Still Wakes the Deep is a first-person narrative horror game set on an oil rig off Scotland during a 1975 disaster. Its tense escape-and-evasion gameplay and detailed Unreal Engine 5 presentation make a strong case for the setting, but “well optimised” needs qualification: a June 2024 PC benchmark found high GPU demand at Epic settings and stutters while moving through the world. Those results are tied to one test setup, not a guarantee of how the game performs on every PC.
What kind of horror game is Still Wakes the Deep?
Developed by The Chinese Room and published by Secret Mode, Still Wakes the Deep is a first-person survival horror story aboard the fictional Beira D oil rig in the North Sea. The player is an oil-rig worker caught in a disaster and an otherworldly threat, with communications and exits lost.
This is not a weapon-focused action game. Steam says the player has no weapons or powers; Epic Games Store describes a survival loop built around avoiding danger, distracting threats, sneaking, running, climbing and swimming. The tension comes from navigating the rig and staying alive, rather than defeating enemies in combat. Steam’s game listing and Epic’s listing describe that premise and gameplay.
Is Still Wakes the Deep well optimised on PC?
There is no sound basis here for a blanket verdict that the PC version is well optimised across hardware. A published test found the game GPU-bound at high settings, along with traversal stutters. The practical verdict depends on your graphics card, resolution and quality settings: the test also found that lowering settings could substantially improve performance.

DSOGaming’s benchmark, published June 17, 2024, used a Ryzen 9 7950X3D, 32 GB of DDR5-6000 memory, Windows 10 64-bit, GeForce 555.99 and Radeon Adrenalin 24.5.1 drivers, and several AMD and Nvidia GPUs. Because the game has no built-in benchmark, the outlet tested a custom scene. Its findings are useful evidence about that setup and scene, not a comprehensive measurement of every level or a current guarantee for other systems. Read DSOGaming’s test and methodology.
What the June 2024 Epic-setting results indicate
- At 1080p with Epic settings, DSOGaming reported that RTX 3080- or RX 6900 XT-class hardware was needed for a constant 70 fps in its test.
- At 1440p/Epic, only the tested RX 7900 XTX and RTX 4090 remained above 60 fps at all times.
- At native 4K/Epic, none of the GPUs tested sustained 60 fps.
- The outlet described the game as GPU-bound and observed traversal stutters. Even its RTX 4090 was heavily loaded at 1080p/Epic.
These are the outlet’s results from 2024, not minimum specifications, present-day guarantees or a promise of the same frame rate on another PC. Its test also noted first-launch shader pre-compilation but still encountered traversal stutters. It reported issues in that test with FSR frame generation and DLSS Super Resolution settings; that launch-period observation does not establish current behavior.

What the Unreal Engine 5 technology does—and does not—tell you
In an Unreal Engine spotlight, The Chinese Room Studio Technical Director Nick Slaven describes the team’s move from Unreal Engine 4.26 to UE5. He says the studio used Nanite and Lumen, Unreal’s water technology alongside an internal water simulation, MetaHuman for rig workers, and Control Rig for transformed crew. Lumen let artists see lighting changes without waiting for shadow maps to bake.
That developer account explains the production tools and visual pipeline; it is not a performance benchmark. UE5 features may help explain the game’s presentation, but their use alone does not show whether the game will run smoothly on a particular PC.

Still Wakes the Deep PC system requirements
Steam publishes the following requirements for Windows PC. Treat them as the storefront’s stated minimum and recommended configurations, not independently validated performance thresholds. In particular, they do not promise a specific frame rate at a given resolution or quality level.
| Specification | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 64-bit | Not stated in Steam’s recommended specifications |
| Processor | Quad-core Intel or AMD CPU at 2.5 GHz or faster | Intel Core i5-11600 or AMD Ryzen 5 5600X |
| Memory | 8 GB RAM | 16 GB RAM |
| Graphics | NVIDIA RTX 2050, AMD RX 6000 or Intel Arc A550 | NVIDIA RTX 2070, AMD RX 6700 XT or Intel Arc A750 |
| DirectX | Version 12 | Not stated in Steam’s recommended specifications |
| Storage | 9 GB available space | SSD recommended; a different capacity is not stated |
Before buying, compare your PC with Steam’s full system requirements. The 2024 benchmark suggests that meeting a storefront specification should not be confused with expecting Epic-setting performance at a particular resolution.

Is Siren’s Rest included with the PC game?
Steam lists Siren’s Rest and the soundtrack as add-on content. PC Gamer reported on June 13, 2025, that Siren’s Rest takes place ten years after the base game and was due for release on June 18, 2025. The fact that the add-on is listed does not establish that it is included with every edition or in every region; check the contents of the specific storefront edition before purchasing. Steam’s listing shows the available add-on content, and PC Gamer’s June 2025 report gives the expansion context.
