Steelrising is worth considering if you want a Soulslike action RPG with an unusual French Revolution setting, a story-led adventure, and room to shape your combat build. Reviews are mixed-to-positive overall: critics often praise the atmosphere and combat identity, while recurring complaints include uneven technical polish, enemy variety, level design, and challenge. Whether it suits you depends on which of those trade-offs matter most.
What is Steelrising?
Developed by Spiders and published by Nacon, Steelrising is an action RPG set in an alternate-history Paris during the French Revolution. You play Aegis, a mechanical creation facing Louis XVI’s automaton army. Its cast and setting draw on historical figures including Marie-Antoinette, Lafayette, and Robespierre, while its enemies and story take a distinctly mechanical turn.

The game combines Soulslike combat and exploration with weapons, skills, and build choices. Official storefront descriptions also highlight traversing streets and rooftops, using grapples and carriages, and finding secret passages. It launched on September 8, 2022; inspected storefront listings include PS5 and Windows PC.
What do Steelrising reviews say?
Review snapshots available on October 8, 2026, point to a divided but not broadly hostile critical response. Metacritic’s PC critic page showed a 68 Metascore, labeled “Mixed or Average,” with 4 positive, 15 mixed, and 0 negative reviews among 21 displayed. Epic Games Store showed an OpenCritic top critic average of 71, labeled “Fair,” and 45% Critics Recommend. These are different platform snapshots, not interchangeable scores or permanent ratings.

Critics’ most consistent praise centers on the game’s setting and its combat and build options. The French Revolution backdrop gives the automaton premise a recognizable historical frame, and reviewers have highlighted the atmosphere and distinctive worldbuilding. Flexible builds add another point of interest for players who like adjusting how they fight.
The recurring reservations are about execution. Reviews mention encounters that can feel repetitive, frustrating platforming or level design, side quests that involve backtracking, and technical or graphical roughness. Some critics also found the challenge forgiving or uneven, particularly later in the adventure. These are reported critical impressions, not guarantees that every player will have the same experience.

- You want a Soulslike built around an uncommon historical-fantasy setting rather than a familiar medieval world.
- You value atmosphere, story, and exploration alongside combat.
- You enjoy experimenting with weapons, skills, and character builds.
Consider another game if…
- You prioritize consistently varied enemies and carefully tuned encounters.
- You are especially sensitive to technical roughness or frustrating traversal.
- You want the consistently demanding balance you associate with the genre’s most challenging examples.
In short, the strongest reason to choose Steelrising is its setting paired with adaptable combat; the main hesitation is that reviews describe uneven polish and design. That trade-off makes it easier to recommend to players drawn to its premise than to anyone looking only for the most refined or punishing Soulslike.
Which Steelrising edition should you buy?
The inspected PlayStation listing offers Standard and Bastille editions. The Standard Edition is listed as the base game; Bastille adds the Cagliostro’s Secrets extension and Discus Chain DLC. Choose based on whether those additions are worth the current price difference in your region, rather than assuming the bundle is the better value.

How should you read player-review scores?
Steam’s indexed listing showed 73% positive English-language reviews from 1,796 reviews, alongside 66% positive recent reviews from 92 reviews in the preceding 30 days at the time of the captured snapshot. Those proportions change as users post reviews, and they describe Steam feedback—not every platform or the critical consensus. Use the current Steam page as a separate signal, not as a substitute for critic reviews or a guarantee of your own experience.
