If SteamVR says “Bluetooth not available”, your computer’s ordinary Bluetooth is not necessarily broken—and the warning does not automatically mean that your base stations have failed. In a VIVE/SteamVR setup, this status usually concerns the specialized wireless communication path used to manage compatible base stations: power management, standby, configuration, and firmware updates.
Tracking may continue to work if the base stations are powered, correctly configured, and have a clear view of the play area. Work through the hardware and SteamVR steps below before buying a Bluetooth dongle or replacement base station.
What SteamVR Bluetooth is used for
Base stations primarily provide tracking by emitting lighthouse signals. The Bluetooth-related SteamVR feature is a separate management channel. Depending on the headset, base-station generation, and link box, it can be used to control base-station power states, configure stations, and perform firmware operations.

That separation explains why some people see the warning while their headset and controllers still track normally. A missing Bluetooth management path can prevent wireless configuration or updating without immediately stopping already powered and configured stations from tracking.
It also explains why a generic Bluetooth USB adapter is not the official universal solution. In compatible VIVE setups, the relevant communication path is associated with the headset or VIVE link box rather than simply whatever Bluetooth radio Windows happens to list.
First, identify your SteamVR hardware path
Before changing drivers, write down three things:
- Headset: for example, the original HTC VIVE, VIVE Pro, VIVE Pro Eye, VIVE Cosmos family, VIVE Pro 2, or Valve Index.
- Base-station generation: first-generation-style stations and SteamVR 2.0 stations do not use identical setup instructions.
- Link box: determine whether you have the original wired VIVE link box and whether its model matches the headset.
“SteamVR-compatible” is not one universal hardware standard. For example, Valve’s SteamVR 2.0 base-station documentation lists compatible headset families such as Valve Index and HTC VIVE Pro, while noting that the original standard HTC VIVE is not compatible with that particular base-station product. Do not infer compatibility solely from the SteamVR branding.
For VIVE users, HTC identifies the original wired link box as the hardware required for wireless base-station configuration and firmware operations. A missing, disconnected, or incorrect link box can therefore produce a Bluetooth-related warning even when Windows Bluetooth works normally.

Fix SteamVR Bluetooth Not Available: the official sequence
1. Disable Bluetooth communication, then power-cycle the hardware
- Close any VR application and open SteamVR.
- Open the SteamVR menu and go to Settings. Find the Bluetooth section; wording and location can vary between SteamVR releases.
- Disable Bluetooth communication.
- Power off or unplug both base stations.
- Fully remove power from the link box. If it has a separate power cable, unplug that cable rather than merely closing SteamVR.
- Wait briefly, reconnect the link box and base stations, and allow the hardware to start.
- Return to SteamVR’s Bluetooth settings and enable Bluetooth communication again.
This disable–power-cycle–re-enable procedure is Steam Support’s first recommended recovery path. It resets the communication state without changing base-station channels or room layout.

2. Reinstall SteamVR’s bundled VIVE Bluetooth driver
If the warning remains, Steam Support provides a driver installer inside the SteamVR installation. On a standard Windows installation, the executable is:
Steam/steamapps/common/SteamVR/tools/lighthouse/bin/win64/vivebtdriver.exe
Do not assume Steam is installed on the C: drive. Locate the current Steam library containing SteamVR, then open:
steamapps/common/SteamVR/tools/lighthouse/bin/win64
Run vivebtdriver.exe, let the installation finish, and repeat the complete power-cycle procedure above. Then relaunch SteamVR and enable Bluetooth communication again.
If the folder or executable is missing, first verify the SteamVR installation rather than downloading a driver from an unrelated website.
3. Verify SteamVR’s files and test without third-party interference
Steam’s broader SteamVR troubleshooting guidance recommends these software checks:

- Security Certified: Certified by CE, FCC and RoHS for safety. Every battery has passed factory testing, built-in circuit protection ensures both safety and stability. More than 500 recharge cycles over the life of the battery.
- Restart SteamVR and then restart Windows.
- Verify the integrity of SteamVR’s tool files through Steam’s installed-game properties.
- Check whether your graphics driver is current and appropriate for the headset.
- Use SteamVR Safe Mode if the Bluetooth warning appears with crashes, startup failures, or unresponsive SteamVR behavior.
- Rerun Room Setup only when the room geometry or tracking setup actually requires it.
Safe Mode is useful for identifying conflicts from third-party SteamVR drivers, overlays, or utilities. It does not compensate for an absent link box, an incompatible headset/base-station combination, or disconnected hardware.
Avoid treating community suggestions to disable antivirus, Windows security protections, or memory-integrity features as universal fixes. Those workarounds are environment-specific and can reduce system security. Confirm the hardware path and use the official driver procedure first.
Check the link box before buying anything
If you use an original wired VIVE link box, connect its PC-side USB and power connections. HTC’s restart procedure is:
- Close all Steam applications.
- Disconnect the link box’s PC-side USB and power cables.
- Wait briefly.
- Reconnect the cables.
- Allow Windows to install or re-detect the drivers.
- Start Steam and SteamVR again.
Do not assume that every VIVE link box works with every VIVE headset. HTC’s U.S. listing for its VIVE Pro link box identifies compatibility with VIVE Pro, VIVE Pro Eye, and the VIVE Cosmos Series, but not VIVE Pro 2. Check the exact model before ordering a replacement.
If you own a compatible VIVE setup but the original box is missing or defective, an HTC VIVE Link Box may be the relevant replacement. It is not required merely because Windows lacks ordinary Bluetooth, and it is not a prerequisite for every form of lighthouse tracking.

