PS5 has sold substantially more consoles than Xbox Series X|S worldwide, but no single factor explains the gap. The clearest matched estimate in the available figures puts PS5 ahead by 55.27 million units in December 2025. Sony’s larger, highly engaged PlayStation ecosystem helps explain its position; Xbox leadership has also acknowledged challenges around strategy, investment, game releases and hardware costs. Those factors provide context, not a measured breakdown of what caused the sales difference.
How large is PS5’s lead over Xbox?
VGChartz estimated that by December 2025, Sony had sold 89.44 million PS5 consoles worldwide, compared with 34.17 million Xbox Series X|S consoles—a difference of 55.27 million. These are third-party estimates, not sales figures published by Sony or Microsoft. VGChartz’s December 2025 comparison is the clearest same-period worldwide comparison available here.
Sony later reported that PS5 lifetime sales reached 95.3 million by June 30, 2026, as reported by GameSpot. That newer PS5 figure should not be set against the December 2025 Xbox estimate as though both were measured on the same date or using the same method. Microsoft does not publish a comparable Series X|S lifetime unit total in the material available here, so a current, matched worldwide gap cannot be stated.
Why does PlayStation’s ecosystem matter?
Sony’s sales lead sits alongside evidence of strong activity across its platform. Sony reported 125 million PlayStation monthly active users in March 2026, a record for a fourth quarter. The company defines this measure as its estimate of unique accounts that played or used PlayStation services online during the last month of the quarter. Sony also reported that total play time in Q4 FY2025 rose 1% year over year. These figures point to a large, active ecosystem, though they do not establish that engagement alone caused higher console sales. GameSpot’s report on Sony’s results covers the figures.

Console sales are only part of Sony’s gaming business
For FY2025, Sony said Game & Network Services sales were essentially flat year over year. Network-service sales and non-first-party game software increased, while hardware sales declined as unit sales fell. The segment recorded 463.3 billion yen in operating income, up 48.4 billion yen year over year; Sony said foreign exchange and Bungie-related impairments affected the result. The segment’s financial performance is broader than console volume, and it should not be treated as a direct measure of PS5 sales momentum.
What has Xbox said is holding it back?
In a June 10, 2026 message to employees published on Xbox Wire, Asha Sharma and Matt described a company pursuing multiple strategies across subscriptions, streaming and devices. They also said some franchises had not received adequate investment, hardware component costs had risen sharply, and Xbox could not make as many consoles as players wanted to buy at that time.

The message emphasized the importance of games, saying: “At the same time, as we saw this past weekend at Showcase, a reliable pipeline of first- and third-party exclusives and new IP are critical to our success.” That is Xbox leadership’s own assessment of what the business needs; it is not an independent measurement of how much the game lineup has affected hardware sales. The authors also wrote, “We won’t succeed by hiding hard truths, nor will we succeed by doing the same thing and expecting different results.”
Together, those remarks point to several plausible pressures: strategic complexity, uneven investment in some franchises, the need for a dependable stream of games, and increased hardware costs. They do not quantify each factor’s contribution to the long-term sales gap. Xbox content and services revenue also covers more than console games—including Game Pass, cloud gaming, advertising and other services—so revenue alone cannot be used to infer Series X|S unit sales.

Can Xbox still have stronger sales periods?
Yes. Circana data reported by GameSpot showed Xbox Series X|S US unit sales up 86% year over year in June 2026, while PS5 US unit sales were down 43%. The comparison is against June 2025, a difficult period for Xbox after a price increase.
This is a one-month result in the United States, not a reversal of the worldwide lifetime comparison. It is a useful reminder that short-term sales can shift with timing and comparison periods, and that Xbox still has months in which its hardware sales improve sharply.

Does “doing better” mean PS5 is better for every player?
No. The sales figures answer which console has sold more, not which platform is best for every buyer. Hardware volume, business revenue, player engagement, subscription value, game quality and personal fit are different measures. The figures here establish PS5’s sales lead and document activity and strategy statements from both companies, but they do not identify a universal winner for players.
