What is Steel Assault?
Developed by Zenovia Interactive and published by Tribute Games, Steel Assault launched on September 28, 2021. It is a single-player side-scroller with hand-crafted stages, detailed pixel art and synthesized music. The publisher describes it as a fast action platformer; that is the intended style, rather than a claim about measured performance. Tribute Games’ factsheet lists the game for PC, Mac, Linux, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and 5, and Xbox One and Series X|S.

A resistance mission in post-apocalyptic America
The game’s official site places the story in an America devastated by radiological warfare. Taro Takahashi, a resistance soldier whose parents were killed in the regime’s purges, is sent to investigate occupied cities as General Magnus Pierce restores old military and robotic technology. The site’s timeline reaches early 2046; this is fictional setting lore, not a historical account. Read the official Steel Assault site.
How do the whip and zipline shape play?
Taro’s whip handles combat, while the zipline extends classic grappling-hook movement into a central traversal tool. Tribute Games calls it “A new twist on classic grappling-hook mechanics, opening up fun movement possibilities.” That is the publisher’s description of its design, not an independent assessment. In practical terms, the premise is that movement and attacks work together: the zipline helps Taro cross a stage, and the whip gives him a way to fight along the route.

The game is divided into side-scrolling stages rather than presented as an open-ended world. Its appeal therefore rests on how much you enjoy learning the pace and demands of an arcade-style action run. If you want a slower, exploratory platformer, this setup may not be what you are looking for.
How difficult is Steel Assault?
Difficulty is an intentional part of the design, but the available options are not all equivalent. In a November 24, 2021 update, Creative Director Sri Kankanahalli explained: “It’s important to understand that Steel Assault’s original game was designed around Hard Mode.” The team said it adjusted Normal difficulty after launch; Hard and Arcade were unchanged. - Hard: The mode the team identified as the original design center.
- Arcade: A separate one-credit-clear challenge, intended for players seeking a stricter arcade-style run.
Choose based on the kind of challenge you want, not on an assumption that the modes are merely small difficulty increments. If you are unsure, Normal is the sensible starting point; players specifically looking for the original demanding balance can choose Hard.

The publisher lists versions for PC, Mac and Linux, Nintendo Switch, PS4 and PS5, and Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. Platform-specific store details differ, so the best fit depends on where you play and which features matter to you.

The publisher’s factsheet gives $14.99 as a regular USD price, but that is not a current quote. Store prices, discounts and availability can vary by region and date. The available platform information does not establish a reliable frame-rate or image-quality comparison, so there is no evidence-based basis here to recommend one version for technical performance.
What do players think of it?
Storefront ratings offer one snapshot of player response, not a universal verdict or a critic consensus. Steam showed 77% positive from 385 user reviews in a 2026 snapshot; that share and review count can change. The PlayStation Store showed 4.27 out of 5 from 146 ratings in a 2026 snapshot. These are different platforms and rating systems, so the figures should not be compared as if they measured the same thing.

Is there a physical Nintendo Switch edition?
A community post reports a physical Switch edition from Limited Run Games, but current inventory and price are not established. The official Nintendo page is a digital listing. If you are looking for a cartridge, confirm that a seller’s current listing matches Steel Assault for Switch before buying; availability should not be assumed from the past report.
Is the soundtrack included?
Steam lists a free complete soundtrack. Zenovia Interactive and Tribute Games said in 2021 that it contains 18 tracks plus an FM-synthesized remix album. It is supplementary digital content, not evidence of a paid physical soundtrack release.
