarily supplies the retail runtime, including vcomp140.dll. It normally does not install vcomp140d.dll.
Should I install both x86 and x64 packages?
On 64-bit Windows, installing both retail packages is reasonable when you use both 32-bit and 64-bit applications. It does not replace a missing debug runtime, and the package architecture must still match the application.
Can I rename vcomp140.dll to vcomp140d.dll?
No. The files serve different build configurations and may have different dependencies. Renaming does not convert a Release runtime into a Debug runtime.
Can I fix this with regsvr32?
No. vcomp140d.dll is a runtime library, not a COM self-registering DLL. regsvr32 is not a general missing-DLL repair tool.
Should I run SFC first?
Not when one application is affected. Start with that application’s repair, verification, or reinstall process. Use DISM and SFC when there is evidence of broader Windows corruption.
Is it safe to copy the DLL from another computer?
Only if the application publisher specifically supplies that exact build and directs you to use it. A file from another computer may have the wrong architecture, toolset, dependencies, or security status.
Why does the file exist but Windows still says it is missing?
The process may be the wrong architecture, another dependency may be missing, the file may be damaged, security software may be blocking it, or the application may be searching another directory.
What is the correct fix for an ordinary user?
Identify the application named in the error, then use its Repair, Verify files, or reinstall option. If the application still demands a debug runtime, request a corrected Release build from its publisher.
What is the correct fix for a developer?
Install the matching Visual Studio C++ workload and required MSVC toolset, then build and test the application with the correct architecture. Do not distribute debug runtime files as a general end-user dependency.
