Valve’s July 2026 Steam Hardware & Software Survey shows 16GB graphics-memory configurations narrowly overtaking 8GB GPUs and eight-core processors edging past six-core chips. That is a meaningful change in Steam’s installed base—but it does not mean most gamers now have 16GB graphics cards, or that eight CPU cores and 32GB of system memory have suddenly become minimum requirements.
The headline figures
The July 2026 results, published in early August and reported by Tom’s Hardware, TechRadar and Club386, show two very close category crossovers:

| Category | July 2026 | Previous month | Change | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GPU VRAM: 16GB | 25.9% | 24.5% | +1.4 percentage points | Largest VRAM category |
| GPU VRAM: 8GB | 25.32% | Approx. 25.64% | Approx. −0.32 points | No longer the largest category |
| Physical CPU cores: 8 | 27.85% | Approx. 27.47% | Approx. +0.38 points | Largest core-count category |
| Physical CPU cores: 6 | 27.52% | Approx. 27.64% | Approx. −0.12 points | Narrowly overtaken |
These are largest individual buckets, not majorities. About 25.9% is roughly one in four surveyed systems, meaning roughly three-quarters do not fall into the 16GB GPU category. The same logic applies to eight-core CPUs.
16GB GPUs have narrowly overtaken 8GB cards
The survey measures the hardware in participating Steam users’ systems. It does not measure graphics-card shipments, retail sales or what buyers selected during July.

The rise in 16GB configurations could reflect several overlapping factors:
- Newer midrange graphics cards increasingly have 16GB variants, including products such as the 16GB GeForce RTX 5060 Ti and Radeon RX 9060 XT.
- Older 16GB Radeon and GeForce cards remain in service and continue contributing to the installed base.
- Gaming laptops are a significant part of Steam’s population, and laptop GPUs can be deployed across many complete systems.
- Modern games use larger textures, more detailed worlds and heavier ray-tracing workloads.
- Valve’s detection or categorisation of some AMD Radeon hardware has changed, which may have altered the apparent size of certain categories. TechRadar reported on that earlier reporting change.
- Month-to-month sampling, regional participation and the active-device mix can move percentages even without a matching wave of new purchases.
So the result supports a cautious conclusion: 16GB graphics memory is becoming a more common mainstream configuration on Steam. It does not prove that 16GB cards are selling better everywhere, that 8GB GPUs are obsolete, or that VRAM capacity alone determines gaming performance.
What the change means for 8GB GPU owners
An 8GB graphics card can still be a sensible choice for 1080p gaming, esports, older games and many titles at medium or high settings. If the GPU core itself cannot render a game quickly enough, moving to a slower 16GB card will not automatically solve the problem.

In those cases, extra VRAM can reduce texture compromises and memory-related stutter—but independent benchmarks for the games you actually play matter more than the capacity number alone.
When comparing 8GB and 16GB versions, consider GPU performance, memory bandwidth, price premium, power and cooling, target resolution, and how long you plan to keep the card. On laptops, also check the GPU’s power limit and cooling: a laptop GPU with the same name as a desktop model is not necessarily equally fast.

Eight-core CPUs are now the largest core-count group
Eight-core processors reached approximately 27.85%, narrowly ahead of six-core chips at approximately 27.52%. The crossover is historically notable, but it is not evidence that games now require eight physical cores.
AMD’s gaming-focused X3D processors are relevant because many popular X3D models use eight cores. Intel’s hybrid designs also make simple core-count comparisons less precise: a processor’s listed physical-core total does not always correspond neatly to the number of conventional performance cores or to its gaming speed.

An upgrade is more compelling for high-refresh-rate gaming, simulation and strategy titles, heavily modded games, streaming, development or demanding multitasking. Architecture, IPC, cache, memory support and minimum frame rates are more useful than core count in isolation.
GPU VRAM is not system RAM
These survey labels describe different resources:
- GPU VRAM: memory built into or assigned to the graphics card for textures, frame buffers and other graphics data.
- System RAM: the computer’s main memory used by Windows, games, browsers, launchers and other applications.
- Physical CPU cores: processor cores, which are separate from both types of memory.
A 16GB GPU result does not mean the typical Steam PC has 16GB of system RAM. July coverage also points to growth in larger system-memory configurations, including 24GB and 64GB systems, but the exact July distribution should be taken from Valve’s July table rather than inferred from the VRAM figures.
For practical buying decisions in 2026:
- 16GB system RAM: still workable for many games, but less comfortable when browsers, launchers, streaming tools, mods and other applications are open.
- 32GB: the sensible default for most new gaming PCs.
- 64GB: useful for heavy modding, content creation, virtual machines, development, local AI workloads and unusually demanding multitasking—not a universal gaming requirement.
Dual-channel operation, memory speed and platform compatibility can matter as well. Laptop buyers should confirm whether memory is replaceable, limited to specific slots or soldered before planning an upgrade.

