Steam reached a reported peak of 42,042,778 concurrent users on January 11, 2026, its first reported crossing of 42 million. That figure counts accounts online at once—not just people playing games—and a later March tally has since surpassed it.
What happened when Steam passed 42 million?
Steam’s peak reached 42,042,778 concurrent users on January 11, 2026, according to SteamDB figures reported by GameSpot on January 13 and PC Gamer on January 12. It was the first reported time the platform’s peak cleared 42 million.
The headline’s “player count” can be misleading: concurrent users means accounts online at the same time, not accounts all actively playing. At the January peak, 13,119,473 accounts were reported as in-game—a smaller subset of the online total, according to PC Gamer.
Online users and in-game players are different measures
Steam users can be connected to the service without playing a game. Valve’s statistics page separates its recent concurrent-user count from the list of games and their current players. The two figures answer different questions: how many accounts are online, and how many are playing games.

Valve says its aim in sharing statistics is to identify service problems earlier, improve Steam efficiently, and build better products and experiences. Its Steam statistics page describes the concurrent figure as covering the “most recent 48 hours.”
January’s peak is not the latest reported all-time high
A later figure changes how the January milestone should be described. Demandsage’s September 29, 2026 statistics roundup lists a March 2026 peak of 42,686,616, attributed to SteamDB. This secondary compilation indicates that January’s peak was subsequently surpassed; it should not be confused with a live reading from Valve’s page.

Valve’s statistics page displayed a 48-hour peak of 38,599,430 when accessed October 8, 2026. That is a rolling recent-window figure, not an all-time record. For a current historical high, check a dated chart rather than treating the latest 48-hour number as a record.
Where the numbers come from
Valve publishes its own recent-window statistics on the Steam statistics page. SteamDB is a third-party tracker, not Valve; it says it updates the current top thousand games every five minutes and the rest every ten minutes. Historical peaks attributed to SteamDB should therefore be identified as tracker figures, rather than presented as direct Valve statements.

What the milestone does—and does not—show
The count shows how many Steam accounts were online together at a particular peak. It does not establish why the number rose: the cited reports do not tie the January milestone to a specific game release, sale, or other cause. Nor does the total mean 42 million people were in active game sessions; the reported in-game count was substantially lower.
