Its headline additions span individualistic machines, machine ascension paths, cybernetic and synthetic society changes, new megastructures, and crisis content. The feature mix is substantial, but the purchase makes most sense if those themes are central to the kind of Stellaris campaign you want to play.
What is The Machine Age?
The Machine Age is downloadable content for Stellaris, not a standalone game. Steam states: “This content requires the base game Stellaris on Steam in order to play.” Steam lists Paradox Development Studio as developer and Paradox Interactive as publisher. The expansion launched for PC on May 7, 2024, alongside the free 3.12 “Andromeda” update. Those were separate releases: the expansion’s paid additions should not be confused with changes in the free patch.

Paradox’s launch release listed prices of €24.99, $24.99, and £16.45. Those are historical launch prices, not current quotes; the live price depends on storefront, region, and any promotion. Paradox currently lists Steam, Microsoft, GOG, Xbox Series X, and PlayStation 5 among the platforms for the add-on. Check the relevant storefront for the edition available in your region and its compatibility with your copy of the base game.
What does the expansion add?
New empire fantasies and origins
The expansion’s clearest identity is its focus on machine societies. It adds individualistic machine empires, giving players a machine-led option beyond the familiar Gestalt approach. Three origins provide distinct starting premises: Cybernetic Creed, Synthetic Fertility, and Arc Welders. Other additions include six civics, new population traits, reactive portraits, new situations, and an advanced authority swap.

More ways to transform an empire
Machine ascension receives three paths, while the wider expansion also develops cybernetic and synthetic ascension themes. These systems are aimed at campaigns where changing the nature of a society is part of the long-term plan, rather than a small early-game customization choice. Some machine and ascension content is also unlocked through other expansions, including Synthetic Dawn or Utopia; not every related feature is exclusive to The Machine Age. Paradox also notes that some civics require MegaCorp or Utopia, so check the individual content requirements if you are buying for a particular build.
New infrastructure and crisis content
Two mid-game structures broaden the empire-building side of the expansion: the Arc Furnace and Dyson Swarm. The DLC also adds a player crisis path and an end-game crisis featuring Cetana, the Synthetic Queen. Together, these additions give the machine focus more than one expression: it can shape the empire you develop, the infrastructure you build, and the threats that emerge later in a campaign.

Paradox’s feature list also includes seven new music tracks. That is a useful atmospheric addition, though it is secondary to the expansion’s mechanical appeal.
Is The Machine Age worth buying?
The strongest reason to buy The Machine Age is a specific interest in machine-focused campaigns and the systems around them. Individualistic machines, new origins, ascension choices, and the Arc Furnace and Dyson Swarm all support that focus. The player crisis path and Cetana add stakes for players who want the expansion’s themes to reach into the later stages of a campaign.

It is a less obvious choice if you are looking mainly for a broad set of unrelated empire options. The content is organized around machines, cybernetics, synthetic transformation, and crisis play; its value depends more on whether those systems appeal to you than on a universal ranking against other Stellaris expansions. If you already own other DLC, check which machine, ascension, and civic features they unlock before purchasing, because some content overlaps or has separate prerequisites.

Steam’s store page showed 75% positive from 859 all-time user reviews when accessed on October 8, 2026, with the label “Mostly Positive.” Its recent-review snapshot was 38% positive from 18 reviews in the last 30 days, labeled “Mostly Negative.” These are changing storefront figures, and the recent sample is small; neither number is a critic score or an independent assessment of the expansion’s mechanics.

Verdict
The Machine Age is a focused expansion rather than an all-purpose upgrade: it brings together machine empire options, ascension and society changes, distinctive infrastructure, and crisis content. For players eager to build machine-led societies or explore synthetic transformation, that combination gives the DLC a clear purpose. For everyone else, the decision turns on whether those particular systems belong in the next campaign—and whether another owned expansion already supplies part of what they want.
