Read the move first: use a precisely timed Perfect Block against attacks you can block, dodge or Blink through Fatal Attacks, then punish the opening without staying in too long. Repeated Perfect Blocks can also stagger the enemy, giving you a chance to use Retribution.
Why you keep getting staggered—and what to change
Boss attacks do not all call for the same defense. PlayStation’s Stellar Blade combat guide advises learning each enemy’s pattern and choosing between blocking, parrying, and dodging. If you default to blocking, you may be using the wrong response for a particular attack—especially a Fatal Attack, which cannot be blocked.

Watch the boss’s animation before committing. Identify whether the incoming move can be blocked, whether its timing gives you a chance to Perfect Block, or whether you need to evade. Staying close enough to counter can help you make use of openings, but do not assume that close range is safe against every move.
Choose your defense based on the attack

Perfect Block and Retribution
Perfect Blocks nullify incoming damage, and repeated deflections can knock an enemy off balance until it enters a staggered state. When that happens, hold Triangle to activate Retribution. Focus on the timing of attacks you can block rather than trying to force a Perfect Block against every move.

Fatal Attacks and Blink
Fatal Attacks cannot be blocked. PlayStation’s guide says to dodge away or attempt Blink: lean the left stick toward the enemy and press Circle just before the attack lands. Blink is a timing-based alternative, not a reason to block the attack.
Dodging without giving up the opening
PlayStation recommends dodging around an enemy rather than retreating by default, so Eve can stay close enough to punish an opening. After evading, take the counter opportunity without extending a combo so far that the boss can retaliate. If a particular move makes staying close unsafe, prioritize avoiding it over maintaining position.

A safer loop for learning a boss
- Observe a move. Watch the attack animation and note whether it is blockable or a Fatal Attack.
- Match the defense. Practice a timed Perfect Block against blockable moves; dodge or attempt Blink against Fatal Attacks.
- Take a measured counter. Punish the opening after a successful defense, but stop attacking before the boss can punish your recovery.
- Build toward stagger. Land repeated Perfect Blocks where the pattern allows, then hold Triangle when the enemy enters the staggered state.
- Use Beta Skills with a purpose. They consume Beta energy and have different effects, such as an unblockable thrust or a wide slash. Treat them as tactical options alongside combos and defense, not guaranteed interruptions or a universal boss-fight rotation.
Practice patterns in Boss Challenge
PlayStation announced Boss Challenge mode as a way to fight bosses, with presets that change skill and stat levels. The announcement also says bosses can be fought on Hard after the ending. See the PlayStation.Blog Boss Challenge announcement for the mode details. It can provide a place to practice, but the general combat guide does not provide move-by-move instructions for a particular boss.