Windows 11 passes 70% in the June context
The clearest verified milestone from the preceding June 2026 survey was Windows 11 at 70.44%, while Windows 10 stood at 23.56%, according to TechTimes. The July operating-system percentages should not be substituted with those June figures.

Windows 10 has not therefore stopped running Steam games immediately, but users who remain on it should understand the security-support limitations. If a PC meets Windows 11’s requirements, an upgrade may be possible; otherwise, replacing unsupported hardware or using a supported Linux distribution may be worth considering where game and anti-cheat compatibility is acceptable. Windows 11’s Steam share also should not be treated as a measurement of every PC user, since Steam’s audience has its own hardware, regional and usage patterns.
The most common individual GPU is a different statistic
In June, the most common individual GPU was reportedly the GeForce RTX 4060 Laptop GPU at 3.81%, narrowly ahead of the desktop RTX 3060 at 3.73%. This is not the same as saying 16GB GPUs were the most common VRAM category.
A laptop model can appear across many OEM systems, and gaming laptops are sold as complete machines rather than as individual graphics-card purchases. The ranking is useful evidence that Steam is not a desktop-only population, but it cannot replace sales data or establish which GPU sold best in a particular country or month.
What to do if you are upgrading
If you already own an 8GB GPU
Keep it if your games meet your target frame rate at your preferred settings. Upgrade because of actual performance, texture limitations, stutter or an upcoming change to resolution—not because a survey category moved into first place.

If you are choosing a new GPU
Prioritise the GPU core and benchmark performance first, then use VRAM as part of the long-term fit. A 16GB model makes more sense for 1440p, demanding textures, ray tracing, modded games and extended ownership, provided its price and performance are competitive.
If you have a six-core CPU
There is no survey-based reason to replace it immediately. Check frame-time consistency and CPU utilisation in your own games. Consider an upgrade for high-refresh-rate play, simulation-heavy titles, streaming or multitasking when the CPU is demonstrably the bottleneck.
If you are building a new gaming PC
Use 32GB of system RAM as a practical default, while matching GPU VRAM to resolution, settings and ownership plans. Do not confuse a 16GB graphics card with 16GB of system memory.
If you use Windows 10
Check official Windows 11 compatibility and support options. Continuing with Windows 10 is not an instant game-compatibility failure, but it carries a post-support security trade-off.

Why Steam’s survey needs careful interpretation
Valve describes the survey as a monthly collection of the hardware and software configurations used by Steam customers. It is an installed-base snapshot, not a census of all gaming PCs.
Results can be affected by voluntary participation or sampling, regional and seasonal variation, whether users run Steam on multiple devices, hardware-detection changes and classification errors. The population is also shaped by gaming habits, laptop ownership, operating-system preferences and the age of users’ machines.
The most important distinction is between plurality and majority. A plurality is simply the largest single category. The July results show that 16GB GPUs and eight-core CPUs have become the largest buckets in their respective measures; they do not establish a universal specification, a hard minimum or a performance threshold.
For the complete monthly tables, consult Valve’s Steam Hardware & Software Survey, while remembering that month-to-month changes may reflect classification and sample changes as well as hardware replacement.
Bottom line
Steam’s July 2026 survey indicates that 16GB GPU configurations and eight-core CPUs are becoming central parts of the platform’s mainstream installed base. The shifts are narrow and gradual, not proof that 8GB graphics cards or six-core processors are suddenly unusable. For a new gaming PC, 32GB of system RAM and enough GPU VRAM for the intended resolution are sensible targets; existing hardware should be judged by the games, settings and frame rates it actually delivers.