If Bluetooth is unavailable, update a base station over USB
Bluetooth is not the only documented route for base-station firmware updates. HTC’s VIVE Pro instructions describe a wired method using a micro-USB data connection:
- Shut down or disconnect the base stations as instructed by the headset documentation.
- Connect one base station to the computer with a suitable micro-USB data cable.
- Hold the station’s Channel button while reconnecting its power.
- Wait for SteamVR to detect the station and present the firmware-update process.
- Do not disconnect the micro-USB cable or power cable until the update is completely finished.
- Disconnect the first station and update the other one separately if required.
The cable must support data, not charging only. This is a narrow firmware-update alternative: it does not restore SteamVR’s wireless Bluetooth management path and should not be confused with a Bluetooth adapter.
If tracking works, focus on tracking—not the Bluetooth warning
When the stations show green status lights and the headset tracks, the Bluetooth message may be limited to management functions. Check the following separately:
- Power: each station should be connected to wall power and fully started.
- Placement: with a two-station setup, mount the stations diagonally across the play area and aim them toward the space.
- Line of sight: keep an unobstructed view between the stations and the tracked area where possible.
- Channels: the first-generation optical-synchronization setup commonly uses channel b for one station and c for the other.
- Stability: do not move or change the angle of a station after setup unless you are prepared to redo room setup and resolve tracking changes.
Do not apply the “b/c” instruction indiscriminately to SteamVR 2.0 stations. Channel controls and synchronization behavior depend on the base-station generation. Consult the instructions for the exact model.
What the warning does not prove
- It does not prove that your PC’s Bluetooth is broken. SteamVR’s base-station management radio is a separate issue from pairing ordinary Windows Bluetooth devices.
- It does not mean the headset cannot track. Correctly powered and configured base stations may continue providing lighthouse tracking.
- It does not mean you must pair base stations like controllers. Base-station tracking, SteamVR management, and controller or accessory pairing are separate concepts.
- It does not prove a base station is defective. The cause may be a missing link box, wrong link-box model, disconnected USB or power, a missing bundled driver, or unsupported hardware.
- It does not make a new headset the sensible first repair. Confirm compatibility and complete the software, link-box, power, and wired-firmware checks first.

| What you need | Potentially relevant item | What it will not do |
|---|---|---|
| Wireless base-station management or firmware operations on a compatible VIVE setup | A model-compatible HTC VIVE Link Box | It will not make an incompatible headset and base-station generation compatible. |
| A documented wired firmware update | A suitable micro-USB data cable for VIVE base station firmware updates | It will not restore Bluetooth or act as a generic Bluetooth adapter. |
| Ordinary Windows Bluetooth for unrelated devices | A Bluetooth adapter chosen for that separate Windows use case | It should not be assumed to fix SteamVR base-station management. |
Do not buy a generic Bluetooth USB dongle as the default answer to this SteamVR message. Do not replace a base station until you have ruled out the link box, driver, power, compatibility, and firmware paths.
When to contact support
Escalate to VIVE support or Steam Support if the bundled driver installation, complete power cycle, link-box inspection, and compatible wired firmware procedure do not resolve the problem. Include the headset model, base-station generation, link-box model, SteamVR version, Windows version, whether tracking works, and the exact point at which the warning appears.
If tracking is also failing, report the station status lights, placement, channels where applicable, and whether either station is detected by SteamVR. That information distinguishes a Bluetooth management problem from a power, synchronization, compatibility, or tracking problem.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can SteamVR track without Bluetooth?
Usually, no. SteamVR’s Bluetooth feature is primarily used for compatible base-station management, including power control, configuration, and firmware operations. Powered and correctly configured base stations may continue tracking even when this warning appears.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Will a generic Bluetooth USB adapter fix SteamVR Bluetooth Not Available?
Not as a general fix. In compatible VIVE setups, the relevant communication path is associated with the VIVE link box or supported headset. SteamVR’s documented procedure uses its bundled VIVE Bluetooth driver and a link-box hardware path, not an arbitrary Windows Bluetooth dongle.
Where is the SteamVR Bluetooth driver installer?
Use SteamVR’s bundled installer at steamapps/common/SteamVR/tools/lighthouse/bin/win64/vivebtdriver.exe. Run it from the Steam library containing your current SteamVR installation, then power-cycle the base stations and link box before re-enabling Bluetooth communication.
Can I update a VIVE base station without Bluetooth?
Yes, for the documented firmware-update scenario. HTC’s VIVE Pro instructions describe connecting one station at a time with a micro-USB data cable and using the Channel-button power-connection procedure. Do not disconnect power or USB until the update completes.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: SteamVR’s “Bluetooth not available” warning usually concerns base-station management, not ordinary PC Bluetooth. Start with SteamVR’s disable–power-cycle–re-enable sequence, reinstall vivebtdriver.exe, and verify the correct wired link box. If the goal is firmware updating, use HTC’s documented micro-USB method. If tracking already works, check power, placement, line of sight, and generation-specific channels before buying hardware.
