The file appears in public Steam depot records for older SEGA games, including Viking: Battle for Asgard, NiGHTS into Dreams…, and The Typing of the Dead: Overkill. It sits beside each game’s executable and other Steam-related files.

It is not a general Windows DLL, and there is no verified evidence that it is a current universal Steamworks SDK component. Valve’s current API documentation identifies files such as steam_api.dll, steam_api64.dll, and steamclient.dll, but does not identify steammetricssdk.dll as a current general-purpose redistributable.

Fix 1: Verify the affected game in Steam
This is the most likely solution when the file was deleted, corrupted, or missed during an update.
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Find the game that displays the error.
- Right-click the game and select Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to complete the check.
- Start the game again from Steam.
Steam compares the installed files with the game’s depot and replaces missing or damaged files. A successful repair normally ends with the game launching without the DLL message.
Steam may report that some files failed verification because they are local configuration files. That does not necessarily indicate a failed repair. Test the game after verification.

If Steam reports that files were restored but the same error returns, restart Windows and launch the game again. If the file is still absent, continue with the antivirus check below before reinstalling.
Fix 2: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Security software can remove a game DLL after an update, especially when an old game contains a legacy binary. Do not restore the file automatically. First confirm that the game came from a legitimate Steam installation.
Check Windows Security
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent actions involving the game’s installation folder or
steammetricssdk.dll. - Open the detection details and note the file path and reason for the action.

If the detection concerns a modified executable, crack, unofficial patch, or unknown file, do not restore it. Remove the modification and reinstall clean game files instead.
If the file repeatedly disappears after verification, investigate antivirus actions, permissions, disk problems, and unofficial modifications. Repeated deletion is a sign that replacing the file alone will not solve the cause.
Fix 3: Reinstall the affected game

- Select Manage → Uninstall.
- Restart Steam.
- Install the game again from your Library.
- Launch it without mods first.
Test the clean installation before adding modifications. If the original game launches but a mod does not, the mod may expect a different game build or executable. Reinstall the mod according to its documented version requirements.
Reinstalling Steam itself is usually not the right first step. steammetricssdk.dll belongs to the game’s files, so repair or reinstall the affected game first.
Fix 4: Install the game’s legitimate prerequisites

- Choose Repair if the runtime is already installed, or Install if it is absent.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the game again.
The x64 package is for 64-bit applications. Installing x64 does not satisfy a 32-bit game’s x86 dependency. Install x64 as well only when another 64-bit application requires it.
Visual C++ repair is a secondary remedy. It does not recreate a missing steammetricssdk.dll.
Enable legacy DirectPlay when the game requires it
Some older games depend on legacy Windows components.

Enable this only when the game or its prerequisite installer requires it. Do not assume DirectPlay repairs the missing DLL itself.
Fix 5: Confirm that the game is using the right architecture
steammetricssdk.dll is a 32-bit application DLL. A 64-bit replacement is not interchangeable with it.
Use the file supplied by the affected game. Do not copy a similarly named file from another title, another computer, or a different Steam installation. Even two games that contain a file with the same name may require different builds.

System32 and SysWOW64 are Windows-managed locations, not general storage folders for game DLLs. Global placement can create version conflicts between applications.

Fix 6: Repair broader Windows component corruption
Windows repair commands generally do not recreate a game-local steammetricssdk.dll. They are useful when Windows itself is unstable, system files are damaged, or multiple unrelated applications fail.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.

Fix 7: Update drivers only when the wider error points to them
A graphics or chipset driver is not the normal source of a missing steammetricssdk.dll message. Consider driver repair only when the game also crashes with graphics errors, Windows reports device problems, or several games fail after a driver change.

Do not download the DLL from a random website
A loose DLL may be:
- The wrong build
- The wrong architecture
- Modified or malware-infected
- Missing its dependent files
- Intended for a different game
It may also hide the real cause, such as quarantine, a failed update, or a damaged installation. Use Steam’s repair or reinstall process, the original retail installer, the publisher’s support channel, or a legitimate backup.
Do not run regsvr32 as a generic fix
regsvr32 is used for DLLs that expose the COM DllRegisterServer entry point. steammetricssdk.dll is not established as a self-registering COM component.

A registration error does not prove that the file is damaged. Game runtime DLLs are normally loaded by the game from its own directory.

A registry cleaner cannot restore the correct game depot file. It can introduce unrelated configuration problems while leaving the missing DLL untouched.
If the error remains
Record these details before contacting Steam Support or the game publisher:
- The exact error text
- The game title and executable name
- The full installation path
- Whether the unmodified game launches
- Whether Steam verification restored any files
- Any Windows Security detection
- Your Windows version
- Whether the installation is 32-bit or 64-bit
If verification, a clean reinstall, and prerequisite repair all succeed but the error remains, the executable may be incompatible with the installed game build or a remaining mod may be involved. Keep the installation clean while testing.
